Introduction
This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to the proposed system and estab-
lishes the foundation for the entire project. It begins by discussing the importance of smart
automation, energy conservation, and intelligent environmental control in modern indoor
environments. The chapter explains the limitations of traditional fan control systems and
highlights the need for an automated solution capable of adjusting cooling conditions ac-
cording to room occupancy and temperature.
The advancement of technology in recent years has significantly transformed conventional
systems into intelligent and automated solutions capable of operating with minimal human
intervention. Among these technological developments, the Internet of Things (IoT), em-
bedded systems, and automation technologies have emerged as major contributors toward
creating smart and energy-efficient environments. Automation systems are now widely used
in homes, offices, industries, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities to improve
operational efficiency, enhance user convenience, and reduce energy consumption. Environ-
mental control systems, particularly cooling and ventilation systems, are among the most
important applications of automation technology because they directly influence human com-
fort and energy utilization.[2][3]
1.1 What is an Intelligent Adaptive Fan Controller?
An Intelligent Adaptive Fan Controller is an advanced environmental control system de-
signed to automatically regulate fan operation according to changing environmental condi-
tions. Unlike conventional fan systems that require users to manually switch the fan ON
or OFF and continuously adjust the speed according to personal comfort requirements, an
intelligent adaptive controller performs these operations automatically through the use of
sensors, embedded processing units, and control algorithms. The primary objective of such
a system is to maintain a comfortable indoor environment while simultaneously minimizing
unnecessary energy consumption.
With the rapid development of embedded systems, automation technologies, and Internet
of Things (IoT) applications, traditional electrical appliances are increasingly being trans-
formed into smart devices capable of making decisions based on real-time environmental
data. An intelligent adaptive fan controller represents one such application where sensing,
monitoring, processing, and control functions are integrated into a single automated plat-
form. By continuously observing environmental conditions and user occupancy patterns,
the system can dynamically regulate cooling performance according to actual requirements
rather than relying on fixed operating conditions.[9]
The integration of multiple sensing technologies is one of the most significant characteris-
tics of modern adaptive control systems. Environmental conditions are influenced by various
parameters, and relying on a single sensor often fails to provide a complete representation
of actual room conditions. Therefore, researchers have increasingly focused on combining
multiple sensing mechanisms to improve decision-making accuracy. Occupancy information
1
provides insight into room utilization and heat generation levels, while temperature mea-
surements provide direct information about thermal conditions. The simultaneous analysis
of both parameters enables more accurate environmental control compared to conventional
systems that rely on only one variable.
As illustrated in Figure 1.1, the proposed system adopts this multi-parameter monitoring
approach by integrating occupancy detection and temperature sensing within a unified ar-
chitecture. This enables the controller to make intelligent decisions based on comprehensive
environmental information rather than isolated sensor readings.
The proposed system presented in this project utilizes occupancy monitoring and temper-
ature sensing as the primary environmental parameters for decision making. As illustrated
in Figure 1.1, two IR sensor modules are used for detecting people entering and leaving the
room. These sensors continuously monitor human movement and calculate the occupancy
count of the room. At the same time, a DHT11 temperature sensor measures the ambient
temperature and provides real-time environmental information to the ESP32 controller. The
ESP32 acts as the central processing unit responsible for collecting sensor data, analyzing
environmental conditions, and determining the required cooling level.[4][5]
The evolution of fan control technology has undergone significant transformation over the
past few decades. Initially, fan systems were designed to operate using simple mechanical
switches that allowed only basic ON/OFF functionality. As technology progressed, regu-
lators were introduced to provide multiple speed levels. Although these systems improved
user control to some extent, they still depended entirely on manual intervention. The user
was responsible for continuously adjusting the speed according to environmental conditions,
occupancy levels, and personal comfort requirements. Such dependence on manual operation
often resulted in inefficient energy utilization and inconsistent cooling performance.
With the advancement of embedded systems and microcontroller technology, researchers
began exploring intelligent control mechanisms capable of automating appliance operation.
Embedded controllers made it possible to continuously collect environmental information,
process data in real time, and execute automatic control actions without human involvement.
This development laid the foundation for intelligent environmental management systems ca-
pable of improving both efficiency and convenience. Modern adaptive fan controllers repre-
2
sent a direct outcome of these technological advancements and have become an important
component of smart building automation systems.[11]
The integration of occupancy monitoring and temperature sensing significantly improves
the intelligence of the system. In conventional fan systems, the fan may continue operating
even when the room is empty or when cooling requirements are minimal. However, in the
proposed system, environmental decisions are made based on actual room conditions. If
the room occupancy increases or the temperature rises beyond a certain level, the controller
automatically increases fan speed. Similarly, when occupancy decreases or temperature
falls, the fan speed is reduced accordingly. This adaptive control mechanism ensures efficient
utilization of electrical energy while maintaining user comfort.
As shown in Figure 1.1, the ESP32 controller performs the decision-making process using
the collected occupancy and temperature information. Based on these parameters, the con-
troller generates Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signals that are supplied to a MOSFET
driver circuit. The MOSFET driver subsequently controls the speed of the DC fan. PWM-
based control allows smooth speed variation and improves energy efficiency by regulating
the amount of power supplied to the fan according to actual cooling requirements.
The proposed system also incorporates various monitoring and user interaction features.
The occupancy count, temperature readings, fan speed, and operating mode are displayed
through a 16×2 LCD display, providing real-time local monitoring capability. Additionally,
the ESP32 hosts a web-based dashboard that allows users to monitor system parameters
and control fan operation remotely through a browser interface. A Piezo buzzer is also
integrated into the system to provide audible warning alerts whenever abnormal temperature
conditions are detected. These features collectively transform a conventional fan system into
an intelligent and adaptive environmental control platform.
The concept of intelligent adaptive control has become increasingly important in modern
smart building applications because it enables appliances to respond dynamically to changing
environmental conditions. By combining sensing technologies, embedded processing, wire-
less communication, and automated control mechanisms, intelligent adaptive fan controllers
contribute significantly toward energy conservation, environmental comfort, and sustainable
infrastructure development. The architecture illustrated in **Figure 1.1** demonstrates how
multiple hardware and software modules can be integrated to create a comprehensive envi-
ronmental monitoring and fan automation solution capable of performing intelligent decision
making in real time.[4][6]
1.2 Why is an Intelligent Adaptive Fan Controller Necessary?
The necessity for intelligent adaptive fan controllers arises from the increasing demand
for energy-efficient environmental control systems and the growing importance of sustain-
able resource utilization. In modern residential, educational, commercial, and industrial
environments, fans are among the most frequently used electrical appliances. Despite their
widespread usage, most conventional fan systems continue to operate using manual controls
and fixed speed settings. Such systems rely entirely on human intervention and are often
incapable of responding effectively to changing environmental conditions.
The necessity of intelligent environmental control systems has become increasingly evident
due to the rapid growth in global electricity demand. Buildings account for a substantial
3
portion of worldwide energy consumption, and ventilation systems contribute significantly
to this energy usage. Studies have shown that inefficient operation of electrical appliances
often results in considerable energy wastage, especially in educational institutions, commer-
cial offices, and public infrastructures where equipment may remain active even when not
required. Consequently, improving appliance efficiency through automation has become a
major objective in energy management research.[7][8]
Furthermore, environmental sustainability has emerged as a critical global concern. Gov-
ernments, industries, and educational institutions are actively promoting technologies ca-
pable of reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact. Intelligent
automation systems directly contribute toward these objectives by ensuring that electrical
devices operate only when necessary and at optimal performance levels. By continuously
adapting appliance operation according to environmental requirements, intelligent fan con-
trollers support sustainable development initiatives while simultaneously reducing operating
costs.
In many practical situations, users forget to switch OFF fans after leaving a room or fail
to adjust the fan speed according to occupancy and temperature variations. As a result, fans
continue consuming electrical energy even when cooling requirements are low or completely
absent. This leads to unnecessary electricity wastage, increased operational costs, and inef-
ficient utilization of energy resources. Considering the growing global emphasis on energy
conservation and environmental sustainability, the development of intelligent automation
systems capable of optimizing appliance operation has become extremely important.[4][10]
Another major factor contributing to the necessity of intelligent fan control systems is
the continuous variation in indoor environmental conditions. Temperature levels inside class-
rooms, offices, conference halls, libraries, laboratories, and residential buildings are influenced
by multiple factors including weather conditions, occupancy density, equipment usage, ven-
tilation quality, and human activities. Similarly, the number of people present inside a room
directly affects heat generation and cooling requirements. Conventional fan systems are
unable to respond automatically to these fluctuations and therefore fail to provide optimal
environmental conditions.
