expect to wait at least 5 mins for the phone. Find the increase in flow of arrivals which will justify
the second booth.

phone is free?

minutes. Customers spend an average of 15 minutes in the barber chair. If an hour is used as the
unit of time, then

(c). What is the expected number of customers in the barber shop?
(d). What is the expected number of customers in the queue?
(e). How much time can a customer expect to spend in the barbershop?
(f). Find the average time that a customer spends in the queue.
5. Customers arrive at one-man barber shop according to a Poisson process with a mean interval time of
12 mins. Customers spend an average of 10 mins in the barber’s chair.
(a). What is the expected number of customers in the barber shop and in the queue?
(b). Calculate the % of time of arrival, can walk straight into the barber’s chair without having to
wait.
(c). How much time can customer expect to spend in the barber’s shop?
(d). Management will provide another chair and another barber, when a customer’s waiting time
in the shop exceeds 1.25h. How much must the average rate of arrivals increase to warrant a
second barber?
(e). What is the average time customer spending in the queue?
(f). What is the probability that the waiting time in the system is greater than 30 mins?

6. In a given M-M-1 queuing system, the average arrival is 4 customer per min and .Find

(a). The mean number of customers in the system.

(b). The mean number of customers in the queue.
(c). Probability that the server is idle.
(d). Mean waiting time in the system?
7. In a railway marshalling yard, goods train arrive at a rate of 30 trains per day. Assuming that the inter-
arrival time follows an exponential distribution and the service time distribution is also exponentially with
an average of 36 mins., Calculate the following:

(a). The mean queue size.

(b). The probability that the queue size exceeds 10.
(c). If the input of trains increases to an average of 33 per day what will be the change in the
above quantities?

MODEL -II
1. A petrol pump station has 4 pumps. The service times follow the exponential distribution with a
mean of 6 min. and car arrive for service in a Poisson process at the rate of 30 cars per hour.
a) What is the probability that an arrival would have to wait in line?
b) Find the average waiting time, average time spent in the system and the average number
of cars in the system?
c) For what % of time would a pump be idle on an average?
2. A supermarket has 2 girls attending to sales at the counters. If the service time for each customer
is exponential with mean 4 min and if people arrive in Poisson process at the rate of 10 per hour,
a) What is the probability that a customer has to wait for service?
b) What is the expected % of idle time for each girl?
c) If the customer has to wait in the queue, what is the expected length of his waiting time?
3. There are 3 typists in an office. Each typist can type an average of 6 letters per hour. If letters
arrive for being typed at the rate of 15 letters per hour.
(a) What fraction of time all the typists will be busy?
(b) What is the average number of letters waiting to be typed?
(c) What is the average time a letter has to spend for waiting and for being typed?

MODEL -III
1. Patients arrive at a clinic according to Poisson distribution at a rate of 30 patients per hour. The
waiting room does not accommodate more than 14 patients. Examination time per patient is
exponential with mean rate of 20 per hour.
a) Find the effective arrival rate at the clinic.
(b) What is the probability that an arriving patient will not wait?
(c) What is the expected waiting time until a patient is discharged from the clinic?
2. The one-person barber shop can accommodate a maximum of 5 people at a time (4 waiting and 1
getting hair-cut). Customers arrive according to a Poisson distribution with mean 5/hr. The barber
cuts hair at an average rate of 4/hr. (Exponential service time).
