EVEN SEMESTER EXAMINATION, 2024 – 25

1st Year (2nd Sem) [Link].
ENGINEERING PHYSICS

Duration: 3:00 hrs Max Marks: 100

Note: - Attempt all questions. All Questions carry equal marks. In case of any ambiguity or missing
data, the same may be assumed and state the assumption made in the answer. The part (a) of each
question has two questions with 5 marks each and (b) & (c) parts are of 10 marks each.

Q 1. Answer any two parts of the following. (10x2= 20)

a) (i) Discuss the phenomenon of interference of light due to thin films and find the conditions of
maxima and minima for reflected light.
(ii) A diffraction grating is just able to resolve two lines of  =5140.34 Å and 5140.85 Å in the
first order. Will it resolve the lines 8037.20 Å and 8037.50 Å in the second order?
b) What are Newton’s rings? Explain their formation. Derive the expression for the diameter of bright
and dark Newton’s rings?
c) Discuss the phenomena of Fraunhofer’s diffraction at a slit and show that relative intensities of the

successive maximas are nearly 1:9𝜋2:25𝜋2:49𝜋2:...
Q 2. Answer any two parts of the following. (10x2= 20)
a) (i) Calculate the thickness of a half wave plate of quartz for a wavelength of 5000 Å. Here 𝜇𝑒 =
1.553 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜇0 = 1.544
(ii) Describe the method to produce and detect circularly and elliptically polarized light.
b) What are Einstein's coefficients? Obtain a relation between them. Also discuss the essential
conditions for laser action.
c) Explain the construction and working of helium neon laser or gas laser. How it is superior then
Ruby laser?
Q 3. Answer any two parts of the following. (10x2= 20)
a) (i) Calculate the value of Poynting vector at the surface of the sun if the power radiated by the sun is
3.8 ⨉ 1026 W and its radius is 7 ⨉108 m.
(ii) Explain the concept of displacement current. How does it makes the Ampere’s law valid for
non-steady state?
b) State and prove Poynting theorem for flow of energy in electromagnetic field.
c) Explain Langevin’s theory of diamagnetism and discuss its limitations.
Q 4. Answer any two parts of the following. (10x2= 20)
a) (i) Establish a relation between phase velocity and group velocity for dispersive and non- dispersive
medium.
(ii) In a Compton scattering experiment X-ray of wavelength 0.015Å is scattered at 60°, find the
wavelength of scattered X- ray.

b) Derive an expression for Hall voltage and Hall coefficient and also explain how the Hall coefficient
can be used to determine the nature of charge carriers in a material.
c) Describe the working of a solar cell with construction, materials used, and I-V characteristics under
sunlight.