The proposed system addresses these challenges by continuously monitoring both oc-
cupancy count and room temperature. As illustrated in Figure 1.1, occupancy information
obtained from the IR sensors and temperature data collected from the DHT11 sensor are pro-
cessed by the ESP32 controller to determine the most appropriate cooling level. This intelli-
gent decision-making capability allows the fan to operate according to actual environmental
requirements rather than predefined manual settings. Consequently, energy consumption is
reduced while user comfort is improved.[8]
The necessity of intelligent adaptive fan controllers is further strengthened by the rapid
advancement of IoT technologies and smart building concepts. Modern infrastructure in-
creasingly demands systems capable of real-time monitoring, automated control, remote
accessibility, and efficient energy management. IoT-enabled environmental control systems
4
provide users with the ability to monitor and manage appliances remotely while receiv-
ing real-time updates regarding system performance. In the proposed system, the web-based
dashboard shown in Figure 1.1 enables users to observe occupancy count, temperature values,
fan speed, and operating mode through a browser interface, thereby enhancing accessibility
and convenience.
Furthermore, educational institutions, corporate offices, healthcare facilities, libraries,
laboratories, and commercial buildings often contain multiple rooms and ventilation systems
that require continuous monitoring. Manual management of these systems can be time-
consuming, inefficient, and prone to human error. Intelligent adaptive fan controllers reduce
the dependency on manual operation by automating the entire cooling management process.
This not only improves operational efficiency but also supports large-scale implementation
of smart environmental management systems.
From an environmental perspective, reducing electricity consumption directly contributes
to lowering carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development. Energy-efficient au-
tomation systems are increasingly recognized as important tools for achieving environmental
conservation objectives. By ensuring that cooling devices operate only when required and
at appropriate performance levels, intelligent adaptive fan controllers help minimize energy
wastage while maintaining comfortable indoor conditions.[1][3]
The proposed system also aligns with the vision of Industry 4.0 and smart infrastructure
development. Industry 4.0 emphasizes the integration of automation, real-time monitoring,
wireless communication, and intelligent decision-making technologies into modern engineer-
ing systems. Similarly, smart building concepts focus on creating environments capable of
automatically responding to changing user requirements and environmental conditions. The
proposed Intelligent Adaptive Fan Controller incorporates these principles by combining
sensing technologies, embedded processing, wireless communication, and automated control
mechanisms within a single platform.
Therefore, the development of the proposed Intelligent Adaptive Fan Controller is both
technically relevant and practically necessary. By integrating occupancy monitoring, tem-
perature sensing, PWM-based fan speed regulation, LCD monitoring, web dashboard com-
munication, and alert mechanisms into a single platform, the system provides an effective
solution for modern environmental control challenges. The architecture presented in Fig-
ure 1.1 demonstrates a practical implementation of smart automation technology capable
of improving energy efficiency, enhancing user comfort, supporting remote monitoring, and
contributing toward the development of intelligent and sustainable indoor environments.[3][5]

Chapter 2
Literature Survey
The literature survey is an essential phase of any research and development project as it
provides a detailed understanding of the existing technologies, methodologies, and research
contributions related to the proposed work. It helps researchers identify the strengths, limita-
tions, challenges, and opportunities associated with previously developed systems. Through
a comprehensive review of published research papers, technical articles, journals, conference
proceedings, and existing automation solutions, it becomes possible to establish a strong
theoretical and technical foundation for the development of the proposed system.
In recent years, environmental monitoring and automation technologies have gained sig-
nificant attention due to the increasing demand for energy conservation, intelligent control
systems, and sustainable infrastructure development. The rapid growth of embedded sys-
tems, wireless communication technologies, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications has
enabled the development of smart environmental control systems capable of performing au-
tomatic monitoring, decision making, and remote operation. Researchers around the world
have focused on developing intelligent solutions that can improve energy efficiency, reduce
human effort, enhance user comfort, and optimize the utilization of electrical resources.
Traditional environmental control systems generally rely on manual operation and lack the
capability to respond dynamically to changing environmental conditions. Such systems often
result in excessive energy consumption, inefficient resource utilization, and increased opera-
tional costs. To overcome these challenges, researchers have proposed numerous automation
techniques involving temperature monitoring, occupancy detection, wireless communication,
cloud connectivity, smart sensing technologies, and intelligent control algorithms. These de-
velopments have led to the emergence of modern smart environmental automation systems
capable of improving both operational efficiency and user convenience.[4][5]
The proposed project focuses on the development of an IoT-based intelligent fan au-
tomation system that combines occupancy monitoring, temperature sensing, PWM-based
fan speed regulation, web-based monitoring, LCD display visualization, and alert genera-
tion within a single integrated platform. Since the proposed system incorporates multiple
technologies, it is important to study the existing research work related to environmental
automation, occupancy detection systems, IoT-based monitoring platforms, wireless com-
munication technologies, smart control algorithms, and fan speed regulation techniques.
This chapter presents a comprehensive review of previously developed environmental au-
tomation systems and related technologies. It discusses conventional fan control mechanisms,
temperature-based environmental monitoring systems, occupancy detection techniques, IoT-
enabled automation platforms, ESP32-based smart monitoring systems, PWM fan control
methodologies, and modern environmental management solutions. The chapter also high-
lights the limitations of existing systems and identifies the research gap that motivates the
development of the proposed solution. The detailed analysis presented in this chapter pro-
vides valuable insights into current technological advancements and establishes the technical
basis for the design and implementation of the proposed system.
6
The literature reviewed in this chapter demonstrates the evolution of environmental au-
tomation systems from conventional manually operated devices to intelligent IoT-enabled
platforms capable of real-time monitoring, automated control, and remote accessibility. The
survey also emphasizes the importance of integrating multiple environmental parameters and
control mechanisms into a unified architecture to achieve higher levels of efficiency, automa-
tion, reliability, and user comfort. Furthermore, the analysis of previous research works helps
justify the selection of hardware components, communication methods, sensing technologies,
and control strategies adopted in the proposed project.
The remainder of this chapter is organized into three major sections. The first section
discusses smart environmental automation systems and fan control techniques developed by
researchers for improving energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The second section focuses
on IoT-based monitoring technologies, wireless communication platforms, smart controllers,
and user interaction mechanisms used in modern automation systems. The final section
identifies the limitations of existing approaches, discusses the research gap, and highlights
the need for the proposed intelligent environmental control system. The findings obtained
from this literature survey serve as a foundation for the system design, implementation
methodology, experimental evaluation, and performance analysis presented in the subsequent
chapters of this report.[9][11]
2.1 Smart Environmental Automation and Fan Control Systems
The increasing demand for energy-efficient systems has encouraged researchers to develop
intelligent environmental automation solutions capable of optimizing appliance operation
according to surrounding conditions. Conventional fan control systems generally operate us-
ing manual switches and speed regulators. In such systems, users are required to adjust fan
speed manually according to room temperature and occupancy conditions. However, in prac-
tical situations, users often forget to switch OFF fans or adjust speed settings appropriately,
resulting in unnecessary electricity consumption and increased operational costs. Several
researchers have proposed temperature-based fan automation systems to address these lim-
itations. These systems use temperature sensors to continuously monitor environmental
conditions and regulate fan operation automatically.
Temperature sensing devices such as LM35, DHT11, DHT22, DS18B20, thermistors,
and digital temperature sensors are commonly used for environmental monitoring appli-
cations. The sensor readings are processed by a microcontroller, which determines the re-
quired cooling level and adjusts fan speed accordingly. Research studies have demonstrated
that temperature-based automation systems significantly improve user comfort and energy
efficiency compared to conventional manually operated systems. When room temperature
exceeds a predefined threshold value, the controller automatically increases fan speed to
provide adequate airflow. Similarly, when temperature decreases, fan speed is reduced to
conserve electrical energy. Such automation mechanisms eliminate the need for continuous
human intervention and improve environmental management.[2]
Various controllers including Arduino Uno, PIC microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, NodeMCU
ESP8266, and ESP32 have been used in fan automation projects. Among these platforms,
ESP32 has gained considerable popularity due to its integrated Wi-Fi capability, higher pro-
cessing speed, low power consumption, and suitability for IoT applications. Researchers have
7
utilized ESP32 to develop smart environmental monitoring systems capable of performing
both local control and wireless communication simultaneously.[5]
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) has emerged as one of the most effective techniques
for fan speed regulation. PWM control allows smooth variation of fan speed by controlling
the duty cycle of the signal supplied to the motor. Unlike conventional voltage regulation
techniques, PWM minimizes power loss, improves efficiency, reduces heat generation, and
provides accurate speed control. Due to these advantages, PWM-based fan control has
become a standard approach in modern automation systems.
