“Disaster Predicted, Calamity Averted”
Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption was so strong that the ashes reached the
stratosphere and because of that it was able to circulate around the
world changing the global climate. The circulation of the ashes actually
made the whole world cooler along with the eruption is change in
landscape and death of human, animal and plant life. It also destroyed
the homes and livelihood of thousands of people therefore affecting the
economy heavily. House and bridges destroyed, airports are closed.
Heavy rain from the Yunga and the mud from the eruption causing
floods. Farmlands became unusable for years because of the ashes. The
fast actions and right decision of Dr. Ray Punongbayan and his team
saved possible thousands of human life. Since such disasters are hard to
predict and some are even unpredictable, it was the right choice to
evacuate. Prevention is the protection, they can’t prevent the eruption
but they can prevent the loss of lives which they using the signs and
data they have gathered. Even against the skepticism of the
government and the public they stand their ground like when I deal with
high risk I always say “It is better to be than sorry”. Almost sixty
thousand people was evacuated, eight hundred forty seven lost their
lives and about a million lost their homes. The damages are absolutely
devastating. If was on the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Team, I
would be warning people what they can do and what they should, I
would be trying my best to reduce the loss of lives and lessening the
exposure to hazards. Doing the best of our ability to mitigate the
destruction, loss of lives and injury of other people.
