Distillation Column Design - Overview

Distillation is a separation process based on volatility differences. Main design steps: 1. Define feed
composition, flowrate, pressure, and desired product purities. 2. Select operating pressure. 3.
Determine minimum reflux ratio (Underwood method). 4. Select operating reflux ratio (typically
1.2-1.5 times minimum). 5. Estimate theoretical stages (Fenske and Gilliland methods). 6. Choose
tray or packed column. 7. Size the column diameter based on vapor flooding. 8. Size column height
from number of stages or HETP. 9. Design condenser and reboiler duties. 10. Perform hydraulic
and mechanical design checks. Key equations: Relative volatility: alpha = (y/x)/(y2/x2) Overall mass
balance: F=D+B Component balance: FzF=DxD+BxB
