Exploring Interstellar:
A Reaction Paper on its Relation to the Theory of Relativity
1. Summarize the plot of the movie, highlighting key events and
characters.
"Interstellar" is a science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan that follows the
story of a group of astronauts on a mission to save humanity.
In Earth's future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering
the planet uninhabitable. Professor Brand, a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans
to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole. But
first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper The protagonist of this movie and He is
accompanied on the Endurance, the spaceship he captains, by a biologist, Dr. Brand,
a geographer, Doyle, and a physicist named Dr. Romilly. The crew is sent out into space
by Professor Brand, who is Dr. Brand's father. He sends this new crew through the
wormhole and across the galaxy finish the job of the first scientists Miller, Edmunds, and
Dr. Mann, who turns out to be the antagonist in the movie and to find out which of the
three planets could be mankind’s new home.
2. Identify specific scenes or concepts within the movie that relate to the
Theory of Relativity.
Time Travel Exists! Throughout the film, the spacecraft Endurance travels at relativistic
speeds, approaching the speed of light. This is particularly evident during their journey
to the wormhole and the planetary systems where a giant black hole called Gargantua
is present.
Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, talks about the physics of moving bodies or objects at
constant speed close to the speed of light, can have effects such as time dilation. The
high-speed travel of the Endurance and the effect of gravity by the black hole would
result in time dilation, contributing to the differences of time experienced by the crew
and people on Earth. So if everyone on Earth is moving at the same speed, and you go
in a rocket traveling in lightspeed, then you’re moving at a different rate to them so you
are ageing slower than they’re ageing. With that, we can say that time travel is
possible. Unfortunately, you can’t travel back to the past, you can only travel to the
future.
3. Examine how the movie portrays concepts such as time dilation,
gravitational time dilation, and the bending of space-time.
The movie "Interstellar" portrays several concepts from the Theory of Relativity with
considerable attention to sceintific accuracy. Through concepts of time dilation from
high-speed travel or due to intense gravity like the scene from Miller’s Planet where 1
hour is equivalent to 7 years. The immense gravitational pull of Gargantua causes time
to slow down significantly on the planet, and the bending of space-time, from the
wormhole to the super massive black hole. The depiction shows an accurate
representation of gravitational lensing, where light bends around the black hole due to
its strong gravitational pull, creating a distorted image of stars and objects behind it as
well as affecting the path of light.
The film uses these concepts as integral elements of the plot and striking visual
representation of the scientific concept. With that, it outstanding depiction of some of
the most complex aspects of modern physics.
4. Share your personal thoughts and reactions to the movie and its
depiction of relativistic concepts.
As for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie from the plot, the casting, the music, the
visual and depiction of AstroPhysics, especially Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. It is indeed
a remarkable film and for me will be regarded as one of the best films of this century.
The depiction of relativistic concept is both educational and awe-inspiring, making it a
standout in the genre of sci-fi. The stunning visual representation of space, wormhole
and black hole leaves you wanting more.
While I understand the film’s ambition to depict these concepts with high accuracy, it
can also have some weakness. I find some parts of the movie quite difficult to follow
especially in the Tesseract scene, where it was stated by Cooper, that some advanced
civilization created this 5-dimensional realm to communicate with her daughter through
Love in order to solve the equation what Dr. Brand couldn’t.
5. Reflect on how watching Interstellar has influenced your understanding
or appreciation of the Theory of Relativity.
Watching "Interstellar" has significantly influenced my understanding and appreciation
of the Theory of Relativity it provides an engaging way to grasp the complex concept
of the Theory of Relativity. Seeing time dilation in the movie, especially on Miller's Planet
where time passes differently due to the gravitational pull of Gargantua, helps to
internalize and better understand the idea of time being relative and influenced by
gravity. This movie made me love science more especially astrophysics, it sparked
curiosity and motivates further knowledge about the Theory of Relativity. The depictions
of the given scientific aspects encouraged the audience to dive deeper into these
subjects, stimulating greater interest in science and our universe.

Interstellar and the Theory of Relativity.
