Detailed Short Answers
Q. What is a computer network?
A computer network is a collection of interconnected devices such as computers, smartphones,
printers and servers that communicate and share resources through wired or wireless
communication media.
Q. What is Internet?
The Internet is a global network of interconnected networks that enables communication and
information exchange across the world.
Q. Applications of Internet
Email, instant messaging, video conferencing, social networking, file transfer, online shopping,
online banking, entertainment and education.
Q. What is data communication?
Data communication is the transmission of digital data between two or more devices through a
communication medium using agreed protocols.
Q. Five components of data communication
Message, Sender, Receiver, Transmission Medium and Protocol.
Q. What is a communication channel?
The path through which data travels from sender to receiver. It may be wired or wireless.
Q. What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted through a network in a given
amount of time.
Q. Explain maximum and actual bandwidth.
Maximum bandwidth is the speed promised by the service provider. Actual bandwidth is the speed
currently available. When many users share the same connection, actual bandwidth decreases.
Q. Why is actual bandwidth less?
Because available capacity is shared among users, network congestion occurs, and hardware or
signal limitations reduce effective speed.
Q. What is Data Transfer Rate?
The speed at which data is transferred from one location to another, measured in bps, Kbps, Mbps
or Gbps.
Q. What is a Protocol?
A protocol is a set of rules that governs communication between devices. Examples: TCP/IP,
HTTPS, SMTP.
Q. Significance of IP Address
It uniquely identifies a device on a network and helps data reach the correct destination.
Q. Types of Computer Networks
PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN.
Q. What is PAN?
A Personal Area Network connects personal devices within about 10 metres, such as a phone and
smartwatch.
Q. Describe Repeater, Hub, Switch, Router and Gateway
Repeater regenerates signals. Hub broadcasts data to all devices. Switch forwards data intelligently
to the correct device. Router connects networks and directs packets. Gateway connects networks
using different protocols.
Q. What is a Virus and how does it spread?
A virus is malicious self-replicating software. It spreads through infected files, email attachments,
websites and USB drives.
Q. How does a Firewall protect a network?
A firewall monitors incoming and outgoing traffic and blocks unauthorized or suspicious access.
Q. Discuss Phishing
Phishing is a cyberattack in which fake emails, websites or messages trick users into revealing
passwords, banking information or personal details.
Q. What is Spamming?
Spamming is the sending of unwanted bulk messages, usually advertisements or fraudulent
content.
Competency-Based Answers
1. Organization with 10 computers and a printer
Use a LAN with a router, switch, modem, Wi■Fi access, antivirus and firewall. Connect all
computers through the switch and share the printer over the network.
2. Slow Internet in library
Check bandwidth usage, number of users, router health, signal strength, malware infections and
ISP speed. Upgrade bandwidth if required.
3. Convince uncle to install antivirus
Online banking involves sensitive information. Antivirus protects against malware, phishing links,
spyware and ransomware, reducing the risk of financial loss.
