1. A beekeeper maintained two beehives. There are 1,256 drone bees in one hive and
2,532 drone bees in the other hive. How many drone bees were in the hives altogether?
Sol.
Number of drone bees in one hive = 1,256
Number of drone bees in other hive = 2,532
Total drone bees = 1,256 + 2,532 = 3,788

2. A farmer picked 6,820 apples, 3,589 peaches and 1,733 mangoes from his farm. How
many fruits were collected in all?
Sol. Number of apples = 6,820
Number of peaches = 3,589

Total fruits = 6,820 + 3,589 + 1,733 = 12,142

Properties of addition: -
1. Order property: - Changing the order of the two addends does not change the
sum . This is called the order property of addition.
2. Additive property: - The sum of any number and 0 is that number itself. This is
called the additive property of zero.
3. Associative property: - The way in which we group the addends doesn’t change
the sum. This is called the grouping or associative property of addition.

The smallest 6 digit number = 1,00,000
The largest 5 digit number = 99,999
Difference = 1,00,000 – 99,999 = 1
3. Mr. Sinha earned Rs 3,47,450 in two year. In one year, he earned Rs 88,673. How
much did he earn in the other year?
Sol. Mr. Sinha earned in two years = Rs 3,47,450
He earned in one year = Rs 88,673
He earned in the other year = 3,47,450 – 88,673 = Rs 2,58,777
