 What is defensive driving?
• Defensive Driving is a art of driving while preventing
accidents in spite of the wrong action of others and
presence of adverse driving conditions.
Wrong actions of others:-
1. Driving although they are unskilled.
2. Driving while under the influence of liquor or drug
3. Driving as they if they are the only one using road
better known as escape artist.
4. Driving vehicles that are no longer road-worthy.
5. Driving recklessly as they belong to the untouchable
group.
Adverse Driving Conditions:-
1. Light Conditions- Glaring, dim
2. Weather Conditions- making visibility poor
3. Road Condition- Slippery, Downhill, narrow
4. Traffic Conditions- heavy, congested with
pedestrian
5. Vehicle condition- poor brakes
6. Driver- sleepy, tired, angry drunk.
Safe Driving is a very much a
mental process requiring thought,
attention, courtesy, wisdom and
sense of alert responsibility.

 Why Drivers Required Training?

 Driving is something we do daily.

 It’s the most dangerous thing we do!
 Statistics from the General Directorate of Traffic
show that the Kingdom has 23 deaths per 100,000
people, with on average 19.1 road fatalities occurring
daily.
 What is the Driver’s Responsibility?

All drivers are responsible for safely operating the vehicle according
to a set daily schedule. They must ensure that the vehicle is in good
operating condition at all times and are complying with the Saudi
Arabian Government traffic laws and regulation in line with the
UWHD Aramco Project requirement.

Remember: the people are more valuable than any scheduled arrival
time.
 Driver’s Requirements
• All contractors must employ only qualified personnel
as drivers of motor vehicles.
• As per government law that each person driving a
motor vehicle must possess his SAG driver's license
• It is the responsibility of the driver's supervisor, or
managers to verify the driver's qualifications prior to
his employment.
• All Drivers must attend and obtain certificate by
completing the Online Qyadati safe driving Course.
PPE
As a Driver - Personal Protective Equipment is required in your
vehicle, if you have to exit the vehicle “Onsite” the UWHD
Aramco Project
Vehicle Condition
 It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure his vehicle
is safe to operate. They should inspect their vehicle
before operating it in order to determine if the
following items have been provided and are in
satisfactory condition:
Pre-Trip Inspection
Take a walk around your vehicle.
 Windows clean?
 Lights/signals clean & working.
 Tires properly inflated / tread wear.
 Fluid leaks on the ground.
 Plates current???
Vehicle Condition
 Inside the Vehicle
 Adjust your seat and fasten seat belt
 Check and adjust all Mirrors
 Adjust your Headrest
 Assure doors fully closed and secured
 Scan the gauges
 On the Road
 Put in to traffic carefully
 Practice “Defensive driving”- expect or unexpected
 Stick your lane, except when passing
 Pass with care but don’t hesitate
 Check all intersections-expect someone to be coming from
other way
Always use your lights
Watch out for pedestrians- specially children and old
people
Take your time
Slow down your dark
Dim your headlights when approaching a car or coming up

Defensive Driving Technique
A positive skilled mental approach to defensive
driving means being able to:

• Decide what action to take to avoid an unsafe
situation arising or to take immediate evasive
actions.
How to avoid collision with vehicle ahead
A positive skilled mental approach to defensive
driving means being able to:
• Stay Alerts- anticipate the hazards. Expect
anything to happen in front of you.
• Maintain a safe following Distance with vehicle
ahead. One car length for every 10 kph of your
speed or the “ two second rule”.
• Stay ahead of situation- watch for clues that may
spell accident.
• Start Stopping Sooner- Don’t trust your brakes.

• Maintain safe following distance with the vehicle
ahead.
• Signal well in advance
• Check your rear view mirror every now and then
• Always stop smoothly and gradually

• Keep as far to your right of center line as possible.

How to avoid intersection Collision
• Obey the law regarding the yield sign. When two vehicles
approach an intersection at the same time, the vehicle on left
shall give way to the vehicle on the right.
• Whenever a vehicle approaches an intersection with a stop
sign, the driver must the vehicle in to complete stop.
• Approach all intersection with your foot off the accelerator
and on the brake pedal

How to avoid other types of Vehicular Accidents

Pedestrians- as of today, there is no formula yet

developed on how to avoid accidents involving
pedestrians. However as we drive, you should always
be specially alert with the children, elderly and
drunk.
Animals- when you encounter animals on the road,
slow down and give as much room to the animals as
you pass slowly. Never blow your horn so loud.
