COURSE & YEAR: SCHEDULE:

PROBLEM SET 1: DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

INSTRUCTIONS:
A. USE A4 BOND PAPER WITH 1 INCH RED BORDER.
B. WRITE THE WORDED PROBLEM BEFORE ANSWERING. START WITH THE GIVEN, UNKNOWN,
SOLUTION AND BOX YOUR FINAL ANSWER ONLY. WRITE LEGIBLY.
C. A MAXIMUM OF TWO PROBLEMS IN ONE BOND PAPER.
D. USE BLUE OR BLACK BALLPEN ONLY BUT FOR ILLUSTRATIONS YOU CAN USE COLORED PENS.

1. A body rotates according to the relation 𝛼 = 4𝑡 2 + 5, displacement being measured in

radians and time in seconds. If its initial angular velocity is 5rad/sec and the initial angular
displacement is zero. Compute the values of ω and Ɵ for the instant when t=3seconds.
2. A pulley rotating in the counterclockwise direction is attached to a box suspended from a
string. The box causes a constant angular acceleration α=-2.22rad/s².
a. How long does it take for the pulley to come to rest if the pulley’s initial angular
velocity is 5rad/s?
b. If the radius of the pulley is 6.23cm, what distance is the box lifted?
c. What angle does the pulley turn during this time?
3. A car travels a distance of 40ft in 3 seconds as it moves along a path of radius 3.33 feet.
Calculate for the linear and angular speed over the time period.
4. Determine the number of revolutions through which a pulley will rotate from rest if its
angular acceleration is increased uniformly from zero to 12rad/s² during 5 seconds and then
uniformly decreased to 5rad/s² during the next 4 seconds.
5. Initial angular velocity is 12rad/s and constant angular acceleration of 20rad/s²
a. Determine the magnitude of velocity of point A at the instant t=3seconds
b. Determine the magnitude of the tangential and normal component of
acceleration of point A at the instant t=3seconds