Although temperature-based automation improves cooling efficiency, researchers observed
that environmental conditions alone cannot accurately represent cooling requirements. In
indoor environments such as classrooms, offices, conference halls, and libraries, cooling re-
quirements are also influenced by the number of people present in the room. Therefore,
several studies have emphasized the importance of integrating occupancy monitoring with
temperature-based control systems. Occupancy detection systems have become increasingly
popular in smart building automation. Different sensing technologies including PIR sensors,
ultrasonic sensors, RFID systems, Bluetooth tracking systems, camera-based monitoring sys-
tems, and infrared sensors have been used for occupancy monitoring applications. Among
these technologies, IR sensor-based systems are widely preferred because they offer simple
implementation, low cost, low power consumption, and reliable operation.
Researchers have implemented IR sensor-based people counting systems by placing sensors
at room entrances and exits. These systems continuously monitor human movement and
maintain an accurate count of people present inside the room. Occupancy information can
then be used to control electrical appliances automatically, thereby reducing energy wastage
and improving system intelligence. Several studies have demonstrated that occupancy-based
automation significantly improves energy conservation in educational institutions, offices,
shopping malls, and public infrastructures.[4]
2.2 IoT-Based Monitoring and Intelligent Control Technologies
The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has revolutionized environmental
monitoring and automation systems. IoT enables electronic devices to communicate with
each other through wireless networks and exchange information in real time. This capa-
bility has significantly enhanced the functionality, accessibility, and intelligence of modern
automation systems. IoT-based environmental monitoring systems generally consist of sen-
sors, controllers, communication modules, cloud platforms, mobile applications, and web
dashboards.
Environmental data collected from sensors is processed by the controller and transmitted
wirelessly to users through internet-based platforms. This allows users to monitor environ-
mental conditions and control appliances remotely using smartphones, tablets, laptops, or
web applications. Researchers have developed numerous IoT-based automation systems for
smart homes, offices, hospitals, agricultural monitoring, industrial control, and educational
environments. These systems provide real-time monitoring of parameters such as tempera-
ture, humidity, occupancy count, appliance status, and energy consumption. The ability to
access environmental information remotely improves convenience and enables faster decision
making.
8
ESP8266 and ESP32 microcontrollers have become dominant platforms in IoT-based au-
tomation projects. Their integrated Wi-Fi functionality eliminates the need for additional
communication modules, thereby reducing hardware complexity and overall implementation
cost. The ESP32 additionally offers higher processing capability, Bluetooth support, multi-
ple GPIO interfaces, PWM functionality, and low-power operation, making it highly suitable
for advanced environmental monitoring systems.[5]
In addition to communication capability, researchers have emphasized the importance of
user interaction and data visualization. LCD displays, web dashboards, mobile applications,
and cloud platforms are commonly used to present environmental data to users. LCD dis-
plays provide local monitoring functionality, while web dashboards enable remote access and
control. Real-time visualization improves user awareness and allows effective management
of environmental conditions.
Many studies have also focused on integrating safety mechanisms into automation systems.
Alert modules such as buzzers, alarms, SMS notifications, email alerts, and mobile push
notifications are commonly used to inform users whenever environmental conditions exceed
predefined safety limits. These mechanisms improve system reliability and ensure timely
response during abnormal operating conditions.
Recent advancements have further expanded the capabilities of smart environmental sys-
tems through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), cloud
computing, and image processing technologies. AI-based systems can analyze environmental
patterns and optimize appliance operation dynamically according to user behavior and oc-
cupancy trends. Camera-based occupancy monitoring systems can provide highly accurate
people counting capabilities using image processing algorithms. However, these advanced so-
lutions often involve high implementation costs and increased computational requirements,
limiting their suitability for low-cost educational and academic projects.[6][8]
2.3 Research Gap and Need for the Proposed System
The review of existing literature indicates that significant progress has been made in the
development of environmental automation systems. However, several limitations continue
to exist in currently available solutions. Many existing systems focus only on tempera-
ture monitoring and fan control without considering room occupancy conditions. While
temperature-based systems improve environmental comfort, they may continue operating
fans unnecessarily when occupancy levels are low.
Similarly, occupancy-based systems primarily focus on human presence detection and ap-
pliance switching. These systems often lack environmental sensing capability and therefore
cannot adjust fan speed according to thermal comfort requirements. As a result, many ex-
isting systems fail to achieve optimal balance between energy conservation and user comfort.
Another important limitation identified in the literature is the lack of integrated monitoring
and control functionality.
Several automation systems provide local automation but do not offer real-time remote
monitoring capabilities. Other systems support remote monitoring but require complex cloud
infrastructure and additional hardware modules, increasing implementation cost and system
complexity.
9
The literature survey also reveals that only a limited number of systems integrate occu-
pancy counting, temperature sensing, PWM-based fan speed regulation, web-based moni-
toring, LCD visualization, and alert mechanisms into a single automation platform. Most
existing solutions focus on individual functionalities rather than providing a comprehensive
environmental management system.
Therefore, there is a clear need for an intelligent environmental automation system ca-
pable of combining occupancy detection, temperature monitoring, automatic fan speed reg-
ulation, real-time monitoring, remote accessibility, and user interaction within a single in-
tegrated architecture. The proposed system addresses these requirements by integrating IR
sensor-based occupancy monitoring, DHT11 temperature sensing, ESP32-based processing
and communication, PWM-controlled fan speed regulation, LCD monitoring, buzzer alerts,
and a browser-based dashboard into one unified platform.
The proposed solution aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce unnecessary power con-
sumption, enhance user comfort, provide real-time environmental monitoring, and demon-
strate the practical implementation of IoT-enabled automation technologies. By combining
multiple functionalities within a cost-effective architecture, the system contributes toward
the development of intelligent environmental control solutions suitable for classrooms, offices,
homes, libraries, laboratories, and other indoor environments.
2.4 Analysis of Reviewed Literature
The literature survey provides a comprehensive understanding of smart environmental
automation technologies, occupancy detection systems, temperature-based control mecha-
nisms, IoT communication platforms, PWM fan control techniques, monitoring interfaces,
and safety mechanisms. The review highlights the strengths and limitations of existing sys-
tems and identifies the need for a more integrated and intelligent solution. These findings
establish the technical foundation for the development of the proposed environmental mon-
itoring and automatic fan control system and justify the selection of hardware components,
communication methods, and control strategies used in the project.[1][3]
10
Chapter 3
11
The entire system continuously monitors the indoor environment, processes real-time data,
and controls the fan operation dynamically according to predefined conditions. In addition
to automatic control, the system also provides remote monitoring and manual operation
through a mobile dashboard interface. The proposed design ensures energy efficiency, smart
automation, and user convenience in modern indoor environments such as classrooms, of-
fices, hospitals, and smart homes.[3]
3.1.1 Hardware Components and Specifications
This section provides the technical details, function, and selection rationale for every
physical component used in the system.
• Control Unit:
The ESP32 continuously receives occupancy data from the IR sensors and temperature
data from the DHT11 sensor, processes the information in real time, and generates PWM
signals to regulate the fan speed automatically according to environmental conditions. Its
advanced hardware features and integrated Wi-Fi support make it highly suitable for smart
automation and IoT-based applications.
