Step 1: Hypothesis / Problem Statement
(±50 words)
The heavy rainfall that occurred during the 2022 Durban floods caused severe mass
movement such as landslides and mudslides. These disasters destroyed homes, roads, bridges,
and other infrastructure. Many people lost their lives while thousands of families became
homeless. Poor drainage systems, deforestation, and informal settlements on steep slopes
increased the damage caused by the floods and mass movement.
Step 2: Background Information (75–100
words)
Mass movement is the movement of soil, mud, and rocks down a slope due to gravity. It
usually happens when soil becomes weak and unstable after heavy rainfall. In April 2022,
Durban and many parts of KwaZulu-Natal experienced extremely heavy rainfall that caused
severe flooding and landslides. Roads collapsed, bridges were washed away, and many
homes were destroyed. More than 430 people died and thousands of residents were displaced.
Informal settlements built near rivers and on steep slopes were the most affected because the
ground became saturated with water and collapsed easily.
The floods were described as one of the worst natural disasters in South African history.
Climate change is also believed to have increased the intensity of the rainfall. Scientists
explained that warmer temperatures can cause stronger storms and heavier rainfall, leading to
more flooding and mass movement events.
Step 3: Mapping
Study Area
The study area is Durban, which is located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the eastern
coast of South Africa.
Location of Durban
Durban lies next to the Indian Ocean.
Coordinates: approximately 29.9° South and 31.0° East.
Durban receives high rainfall because of its warm coastal climate.
Many communities are built on steep hillsides and near rivers.
Why Durban Was Vulnerable to Floods and Mass Movement
Durban is vulnerable to floods and landslides because of:
Heavy rainfall during storms.
Steep slopes and hills.
Poor drainage systems.
Informal settlements built in dangerous areas.
Removal of natural vegetation.
Climate change increasing extreme weather events.
Areas Mostly Affected
Some of the areas badly affected during the floods included:
Umlazi
Inanda
Ntuzuma
KwaMashu
Clermont
Pinetown

Step 4: Methods of Data Collection
Data collection refers to the process of gathering information for the research task. Both
primary and secondary sources of information were used.
Primary Data Collection
1. Questionnaires
Questionnaires were given to community members to collect information about how the
floods affected them.
2. Interviews
Interviews were conducted with residents and victims of the floods to understand their
experiences and challenges.
3. Observation
The researcher observed damaged houses, roads, rivers, and slopes affected by landslides.
4. Photographs
Pictures were taken to provide evidence of flood damage and mass movement in affected
communities.
Secondary Data Collection
1. Internet Sources
Information was collected from reliable websites and online news reports.
2. Newspapers
Newspapers provided reports about deaths, homelessness, and rescue operations during the
floods.
3. Government Reports
Government reports gave information about the damage caused to infrastructure and
communities.
4. Textbooks
Geography textbooks were used to explain the concept of mass movement and flooding.
5. Weather Reports
Weather reports helped explain the amount of rainfall received during the floods.
Step 5: Analysis and Synthesis (Main
Discussion)
The 2022 Durban floods caused severe destruction across KwaZulu-Natal. Heavy rainfall fell
continuously over several days, causing rivers to overflow and slopes to collapse. The soil
became saturated with water, making it weak and unstable. As a result, landslides and
mudslides occurred in many areas.
Mass movement became a major problem because large amounts of mud, rocks, and soil
moved down slopes and destroyed homes and roads. Informal settlements built on steep
hillsides were badly affected because the houses were not strong enough to survive the floods
and landslides.
Thousands of people lost their homes and had to move into temporary shelters. Many
families also lost their belongings, including clothes, food, furniture, and important
documents. Children could not attend school because schools and roads were damaged.
The floods caused serious damage to infrastructure. Roads were washed away, bridges
collapsed, and electricity lines were destroyed. Water supply systems were also damaged,
leaving many communities without clean water for several days.
The economy of Durban was negatively affected because businesses closed and transport
systems were interrupted. The Durban harbour, which is one of the busiest ports in South
Africa, was also affected by the flooding. This slowed down trade and caused financial
losses.
Causes of Mass Movement During the Durban Floods
1. Heavy Rainfall
The main cause of the landslides and mudslides was the extremely heavy rainfall received
during April 2022. Too much water entered the soil, causing it to lose stability.
2. Steep Slopes
Many communities in Durban are built on steep hills. Gravity caused wet soil and rocks to
move down these slopes.
3. Deforestation
The removal of trees and vegetation weakened the soil because plant roots normally help hold
soil together.
4. Poor Drainage Systems
Blocked drains and poor stormwater systems increased flooding in many communities.
5. Informal Settlements
Many informal settlements were built in unsafe areas close to rivers and unstable slopes.
6. Climate Change
Scientists believe climate change increased the intensity of rainfall and storms, leading to
more flooding disasters.
Social Impacts of the Floods
More than 430 people died.
Thousands of people became homeless.
Families were separated during rescue operations.
Schools and clinics were damaged.
Many people experienced stress and trauma.
Communities lost access to electricity and clean water.
Economic Impacts of the Floods
Roads and bridges had to be repaired.
Businesses lost money because of flood damage.
Government spent billions of rand on rebuilding infrastructure.
Transport and trade were disrupted.
Many people lost jobs and income.
Environmental Impacts of the Floods
Soil erosion increased.
Rivers became polluted.
Vegetation was destroyed.
Large amounts of waste and debris entered rivers and oceans.
Habitats of animals were damaged.
Step 6: Recommendations and Possible
Solutions
The following solutions can help reduce the impact of floods and mass movement in the
future:
1. Improve Drainage Systems
Government must improve stormwater drainage systems to reduce flooding during heavy
rainfall.
2. Avoid Building on Steep Slopes
Houses should not be built in dangerous areas such as steep slopes and floodplains.
3. Plant More Trees
Trees and vegetation help hold soil together and reduce erosion.
4. Community Education
Communities should be educated about flood risks and safety measures.
5. Early Warning Systems
Weather warning systems must be improved so that people can evacuate before disasters
occur.
6. Better Housing
Government should provide safer housing for communities living in informal settlements.
7. Disaster Management Plans
Local municipalities should prepare emergency plans for future floods and landslides.
Step 7: Conclusion
The 2022 Durban floods clearly showed the dangers of mass movement and flooding in
South Africa. Heavy rainfall caused severe landslides and mudslides that destroyed homes,
roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. Many people lost their lives, while thousands of
families became homeless and suffered emotionally and financially.
The disaster also showed that poor planning, informal settlements, and climate change can
increase the impact of natural hazards. Communities living on steep slopes and near rivers
were the most vulnerable. Government and communities need to work together to improve
drainage systems, provide safer housing, and educate people about disaster risks.
If proper planning and prevention measures are implemented, the impact of future floods and
mass movement disasters can be reduced.
