Problem Identification & Formulation - Summary

What is Research?
Research is the systematic process of finding solutions to a problem through study and analysis.
In business, research helps address specific workplace issues.

Hypothetico-Deductive Method (Karl Popper)

A structured approach to generating knowledge through:
1. Identifying a broad problem area
2. Defining the problem statement
3. Developing hypotheses
4. Determining measures
5. Data collection
6. Data analysis
7. Interpreting data

Importance of Problem Definition

- The first critical step in research
- Helps in identifying real problems/opportunities
- Ensures research efforts are not wasted

Problem-Definition Process
1. Understand the Situation - Conduct a situation analysis, interviews, and brainstorming.
2. Identify the Problem from Symptoms - Use interrogative techniques and the Iceberg Principle.
3. Define the Problem Statement - Clearly articulate the issue for investigation.

Research Problem & Statement

- A research problem highlights an area needing study or improvement.
- Components of a problem statement:
1. Problem Identification
2. Background Information
3. Scope of the Problem
4. Consequences
5. Knowledge Gaps
6. Proposed Solution
Decision Statements & Research Objectives
- A decision statement defines the key research question.
- Research objectives translate the problem into specific goals.

Examples of Research Questions

- Does remote work enhance productivity?
- What factors contribute to employee retention?
- How do incentives impact motivation?

Unit of Analysis in Research

- Individuals (employees, customers)
- Organizations
- Departments
- Products, geographical areas

Variables in Research
1. Independent Variable (IV) - The factor being manipulated.
2. Dependent Variable (DV) - The outcome being measured.
3. Control Variable (CV) - Factors kept constant to avoid influence.
4. Mediator Variable - Explains how IV affects DV.
5. Moderator Variable - Influences the strength of IV-DV relationship.

Conceptual Framework
A model illustrating relationships between variables to guide research.