12
flexible for interfacing with different peripheral devices. The controller also contains sufficient
flash memory and SRAM for firmware execution and data handling operations. Due to its
compact size, low power operation, wireless communication capability, and high processing
performance, the ESP32 serves as an efficient and reliable control unit for the IntelliVent
Adaptive Fan Controller system.[5]
• Sensing Unit:
The sensing unit is responsible for collecting real-time environmental data required for
intelligent fan operation. In this system, two IR sensor modules and one DHT11 temperature
sensor are used for occupancy and temperature monitoring. The IR sensors operate on an
infrared reflection principle and are installed at the entrance of the room to detect people
entering and leaving the area. These sensors work with an operating voltage range of 3.3V
to 5V and provide digital output signals to the ESP32 controller. The detection sensitivity
of the IR sensors can also be adjusted according to environmental conditions for accurate
occupancy monitoring.
IR Sensor:
The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller uses two IR (Infrared) sensor modules for real-
time occupancy detection and crowd counting inside the room. These sensors are strategi-
cally placed at the entrance to detect the movement of people entering and leaving the area.
The IR sensors operate on the principle of infrared radiation, where infrared rays emitted
by the sensor are reflected back when an object or person passes in front of it. Based on this
detection mechanism, the sensors generate digital output signals that are sent to the ESP32
microcontroller for further processing.
The IR sensors operate within a voltage range of 3.3V to 5V and provide fast and reliable
response for motion detection applications. In the proposed system, two sensors are used
together so that the ESP32 can identify the direction of movement and accurately calculate
the occupancy count. When a person enters the room, the count is incremented, and when
a person exits, the count is decremented. This real-time occupancy monitoring helps the
system automatically regulate fan speed according to crowd density inside the room.
The sensors are compact, low-cost, energy-efficient, and easy to interface with embedded
systems such as the ESP32. The IR sensors play an important role in improving energy
efficiency, reducing unnecessary fan operation, and enhancing overall system automation in
the IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller.[7]
13
Fig 3.3 DHT11 Sensor
DHT11 Sensor:
The DHT11 sensor is used for measuring room temperature continuously. It operates
within a voltage range of 3.3V to 5V and can measure temperature values from 0°C to 50°C
with an accuracy of approximately ±2°C. The sensor provides digital output data directly
to the ESP32 controller, making the interfacing process simple and reliable. The sensing
unit therefore enables continuous environmental monitoring and supplies accurate real-time
data for intelligent fan control operations.[8]
• Actuation Unit:
The actuation unit is responsible for controlling the physical operation of the fan according
to the control signals generated by the ESP32 controller. This unit mainly consists of a
MOSFET driver circuit and a DC fan. The MOSFET driver circuit acts as an electronic
switching device that safely controls the fan operation without directly loading the ESP32
microcontroller.
MOSFET:
The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller uses a MOSFET driver circuit to control the
speed of the DC fan using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals generated by the ESP32
microcontroller. Since the ESP32 cannot directly drive high-current devices, the MOSFET
acts as an electronic switching device between the controller and the fan, ensuring safe and
efficient operation.
The ESP32 generates PWM signals with different duty cycles and sends them to the
gate terminal of the MOSFET. Based on the duty cycle of the PWM signal, the MOSFET
controls the amount of power supplied to the fan. When the duty cycle is low, the fan
14
rotates at low speed, and when the duty cycle increases, the fan speed also increases. This
method allows smooth and automatic fan speed control according to room occupancy and
temperature conditions. The MOSFET driver circuit provides fast switching, low power
loss, and efficient fan control, making the system more energy-efficient and reliable for smart
automation applications.
DC Fan:
The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller uses a DC fan as the main cooling device to
maintain a comfortable indoor environment. The fan operates on a 12V DC supply and is
connected to the ESP32 through a MOSFET driver circuit. The fan speed is automatically
controlled according to room occupancy and temperature conditions.
The ESP32 generates PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals and sends them to the
MOSFET driver circuit, which controls the power supplied to the fan. When the PWM
duty cycle is low, the fan rotates at low speed, and when the duty cycle increases, the
fan speed also increases. This automatic speed regulation helps reduce unnecessary power
consumption while providing efficient cooling and smart environmental control.[10]
• Power Supply and Support Components:
Details on the Regulated Power Supply (12V supply).Brief mention of passive compo-
nents like resistors and connecting wires (as listed in your original plan, but now grouped
logically).[2]
15
Battery:
a smart irrigation system that uses a DC pump and requires operation independent of
the main power grid, a rechargeable external battery is essential. The choice of battery type
and size is dictated by the voltage requirements of the pump and the need for sustained
operation (autonomy).
• User Interface:
The user interface section provides interaction and monitoring facilities for users both
locally and remotely. The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller uses a 16×2 LCD display, a
Piezo buzzer, and a Blynk-based mobile dashboard as the main user interface components.
LED Display:
The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller uses a 16×2 LCD display to provide real-time
monitoring of important system parameters. The LCD is used as a local user interface that
continuously displays information such as room occupancy count, temperature value. This
allows users to easily observe the current environmental conditions and system status directly
from the hardware setup.
The 16×2 LCD display consists of two rows and sixteen columns, allowing it to display
alphanumeric characters clearly and efficiently. In the proposed system, the LCD is interfaced
with the ESP32 microcontroller using an I2C communication interface, which reduces wiring
complexity and improves circuit organization. The display operates at 5V and provides
clear visibility with low power consumption, making it suitable for embedded and IoT-based
applications.
The ESP32 continuously updates the LCD with real-time sensor readings and fan control
information. Whenever the occupancy count or temperature changes, the displayed values
are automatically refreshed. The LCD therefore plays an important role in improving system
monitoring, user interaction, and overall operational convenience in the IntelliVent Adaptive
Fan Controller.[2]
16
Piezo buzzer:
The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller uses a Piezo buzzer as an alert and notification
device to indicate abnormal environmental conditions. The buzzer is mainly used to pro-
vide warning alerts whenever the room temperature exceeds the predefined threshold limit.
This helps users identify critical conditions immediately and improves the overall safety and
reliability of the system.
The Piezo buzzer operates within a voltage range of 3.3V to 5V and is directly interfaced
with the ESP32 microcontroller through a GPIO pin. When the temperature value detected
by the DHT11 sensor becomes higher than the set limit, the ESP32 sends a signal to activate
the buzzer. The buzzer then produces an audible sound alert to notify users about the high-
temperature condition.
The buzzer is compact, low-power consuming, and easy to interface with embedded sys-
tems. It provides quick audio indication without requiring continuous user monitoring of the
display or dashboard.[11]
3.1.2 Software and Control Logic (Firmware)
This section focuses on the software and control logic responsible for the intelligent op-
eration of the IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller. The firmware controls occupancy moni-
toring, temperature sensing, fan speed regulation, LCD updates, dashboard communication,
and alert generation. The system continuously monitors room conditions and automatically
adjusts the fan speed according to predefined environmental parameters.
• Development Environment and Languages: The firmware is developed using the
Arduino IDE and programmed in Embedded C/C++ language. The Arduino IDE is
selected because of its simple interface, easy programming environment, and extensive
support for embedded and IoT applications. The software manages occupancy detec-
tion, temperature monitoring, PWM-based fan speed control, LCD interfacing, and
buzzer operation.
• Arduino IDE and C/C++: The firmware is written primarily in the C/C++ lan-
guage within the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE). This environ-
ment is chosen for its simplicity, extensive documentation, and vast community support,
making it ideal for embedded systems and prototyping.
• Necessary Libraries: The system uses the ESP32 microcontroller with built-in Wi-
Fi capability for wireless communication and dashboard hosting. The WiFi.h library
is used to connect the ESP32 to the local Wi-Fi network and create a web server
for the dashboard interface. The custom dashboard is accessed through the IP address
generated by the ESP32 Wi-Fi server, allowing real-time monitoring and control through
a browser.
Additionally, the DHT library is used for reading temperature data from the DHT11
sensor, while the Liquid Crystal I2C library is used for interfacing the 16×2 LCD
display. PWM functionality available in the ESP32 is used for automatic fan speed
control through the MOSFET driver circuit. These libraries ensure smooth, reliable,
and efficient operation of the IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller system.[3][1]
17
3.1.3 Workflow of IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller:
The IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller follows an intelligent control workflow based on
room occupancy and temperature conditions. The ESP32 continuously monitors data from
the IR sensors and DHT11 temperature sensor and automatically controls the fan speed
using PWM signals through the MOSFET driver circuit.
1. Read Sensor Data: The ESP32 reads the occupancy data from the IR sensors and
temperature values from the DHT11 sensor.
