1.1 — What is a Computer?
• A computer is an electronic device that accepts data (INPUT), processes it, stores it, and produces
results (OUTPUT).
• Full form of COMPUTER: Commonly Operated Machine Particularly Used in Technical and Educational
Research.
• A computer works on the IPO cycle: Input → Process → Output.
• Father of Computer: Charles Babbage (invented Analytical Engine, 1837).
• Father of Modern Computer: Alan Turing (theoretical foundation, Turing Machine concept).
• First Programmer: Ada Lovelace (wrote first algorithm for Babbage's Analytical Engine).
1.2 — Generations of Computers
Generation Period Technology Used Key Feature /
Example
1st Generation 1940-1956 Vacuum Tubes Very large, slow, used

Example: ENIAC,
UNIVAC.
2nd Generation 1956-1963 Transistors Smaller, faster, more
reliable. Used assembly
language. Example:
IBM 1401.
3rd Generation 1964-1971 Integrated Circuits (ICs) Even smaller, faster,
cheaper. High-level

1.7 — Storage Units (Most Tested in PPSC)
Unit Symbol Equivalent Approx. Real Size
Bit b Smallest unit of data — Single binary value
0 or 1 (binary digit)
Byte B 8 bits = 1 Byte 1 character (e.g. letter
'A')
Kilobyte KB 1,024 Bytes = 1 KB A short text document
Megabyte MB 1,024 KB = 1 MB A 3-minute MP3 song
(~3-4 MB)
Gigabyte GB 1,024 MB = 1 GB A movie file (~1-2 GB)
Terabyte TB 1,024 GB = 1 TB A large hard disk drive
Petabyte PB 1,024 TB = 1 PB Large data centres
Exabyte EB 1,024 PB = 1 EB Global internet traffic
Unit Symbol Equivalent Approx. Real Size
per month
PPSC TIP: Memory: 1 KB = 1,024 Bytes (NOT 1,000). This is because computers use binary (base 2)
and 2^10 = 1,024.

Decimal Base 10 0 to 9 10, 25, 100 Used by humans
(normal numbers) in everyday life
Octal Base 8 0 to 7 12 in octal = 10 in Sometimes used
decimal in programming
Hexadecimal Base 16 0-9 and A-F A in hex = 10, F = Used in memory
15, FF = 255 addresses, HTML
colour codes
(#FFFFFF = white)
Decimal Binary Hexadecimal Decimal Binary Hexadecimal
0 0000 0 8 1000 8
1 0001 1 9 1001 9

• MS Excel functions (SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP) and file extensions (.xlsx, .docx, .pptx) are very
commonly tested.
• Abbreviations table (Part 5.1) covers at least 2-3 MCQs in every PPSC paper. Learn all full forms.
• Quick Facts table (Part 5.2) is your revision sheet — read it daily for 5 minutes.
• Study Computer 3 times per week as your plan says — 45 minutes is enough per session.
