Local history
Local history is a captivating approach to understanding
the work, as defined by historians and educators. It
offers a personal, family, and community perspective,
serving as "a magazine of vivid and pregnant
illustrations of the general course of national history"
(Healey, 2008)

Local history provides insights into broader national

events, it holds intrinsic value on its own, focusing on
the history of smaller communities in which we all
reside. It explores the people and events that are
familier to us.
goal of Local history
• A primary objective of incorporating local history in the classroom
is to directly involve students. Mere acquisition of knowledge
through data gathering does not offer a sense of involvement.
Instead, students should be prompted to critically analyze data and
develop a motivation to question it.

•Ways of thinking about data and the introduction of new

terminologies are necessary.
Goal of Local history
When an event occurs, it is often recorded by an observer or
discussed with others. The way an event is perceived and
portrayed is known as an interpretation.

Historical evidence, or sources, can encompass various form,

including diaries, letters, journals and folklore.

Encouraging students to examine primary sources themselves

highlights the fact that history is not solely about famous
individuals; rather, it is also shaped by ordinary people who record
events in their lives and describe how those events impacted
them (Beckett, 2007).
why local history
matters?
01 Local museums and archives offer a fresh perspective on one's
community. Often, our study of history focuses on grand-scale events,
such as the rise and fall civilization or significant social and economic
changes that affect entire nations and people.

02 Local history serves as a microcosm, unveiling the intricate details and

stories that illustrate how societal changes impacted the lives of ordinary
individuals.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LOCAL HISTORY
IN THE PHILIPPINE History
It is unfortunate that a significant number of Filipino individuals
01 lacks interest in or understanding of Philippine history.

The problem lies in the nature of Philippine historiography, which,

for a considerable time, adhered to rigid western criteria and
02
approach often follows the principle of "no document, no history."