2. Compare Occupancy and Temperature Conditions: The controller compares the
room occupancy count and temperature with predefined threshold values stored in the
firmware.
3. Control Fan Speed: If the occupancy count or temperature increases, the ESP32
generates PWM signals with higher duty cycles to increase the fan speed through the
MOSFET driver circuit.
4. Maintain Low Speed or Turn OFF Fan: If the room occupancy and temperature
are low, the controller reduces the PWM duty cycle, causing the fan to operate at low
speed or remain OFF to save energy.
5. Update LCD and Web Dashboard: The real-time values of occupancy count, tem-
perature, and fan speed are continuously displayed on the 16×2 LCD display and up-
dated on the ESP32 web dashboard.
6. Activate Alert System: If the room temperature exceeds the predefined safety limit,
the ESP32 activates the Piezo buzzer to provide an audible warning alert.
7. Repeat Monitoring Cycle: The system continuously repeats the monitoring and
control process to ensure automatic environmental control and energy-efficient opera-
tion.[6]
3.1.4 Data Acquisition and Calibration:
The data acquisition system of the IntelliVent Adaptive Fan Controller is responsible
for continuously collecting real-time environmental data from the sensors for intelligent fan
control. The system mainly acquires occupancy data using two IR sensor modules and
temperature data using the DHT11 sensor. The ESP32 microcontroller continuously reads
these sensor values, processes the data, and uses it for automatic fan speed regulation and
monitoring operations.
The IR sensors are placed at the entrance of the room to detect people entering and leaving
the area. Based on the sequence of sensor activation, the ESP32 updates the occupancy count
in real time. Simultaneously, the DHT11 sensor continuously measures the room temperature
and sends digital temperature readings to the controller. The acquired sensor data is then
displayed on the 16×2 LCD display and updated on the ESP32 web dashboard for remote
monitoring.
Calibration is performed to improve the accuracy and reliability of the sensing system.
The sensitivity of the IR sensors is adjusted to avoid false triggering caused by ambient light
or unwanted reflections. Similarly, the DHT11 sensor readings are verified with standard
temperature measurements to ensure proper temperature monitoring.[7]

3.1.7 Interfacing Details (Pin Configuration)
The interfacing section describes the hardware connections between the ESP32 microcon-
troller and all peripheral devices used in the system. Proper pin configuration is important
for accurate sensor monitoring, fan speed control, LCD communication, and alert generation.
All components are connected to the GPIO pins of the ESP32 according to their required
communication protocols and operating conditions.
• IR Sensor Interfacing: Two IR sensor modules are used for occupancy detection at
the room entrance. The output pin of the first IR sensor, which detects people entering
the room, is connected to GPIO 12 of the ESP32. The output pin of the second IR
sensor, used for detecting people leaving the room, is connected to GPIO 14. Both
sensors are powered using the 3.3V supply from the ESP32, and their ground terminals
are connected to the common GND of the system. These sensors continuously send
digital signals to the ESP32 for real-time occupancy counting.
• DHT11 Temperature Sensor Interfacing: The DHT11 temperature sensor is
connected to the ESP32 for continuous room temperature monitoring. The DATA pin
of the DHT11 sensor is connected to GPIO 4 of the ESP32 for digital temperature
data transmission. The sensor is powered using the 3.3V output of the ESP32, while
the ground terminal is connected to the common GND line. The ESP32 continuously
reads the temperature values from this sensor and uses the data for automatic fan speed
control.
• 16×2 LCD Display Interfacing: A 16×2 LCD display with an I2C communication
module is used for displaying real-time system parameters such as occupancy count,
temperature, fan speed, and operating mode. The SDA (Serial Data) pin of the LCD
module is connected to GPIO 21 of the ESP32, while the SCL (Serial Clock) pin is
connected to GPIO 22. The LCD operates using a 5V power supply, and the ground
pin is connected to the system GND. The I2C interface reduces wiring complexity and
allows efficient communication between the LCD and the ESP32.
• MOSFET Driver and DC Fan Interfacing: The DC fan is controlled using a
MOSFET driver circuit through PWM signals generated by the ESP32. The Gate
terminal of the MOSFET is connected to GPIO 25 of the ESP32, which provides PWM
signals for fan speed control. The Drain terminal of the MOSFET is connected to the
negative terminal of the DC fan, while the Source terminal is connected to GND. The
positive terminal of the fan is connected to an external DC power supply to provide
sufficient operating current for the fan.
A protection diode is connected across the fan terminals to prevent reverse voltage
spikes generated due to the inductive nature of the fan motor. This diode protects
both the MOSFET driver circuit and the ESP32 from voltage damage during switching
operations.
• Piezo Buzzer Interfacing: A Piezo buzzer is interfaced with the ESP32 to provide
audible warning alerts during high-temperature conditions. The positive terminal of the
buzzer is connected to GPIO 26 of the ESP32, while the negative terminal is connected
to the common GND line. Whenever the temperature exceeds the predefined threshold
value, the ESP32 activates the buzzer to generate an audible alert indication.[3][4][7]
21
3.2 Working Principle:
The working principle of the system is based on automatic environmental monitoring and
intelligent fan speed control using occupancy and temperature conditions. The ESP32 mi-
crocontroller continuously collects data from the IR sensors and DHT11 temperature sensor,
processes the information, and controls the speed of the DC fan using PWM signals through
the MOSFET driver circuit. The system is also integrated with a web-based dashboard
hosted through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server, allowing real-time monitoring and remote control
through the generated IP address. The complete operation ensures smart automation, en-
ergy efficiency, and improved indoor comfort.[10]
3.2.1 Implementation Setup and Physical Validation
The implementation setup consists of connecting all hardware components such as IR
sensors, DHT11 temperature sensor, ESP32 microcontroller, MOSFET driver circuit, DC
fan, 16×2 LCD display, and Piezo buzzer according to the designed circuit configuration.
The IR sensors are placed at the room entrance for occupancy detection, while the DHT11
sensor is positioned to monitor room temperature accurately. The DC fan is connected
through the MOSFET driver circuit for PWM-based speed control, and the LCD display is
used for real-time parameter monitoring.
After completing the hardware setup, physical validation of the system is performed under
different environmental conditions. The IR sensors are tested for accurate entry and exit
detection, and the DHT11 sensor readings are verified for proper temperature monitoring.
The fan speed response is checked according to occupancy and temperature variations, while
the LCD display and buzzer operation are also validated. Additionally, the ESP32 Wi-Fi
dashboard is tested by accessing the generated IP address through a web browser to ensure
proper remote monitoring and control functionality.[3]
3.2.2 Automated Fan Control Cycle Execution
The automated fan control cycle begins when the ESP32 continuously reads occupancy
data from the IR sensors and temperature data from the DHT11 sensor. Based on the
sequence of the IR sensor signals, the system calculates the number of people present inside
the room. Simultaneously, the temperature sensor continuously updates the current room
temperature.
The ESP32 compares the occupancy count and temperature values with predefined thresh-
old conditions stored in the firmware. If the occupancy or temperature increases, the ESP32
generates PWM signals with higher duty cycles to increase the fan speed through the MOS-
FET driver circuit. When the occupancy count and temperature decrease, the PWM duty
cycle is reduced, causing the fan to operate at lower speed or remain OFF to save electrical
energy.
During the entire operation, real-time system parameters such as occupancy count, tem-
perature, fan speed, and operating mode are continuously displayed on the LCD display
and updated on the web dashboard. The automated control cycle continuously repeats,
ensuring intelligent and energy-efficient fan operation according to changing environmental
conditions.[3]
22
3.2.3 Remote Interaction and Safety Protocol
The system provides remote monitoring and control through a web-based dashboard
hosted by the ESP32 Wi-Fi server. Once the ESP32 connects to the local Wi-Fi network, it
generates an IP address that allows users to access the dashboard through any web browser
connected to the same network. Through this dashboard, users can monitor occupancy
count, temperature values, fan speed, and operating mode in real time.
The dashboard also allows users to manually control the fan operation using ON/OFF
buttons and a speed control slider. An automatic mode option is provided where the system
independently regulates the fan speed according to occupancy and temperature conditions.
This remote interaction feature improves system accessibility and user convenience.
