Mean and Variance of Sampling

Distribution
When we conduct studies in order to describe a characteristic or an
attribute of a population, we do not actually use the whole population
for our study especially when the population is too large. It is often
convenient to take a sample from a population for statistical
computations.

However, the values that describe the sample taken, such as

its mean and variance, may differ from those of the entire
population itself. To determine the properties of samples
compared to those of the entire population, we may analyze
a distribution whose data points are samples from the
original population, rather than single observations.

For instance, if we have a population of 20 observations,

we may take all possible samples containing 5
observations, then calculate and record the mean of
each of these. Such a distribution is known as a
sampling distribution of the sample mean.

In this unit, you will learn how to solve for the mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean. You will also learn how to compute for the standard
error of the mean.

STUDY GUIDE

Learn about It!

What we constructed in the Warm Up! activity is called a sampling distribution for the
sample mean.

In the Warm Up! activity, we constructed all possible samples of size 2 for a population of
size 5. We have learned from the previous lesson that the number of samples we can
obtain from a population is denoted by where is the population size and is the
sample size. From the activity in the Warm Up! there will be samples or 10 samples.

The following are the different samples from the population.

No. Sample
1 2, 6
2 2, 10
3 2, 14
4 2, 18
5 6, 10
6 6, 14
7 6, 18
8 10, 14
9 10, 18
10 14, 18

After we list down all possible samples from the population, we compute for the means of
all the samples, and obtain the following sample means.

No. Sample Sample Mean

7 6, 18 12
8 10, 14 12
9 10, 18 14
10 14, 18 16

In order to construct the sampling distribution for the sample means, we get the
probability of occurring for each sample means.

Sample

6 1 0.1
8 2 0.2
10 2 0.2
12 2 0.2
14 1 0.1
16 1 0.1

To get the expected value of the distribution, we apply the formula for the expected value,
which is . In this instance, refers to the sample mean.

From our previous lessons, this particular value that we obtained refers to the mean of all
the sample means that we obtain from the population. We can denote this by using the
symbol .
7

STUDY GUIDE

From the activity, we also obtained the population mean. To get the population mean, we
can add the observations and divide it by 5.

We can observe that the population mean is the same as the expected value . From
here, we can say that the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is equal
to the population mean. In symbols,

Let’s Practice!

Example 1: What is the mean of the sampling distribution for the sample mean for a
population with the following observations:

12, 20, 24, 32, 36

Solution: The mean of the sampling distribution for the sample means is equal to the
population mean.

that consists of the scores 1, 2, 3, 4, with sample size of 2. Compute as well
the mean of the sampling distribution using the expected value of the

Solution: The population contains four elements. This means that . We are
required to have a sample size of 2, therefore, . With these values, we
can say that the total number of samples that we can list is or 6 samples.
We then compute for the means of each sample.

that the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is equal to the quotient

In the Warm Up! activity, we are asked to get the square root of the variance of the
sampling distribution. This value that we have obtained is what we called as a standard
error.

Definition 3.1: The standard error is the standard deviation of

the sampling distribution of a statistic.

Specifically, the standard error of the mean is the standard deviation of the sample
means over all possible samples chosen from a population. Therefore, it is equal to the
square root of the variance of the sampling distribution of the mean. In symbols,

where is the standard deviation of the population and is the sample size. This shows
us that a larger sample size results in a smaller standard error of the mean. Thus, in
conducting a research, we tend to get a bigger sample size in order for us generalize the
characteristic or attribute of the population under study with the least possible error.

Let’s Practice!

Example 1: The variance of a sampling distribution of the sample mean is 16. What is the

Lesson 4: Solving Problems Involving the Mean and

Variance of a Sampling Distribution

Warm Up!

I give, you give, we share!

Materials Needed: pen, paper

Instructions:
1. Pick a partner.
2. Each one of you will give a number. After you say a number, your partner will
give another number different from what you have mentioned. You will do this
until you have six numbers already.
3. The six numbers that you have mentioned will be used as a population.
4. From the population, you need to construct the sampling distribution of the
sample mean using a sample size of 3.
5. As a pair, you will be solving the mean, variance and standard error of the
sampling distribution that you have.
6. After you did this, share the results to the class. Discuss how long you did the
activity and what steps did you do to make the activity.

Learn about It!

From our previous discussions, we have discussed how to solve for the mean, variance,
and standard error of a sampling distribution of the sample mean. The activity in Warm
Up! allowed you to recall these lessons.

STUDY GUIDE

We learned that in order for us to get the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample
mean, we get the expected value of the sampling distribution by multiplying the sample
mean by its corresponding probability and adding all of the results. We also learned that
to make it easier for us to compute for the mean of the sampling distribution of the
sample mean, we can simply get the population mean because the mean of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean is the same with the population mean.

We also learned that in order for us to get the variance of the sampling distribution of the
sample mean, we get the quotient of the population variance and the sample size. This
value gives us the variability of the sampling distribution. When we get the square root of
the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample mean, we will arrive at the value of
the standard error of the sampling distribution.

We can use these things in order for us to solve for word problems about a sampling
distribution of the sample mean.

Let’s Practice!

Example 1: A population has a mean of 14 and a standard deviation of 3. The sample

size used for the sampling distribution is . What are the values of the
mean, variance, and standard error of the sampling distribution of the mean?

Solution: Since the population mean is given as 14, the mean of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean is also 14. The mean of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean is equal to the population mean.

The variance on the other hand is the quotient of the population variance
and the sample size. It was given that the standard deviation of the
population is 3. When we square the standard deviation of the population,
we get the variance of the population. Thus, the variance is .

STUDY GUIDE

To get the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample mean, we

substitute the population variance and the sample size to the formula.

Therefore, the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is

0.9.

For the standard error of the sampling distribution of the sample mean, we
simply get the square root of the variance of the sampling distribution of the
sample mean.

Therefore, the standard error of the sampling distribution of the sample

mean is 0.95.

sampling distribution of the sample mean.

Therefore, the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is 1.2
kg.
