CLASSIFICATION OF PUMPS
❖There exist a wide variety of pumps. However, most of them can
be broadly classified into two categories as mentioned below-
i. positive displacement pumps
ii. dynamic pressure pumps
Pumps may be broadly classified-
I . Positive Displacement Pumps
These pumps move a fixed volume of fluid with each cycle.

A. Reciprocating Pumps: A reciprocating

pump is a positive displacement pump, which
means it moves a trapped, fixed volume of
fluid using a linear, back-and-forth motion
(usually via a piston or plunger).
1. Piston Pump :
A piston pump is a type of reciprocating pump
where a piston moves back and forth inside a
cylinder to draw in and discharge liquid.
2. Diaphragm Pump :
A diaphragm pump is a type of positive
displacement reciprocating pump that uses a
flexible diaphragm (rubber, plastic, or Teflon Reciprocating pump
membrane) to move liquid.
ii. Dynamic pressure pump:
Dynamic pressure pumps (also known as kinetic or velocity pumps) operate by continuously
transferring mechanical energy to a fluid, increasing its velocity into kinetic energy

Fluid enters the center of a rotating impeller A propeller pump, also known as an axial-
and is accelerated outward via centrifugal flow pump, is a high-flow, low-lift device that
force. The liquid's velocity is then slowed and pushes fluid linearly (parallel to the shaft)
