Introduction
Research is an important skill that helps people understand the world through systematic inquiry. In
Senior High School, learning research prepares students to solve problems, think critically, and make
informed decisions.
What is Research?
Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information to
answer questions or solve problems.
It involves:
• Asking meaningful questions
• Gathering relevant information
• Analyzing data or evidence
• Drawing conclusions based on facts
In simple terms, research is finding answers using evidence, not guesses or opinions.
Research in Everyday Life
Research is not limited to scientists or scholars. People do research every day when they:
• Compare products before buying
• Read reviews before watching a movie
• Search for symptoms of an illness
• Ask for feedback before making decisions
• Look for the best route to avoid traffic
These activities show that research is part of everyday decision-making.
Importance of Research
Research is important because it:
• Helps solve real-world problems
• Improves decision-making
• Develops critical thinking skills
• Expands knowledge and understanding

Characteristics of Research
Good research is:
• Systematic – follows a step-by-step process
• Objective – based on facts, not personal opinions

• Ethical – follows proper rules and honesty
• Replicable – can be verified or repeated
Types of Questions in Research
Not all questions are researchable. Good research questions are:
• Clear and specific
• Answerable using data
• Focused on a problem or issue
• Based on observation or real-life situations
Examples:
• “What study habits improve academic performance among SHS students?”
• “How does social media usage affect sleep patterns?”
Activity 1: Possible Research Topics We Want to Explore
Instructions
1. Work with your assigned group.
2. Discuss possible problems, issues, or topics that interest you (school, community, social
media, education, etc.).
3. Brainstorm at least FIVE (5) possible research titles.
4. Your titles should be:
a. Clear and specific
b. Related to real-life situations
c. Feasible for Senior High School level
d. Not too broad or too vague
5. Write your answers on a clean sheet of paper.
Guide Questions for Brainstorming
Use these questions to help your group think of ideas:
• What problems do students experience in school?
• What issues do you notice in your community?
• What habits or behaviors of students can be studied?
• What challenges do young people face today?
• What topics are you personally curious about?
Reminders
• Be creative but realistic.
• Avoid copying from other groups.
• Ensure that all members contribute ideas.
• You will revise these titles in future lessons.