For safety purposes, a Piezo buzzer is integrated into the system to provide audible
alerts whenever the room temperature exceeds the predefined threshold value. Additionally,
a protection diode is connected across the fan terminals to prevent reverse voltage spikes
generated by the DC fan motor during switching operations. These safety mechanisms
improve system reliability, hardware protection, and operational safety.[4]
3.3 Advantages
The proposed smart fan automation system provides several advantages in terms of energy
conservation, intelligent automation, user comfort, remote monitoring, and system reliabil-
ity. By integrating occupancy detection, temperature monitoring, PWM-based fan speed
control, and wireless dashboard communication, the system creates an efficient and mod-
ern environmental control solution suitable for smart indoor applications. The automation
process reduces manual effort, improves energy management, and provides a comfortable
environment according to real-time room conditions.
3.3.1 Energy Efficiency and Power Saving
One of the most important advantages of the system is its ability to reduce unnecessary
power consumption through intelligent fan speed regulation. Traditional fan systems gen-
erally operate continuously at fixed speed even when cooling is not required, resulting in
excessive electricity consumption. In this system, the fan operation is automatically ad-
justed according to occupancy count and room temperature conditions, which helps reduce
energy wastage significantly.
• Automatic Power Optimization: The system continuously monitors room occu-
pancy using IR sensors and room temperature using the DHT11 sensor. When the
occupancy count is low or the room temperature is within a normal range, the ESP32
automatically reduces the fan speed or turns OFF the fan completely. This avoids
unnecessary operation of the fan and helps optimize power usage efficiently.
• PWM-Based Speed Regulation: The fan speed is controlled using PWM (Pulse
Width Modulation) signals generated by the ESP32 through the MOSFET driver cir-
cuit. Instead of operating the fan continuously at maximum speed, the PWM control
mechanism adjusts the fan speed gradually according to cooling requirements. This
reduces power consumption and increases the efficiency of the cooling system.
• Reduced Electricity Consumption: Since the system provides cooling only when re-
quired, the overall electricity consumption is reduced compared to traditional manually
23
controlled fan systems. This makes the system suitable for energy-saving applications
in classrooms, offices, hospitals, auditoriums, and smart homes.[6]
3.3.2 Intelligent Smart Automation
The system provides intelligent automation by continuously monitoring environmental
conditions and automatically controlling fan operation without requiring human intervention.
This improves convenience, operational efficiency, and system intelligence.
• Automatic Occupancy Detection: Two IR sensor modules are placed at the en-
trance to detect people entering and leaving the room. Based on the sequence of sensor
activation, the ESP32 calculates the occupancy count automatically. This real-time
crowd counting mechanism helps the system understand room usage conditions accu-
rately.
• Real-Time Automatic Decision Making : The ESP32 processes occupancy and
temperature data simultaneously and automatically adjusts the fan speed according to
predefined environmental conditions. The entire operation is performed automatically
without requiring continuous user monitoring or manual adjustment.
• Automatic Temperature Monitoring: The DHT11 temperature sensor continu-
ously measures room temperature and sends real-time temperature data to the ESP32
controller. The controller continuously analyzes the temperature conditions and uses
the information for intelligent fan speed regulation.[2]
3.3.3 Improved Indoor Comfort and Environmental Control
The system helps maintain a comfortable indoor environment by automatically control-
ling the cooling conditions according to room occupancy and temperature variations. This
improves user comfort and provides better ventilation management.
• Dynamic Fan Speed Adjustment: The fan speed increases automatically when
the room occupancy increases or when the room temperature becomes high. Similarly,
when the occupancy count decreases or the temperature becomes lower, the fan speed is
reduced automatically. This dynamic speed adjustment ensures balanced cooling inside
the room.
• Continuous Environmental Monitoring: The system continuously monitors room
conditions in real time and responds immediately to environmental changes. This en-
sures stable and comfortable indoor conditions throughout the operation.
• Better User Experience : Since the cooling system automatically adjusts according
to environmental conditions, users do not need to manually change fan speed repeatedly.
This improves convenience and creates a smarter indoor environment.[3]
3.3.4 IoT-Based Remote Monitoring and Control
The system includes a web-based dashboard hosted through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server,
allowing users to monitor and control the system remotely through the IP address gener-
ated by the ESP32. This provides advanced IoT-based remote accessibility and real-time
interaction.
• Real-Time Dashboard Monitoring: The dashboard continuously displays occu-
pancy count, room temperature, fan speed, and operating mode in real time. Users can
monitor all important system parameters remotely through a web browser.
24
• Remote Fan Control: The dashboard provides ON/OFF control buttons and a fan
speed control slider that allows users to manually control the fan operation remotely.
Users can also switch between automatic and manual operating modes according to
their requirements.
• No External Cloud Requirement: The dashboard is hosted directly by the ESP32
Wi-Fi server, eliminating the need for third-party cloud platforms or mobile applica-
tions. This makes the system more secure, reliable, and cost-effective.
• Easy Browser Accessibility: Users can access the dashboard using any device con-
nected to the same Wi-Fi network simply by entering the IP address generated by the
ESP32 in a web browser.[5]
3.3.5 User-Friendly Interface and Monitoring
The system provides both local and remote monitoring interfaces to improve usability
and operational convenience for users.
• LCD-Based Real-Time Display: A 16×2 LCD display continuously shows impor-
tant system information such as occupancy count, temperature values, fan speed, and
operating mode. This allows users to directly monitor system conditions from the hard-
ware setup.
• Simple Web Dashboard Interface: The dashboard is designed with a clean and
user-friendly graphical interface that makes system monitoring and control easy even
for non-technical users.
• Easy Interaction and Operation: The combination of automatic control, LCD
monitoring, and remote dashboard access makes the entire system simple and convenient
to operate.[3]
3.3.6 Safety, Reliability, and Hardware Protection
The system includes several safety and protection mechanisms that improve operational
reliability and protect hardware components from electrical damage.
• High Temperature Alert System: A Piezo buzzer is integrated into the system
to provide audible warning alerts whenever the room temperature exceeds the prede-
fined threshold value. This allows users to quickly identify abnormal environmental
conditions.
• MOSFET and Circuit Protection: A protection diode is connected across the DC
fan terminals to prevent reverse voltage spikes generated by the inductive fan motor
during switching operations. This protects the MOSFET driver circuit and ESP32 from
electrical damage.
• Stable System Operation: The ESP32 continuously monitors sensor readings and
performs stable real-time processing, ensuring reliable system operation under different
environmental conditions.
3.3.7 Low-Cost, Flexible, and Scalable Design
The proposed system is developed using low-cost and easily available electronic compo-
nents, making it economical and suitable for practical implementation in different indoor
applications.
25
• Economical Hardware Components: Components such as the ESP32, IR sensors,
DHT11 sensor, MOSFET driver circuit, and LCD display are affordable and readily
available, reducing the overall system cost.
• Easy Future Expansion: The system architecture is flexible and can be expanded
easily by integrating additional sensors, advanced monitoring systems, or smart home
automation features in the future.
• Suitable for Multiple Applications: The system can be implemented in class-
rooms, offices, hospitals, smart buildings, auditoriums, laboratories, and residential
environments where intelligent environmental monitoring and energy-efficient cooling
are required.
3.3.8 Reduced Human Effort and Maintenance
The automated operation of the system reduces the need for continuous manual fan control
and environmental monitoring.
• Fully Automatic Operation: The system automatically monitors occupancy and
temperature conditions and adjusts the fan speed without requiring human intervention.
• Reduced Manual Monitoring: Users do not need to continuously check room con-
ditions or manually regulate the fan speed, reducing operational effort.
• Reliable Long-Term Performance: The use of embedded automation and digital
sensing improves the overall reliability and maintenance efficiency of the system over
long-term operation.[1]
3.4 Limitations
Although the proposed smart fan automation system provides intelligent environmental
monitoring, automatic fan control, and energy-efficient operation, the system still has certain
limitations related to sensor performance, network dependency, scalability, environmental
conditions, and hardware constraints. These limitations may affect the overall performance,
accuracy, and reliability of the system under different operating conditions. Understanding
these limitations is important for future improvement and enhancement of the system.
3.4.1. Dependence on Wi-Fi Connectivity
The remote monitoring and dashboard control features of the system are completely
dependent on Wi-Fi connectivity provided by the ESP32 microcontroller. The dashboard is
hosted through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server and can only be accessed by devices connected to
the same local Wi-Fi network. Remote internet-based access is not available in the current
implementation.
