We can use the past simple of the verb to be to talk about situations and states in the past.

How to use it

Use was for I, he, she and it. Use were for you, we and they.

Past simple: Use

Completed actions in the past

We use the past simple to talk about actions or events that happened
in the past. We know, or we say, when the events happened.

• I saw Jim yesterday.

• She moved to Granada three years ago.
Past habits

We use the past simple to talk about past habits (things that we did
more or less often).

• She washed her hair every day.

• I often played in the park when we were children.
Situations that were true in the past
We also use the past simple to talk about things that were true in the past.

• My grandfather had two brothers.

• He lived with my grandparents as a child.
Events in chronological order

We use the past simple to describe the main events of a story in chronological order.

• When I arrived home, I took off my shoes then I relaxed on the sofa.

Last weekend I went to a family party to

celebrate my cousin’s birthday, and it was
a very fun day. Many relatives came to
the house, and the music was loud and
cheerful. At the beginning, we played
some games in the yard and laughed a lot
together. Later, we ate delicious food like
grilled chicken, rice, salad, and a big
chocolate cake. After eating, my cousins
and I danced to our favorite songs and
tried to teach my uncle some funny dance moves. Everyone was laughing because he was dancing in a

out the candles. Then we took many photos to remember the moment. I really enjoyed this event

1. Writing Activity – Past Simple

Instructions: Write a paragraph of 8–10 sentences describing

a recent event, holiday, or trip you experienced. Use the past
simple tense to explain what happened. Include details
such as where you went, who you were with, what
activities you did, what you ate, and how you felt during
the event. Try to use time expressions like last weekend,
yesterday, last month, or last year. Also include sequence
words such as first, then, later, after that, and finally to organize your ideas. Make sure your
sentences are clear and use correct past simple verbs. At the end, write one sentence explaining why
the experience was special or memorable for you.