If the Wi-Fi connection becomes unstable or disconnected, the remote monitoring and
control features may stop functioning temporarily. Additionally, the dashboard depends
on the IP address generated by the ESP32, and the IP address may change depending
on router configuration or network settings. Weak Wi-Fi signal strength may also reduce
communication reliability between the ESP32 and connected devices.[2]
3.4.2. Limited Scalability for Large Environments
The current implementation is mainly suitable for small and medium indoor environments
such as classrooms, offices, libraries, and residential rooms. For large buildings, auditoriums,
26
shopping complexes, or industrial environments, the current occupancy detection and cool-
ing mechanism may not provide sufficient monitoring coverage or efficient environmental
control. Large-scale implementation would require additional occupancy sensors, multiple
temperature monitoring units, and several fan control systems. This increases hardware
complexity, wiring difficulty, and overall system cost. As the system expands, additional
controllers and communication mechanisms may also be required for proper synchronization
and centralized monitoring.
3.4.3. Power Supply and Hardware Dependency
The entire operation of the system depends on continuous electrical power and stable
hardware performance. During power outages or voltage fluctuations, the ESP32 controller,
sensors, dashboard, LCD display, and fan control mechanism stop functioning completely.
The DC fan also requires an external power supply for proper operation. Improper voltage
regulation or unstable power sources may affect fan speed performance and overall system
stability. Continuous operation of the MOSFET driver circuit and DC fan may additionally
generate heat, which can reduce hardware efficiency and affect long-term reliability.
3.4.4. Requirement of Manual Calibration and Maintenance
The proposed system requires periodic calibration and maintenance for reliable long-term
operation. The IR sensors require manual sensitivity adjustment to reduce false triggering
and improve occupancy detection accuracy. Similarly, the DHT11 sensor readings may
require calibration with standard measuring devices for accurate temperature monitoring.
Dust accumulation near sensors, wiring connections, and hardware components may re-
duce system performance over time. Therefore, regular cleaning and maintenance are nec-
essary to ensure stable and reliable system operation.[3]
3.4.5. Limited Intelligence and Data Analysis Capability
The current automation system operates mainly using predefined threshold conditions
and simple control logic programmed into the ESP32 microcontroller. The system does
not include artificial intelligence or machine learning algorithms for adaptive environmental
control.
Fan speed regulation depends on fixed occupancy and temperature values, which may
not dynamically adapt to every environmental situation. The system also does not store
long-term occupancy or temperature data for future analysis, reporting, or energy optimiza-
tion studies. Additionally, the current implementation cannot predict future environmental
conditions or optimize cooling patterns based on user behavior.
3.4.6. Limited Industrial and Commercial Application Capability
The proposed system is mainly designed for educational, residential, and small-scale au-
tomation purposes. The current fan control circuit may not support high-power industrial
ventilation systems without advanced motor drivers and protection mechanisms.
For large commercial or industrial applications, more robust sensors, industrial-grade con-
trollers, and advanced communication systems would be required to ensure stable operation
under harsh environmental conditions. The current implementation also controls only a
single fan unit, and additional hardware and software modifications would be required for
centralized control of multiple cooling systems.[4]
27
3.5 Applications
The proposed smart fan automation system can be implemented in various domains where
intelligent environmental monitoring, automatic cooling control, energy conservation, and
user comfort are important. By integrating occupancy detection, temperature monitoring,
PWM-based fan control, and IoT-based remote monitoring, the system provides a flexible
and efficient solution for modern smart environments. The system can be used in residen-
tial, educational, commercial, healthcare, industrial, and smart city applications to improve
energy efficiency and environmental management.
3.5.1. Residential and Smart Home Applications
The system can be widely used in homes and residential buildings for intelligent environ-
mental control and energy-efficient cooling management. In many homes, fans remain ON
unnecessarily even when rooms are empty, resulting in excessive power consumption. The
occupancy-based monitoring mechanism automatically detects whether people are present
inside the room and controls the fan operation accordingly.
The system continuously monitors room temperature and occupancy conditions and ad-
justs the fan speed automatically to maintain proper indoor comfort. This reduces manual
effort and improves user convenience. The web-based dashboard also allows homeowners
to monitor and control the fan remotely through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server. The system can
further be integrated with future smart home automation systems and IoT-based residential
networks for centralized environmental control.[2]
3.5.2. Educational Institutions and Classrooms
Educational environments such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, seminar halls, and
computer labs require proper ventilation and cooling for maintaining a comfortable learning
environment. The proposed system can automatically regulate fan speed according to the
number of students present inside the classroom and room temperature conditions.
In many educational institutions, fans remain operational even after classrooms become
empty, resulting in unnecessary electricity consumption. The occupancy detection mecha-
nism helps reduce energy wastage by automatically turning OFF or reducing the fan speed
when the room is unoccupied. The system also helps maintain proper temperature condi-
tions, improving student concentration and learning comfort.
The LCD display and dashboard provide real-time monitoring of environmental condi-
tions, while the automatic operation reduces the need for continuous manual fan control by
teachers or staff members.
5.3.3. Offices and Commercial Buildings
The system can be effectively implemented in offices, conference rooms, meeting halls,
shopping complexes, and commercial buildings where energy-efficient cooling and environ-
mental monitoring are essential. Office environments usually contain multiple employees
working continuously, making proper ventilation and temperature control important for
maintaining productivity and comfort.
The occupancy detection mechanism automatically adjusts fan speed according to em-
ployee presence and room conditions, improving cooling efficiency and reducing unnecessary
electricity consumption. During low occupancy conditions, the fan speed is automatically
reduced to conserve energy. The web dashboard allows remotely & manually monitoring.[1]
28
The system can also help commercial buildings reduce operational electricity costs by
optimizing cooling system performance according to actual room usage conditions.
3.5.4. Hospitals and Healthcare Centers
Hospitals, clinics, consultation rooms, and healthcare facilities require continuous environ-
mental monitoring and stable indoor conditions for patient comfort and medical operations.
The proposed system can automatically maintain proper ventilation and cooling conditions
inside patient rooms, waiting areas, and consultation cabins.
The automatic fan speed regulation mechanism helps improve patient comfort by adjust-
ing cooling conditions according to room occupancy and temperature variations. The buzzer
alert system can notify staff members whenever room temperature exceeds the predefined
threshold value. This improves environmental safety and helps maintain stable conditions
inside healthcare environments.
The automated operation also reduces the need for manual adjustment of cooling systems
by hospital staff, thereby improving operational efficiency and reducing energy wastage.
3.5.5. Auditoriums, Seminar Halls, and Conference Rooms
Large indoor gathering spaces such as auditoriums, seminar halls, conference rooms, and
event halls often experience continuously changing crowd density and temperature condi-
tions. The proposed system can automatically regulate fan speed according to the occupancy
count inside the hall.
When the crowd density increases, the system automatically increases the fan speed to
improve air circulation and maintain comfortable environmental conditions. Similarly, dur-
ing low occupancy periods, the fan speed is reduced to save electrical energy. This dynamic
cooling adjustment improves ventilation efficiency and provides better environmental man-
agement during meetings, events, and seminars.
The system also reduces manual supervision and provides automatic cooling management
for large indoor spaces.[1]
3.5.6. Libraries and Study Rooms
Libraries and study environments require silent and stable environmental conditions for
effective reading and concentration. The proposed system can provide smooth and efficient
cooling control without sudden speed variations or excessive fan noise. The occupancy-based
control mechanism helps reduce unnecessary fan operation when study rooms are empty,
improving energy efficiency.
The system continuously maintains comfortable room temperature conditions suitable
for reading and studying. Since the fan speed is controlled using PWM signals, the cooling
process becomes smoother and quieter compared to traditional fan control methods. The
automatic operation also reduces human intervention and provides uninterrupted environ-
mental management in libraries and study centers.
3.5.7. Laboratories and Research Centers
Scientific laboratories, computer labs, and research centers require controlled environ-
mental conditions for stable equipment operation and user safety. The proposed system
continuously monitors room temperature and occupancy conditions and automatically con-
trols cooling according to environmental requirements.
29
The buzzer alert mechanism provides warning indications whenever the room tempera-
ture exceeds the predefined threshold value, helping prevent overheating conditions. This
improves safety and reliability in laboratory environments where electronic equipment and
instruments are sensitive to temperature variations.
The real-time monitoring dashboard also allows technical staff to monitor environmental
conditions remotely through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server.[2]
3.5.8. Industrial Waiting Areas and Small Workshops
The system can be used in small industrial waiting areas, workshops, maintenance rooms,
and employee rest areas where automatic ventilation and cooling are required. The occupancy-
based cooling mechanism helps maintain proper air circulation according to the number of
people present inside the area.
The automatic fan speed regulation reduces unnecessary electricity usage and minimizes
manual supervision in industrial environments. The use of low-cost hardware components
makes the system suitable for economical industrial cooling applications.
Additionally, the system can improve worker comfort and environmental conditions in
small industrial workspaces.
3.5.9. Smart Buildings and IoT-Based Automation Systems

applications where energy conservation and automated environmental management are im-
portant.
The system can be implemented in public waiting halls, railway stations, bus terminals,
government offices, public libraries, and community centers to provide intelligent cooling
management according to occupancy conditions. By reducing unnecessary electricity con-
sumption, the system supports sustainable energy usage and smart city development.
The IoT-based architecture also allows future integration with centralized monitoring
systems and advanced smart infrastructure technologies for large-scale automation applica-
tions.[3]

4.1 Results
The proposed smart fan automation system was successfully implemented and tested
under different environmental and occupancy conditions. The system demonstrated efficient
occupancy detection, accurate temperature monitoring, automatic fan speed regulation, and
reliable real-time monitoring through the web dashboard. The integration of the ESP32
microcontroller, IR sensors, DHT11 sensor, MOSFET driver circuit, LCD display, and web-
based dashboard resulted in a stable and intelligent environmental control system. The
following results were observed during the implementation and testing of the project.
4.1.1. Successful Real-Time Occupancy Detection and Crowd Monitoring
The proposed system successfully implemented real-time occupancy monitoring using two
IR sensor modules installed at the entrance of the room. During testing, the sensors accu-
rately detected people entering and leaving the room by monitoring the sequence of sensor
activation. The ESP32 microcontroller continuously processed these signals and maintained
an updated occupancy count in real time. The occupancy information was displayed si-
multaneously on the LCD display and the web dashboard, allowing users to monitor room
conditions continuously.
The occupancy-based monitoring mechanism helped the system automatically understand
room usage conditions and regulate fan speed according to the number of people present in-
side the room. The implementation demonstrated that the IR sensor-based crowd counting
mechanism can be effectively used for smart indoor automation and energy-efficient environ-
mental management applications.[7]
4.1.2. Stable and Continuous Temperature Monitoring Performance
The DHT11 temperature sensor successfully monitored room temperature continuously
the operation of the system. The sensor provided stable and reliable temperature readings
to the ESP32 controller under normal indoor environmental conditions. The temperature
values were updated continuously on the LCD display as well as on the web dashboard hosted
through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server.
The real-time temperature monitoring capability allowed the system to respond auto-
matically to environmental changes and regulate fan speed accordingly. During testing,
the sensor successfully detected temperature variations and helped maintain proper indoor
cooling conditions. The temperature monitoring mechanism therefore proved effective for
automatic environmental control and smart automation applications.
4.1.3. Automatic Fan Speed Control Using PWM Technique
One of the major achievements of the project was the successful implementation of PWM-
based automatic fan speed regulation. The ESP32 generated PWM signals with varying duty
cycles according to occupancy count and room temperature conditions. These PWM signals
were supplied to the MOSFET driver circuit, which controlled the speed of the DC fan
smoothly and efficiently.[9]
31
When the room occupancy or temperature increased, the PWM duty cycle increased auto-
matically, resulting in higher fan speed and improved cooling. Similarly, when the occupancy
count or room temperature decreased, the system reduced the PWM duty cycle, causing the
fan speed to decrease automatically. This intelligent fan speed control mechanism helped
maintain comfortable indoor conditions while reducing unnecessary power consumption.
The PWM-based control also provided smoother fan operation compared to traditional
ON/OFF control systems, improving both cooling efficiency and system reliability.
4.1.4. Successful Operation of the ESP32 Web Dashboard
The web-based dashboard hosted through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server operated successfully
for real-time monitoring and remote control applications. Once the ESP32 connected to the
local Wi-Fi network, it generated an IP address that allowed users to access the dashboard
through any web browser connected to the same network.
The dashboard continuously displayed important environmental and operational param-
eters such as occupancy count, room temperature, fan speed, and operating mode in real
time. During testing, users were able to monitor all system parameters remotely without
requiring external IoT cloud platforms or mobile applications.
The dashboard also provided manual fan control features such as ON/OFF control but-
tons, automatic mode selection, and speed adjustment sliders. Users could switch between
automatic and manual operating modes easily according to their requirements. The suc-
cessful implementation of the ESP32 Wi-Fi dashboard demonstrated the effectiveness of
browser-based IoT monitoring and control systems for smart environmental automation ap-
plications.[4]
4.1.5. Effective Real-Time LCD Display Monitoring
The 16×2 LCD display integrated into the system functioned successfully and continu-
ously displayed important system parameters during operation. The LCD showed occupancy
count, room temperature, fan speed, and operating mode in real time, allowing users to mon-
itor the environmental conditions directly from the hardware setup. The I2C communication
interface between the ESP32 and LCD display reduced wiring complexity and provided stable
data transmission throughout the operation of the system.
The LCD display improved local monitoring capability and made the system more user-
friendly and interactive. During testing, the LCD continuously refreshed updated values
without major delay or communication issues, demonstrating stable and reliable display
performance.
4.1.6. Successful Alert and Safety Mechanism Performance
The Piezo buzzer integrated into the system successfully operated as an audible warning
and alert mechanism during high-temperature conditions. Whenever the room temperature
exceeded the predefined threshold value stored in the firmware, the ESP32 automatically
activated the buzzer to notify users about the abnormal environmental condition.
This alert mechanism improved system safety and user awareness by providing imme-
diate audible indications without requiring continuous dashboard monitoring. The buzzer
operation was tested multiple times under different temperature conditions and functioned
reliably throughout the implementation process.[6]
32
Additionally, the protection diode connected across the DC fan terminals successfully
prevented reverse voltage spikes generated by the inductive fan motor during switching
operations. This improved the safety and reliability of the MOSFET driver circuit and
protected the ESP32 from electrical damage.
4.1.7. Significant Reduction in Unnecessary Power Consumption
The proposed system successfully demonstrated energy-efficient fan operation through
occupancy and temperature-based automatic control. Unlike traditional fan systems that
operate continuously at fixed speed, the proposed system controlled the fan only according
to actual environmental requirements.
When room occupancy and temperature were low, the fan speed automatically reduced
or remained OFF, minimizing unnecessary electricity consumption. During high occupancy
and high-temperature conditions, the fan speed increased automatically to provide sufficient
cooling. This intelligent environmental control mechanism helped optimize power usage
efficiently.
The results showed that the automatic fan control system can significantly improve en-
ergy conservation and reduce electricity wastage in indoor environments such as classrooms,
offices, homes, and commercial spaces.[8]
4.1.8. Smooth Hardware Integration and Reliable System Performance
All hardware components including the ESP32 microcontroller, IR sensors, DHT11 tem-
perature sensor, MOSFET driver circuit, DC fan, 16×2 LCD display, and Piezo buzzer were
successfully integrated into a single automated system. The ESP32 continuously processed
sensor data, controlled the fan operation, updated the dashboard, managed LCD commu-
nication, and activated safety alerts without major hardware or software synchronization
problems.
The complete system operated continuously under different environmental conditions
without significant communication failure, processing delay, or operational instability. The
hardware interfacing and firmware implementation proved stable and reliable for real-time
IoT-based smart automation applications.
The successful integration of sensing, control, communication, display, and alert mecha-
nisms demonstrated the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed system for intelligent
environmental monitoring and automatic fan control applications.
4.1.9. Improved User Convenience and Automation Capability
The project successfully reduced manual effort required for fan operation and environmen-
tal monitoring through intelligent automation. Users did not need to manually adjust fan
speed continuously according to room conditions because the system automatically regulated
cooling according to occupancy and temperature variations. The combination of automatic
fan control, LCD monitoring, and browser-based dashboard access improved overall user
convenience and system accessibility.
The dashboard interface provided easy control and monitoring features, making the sys-
tem simple to operate even for non-technical users. The project therefore demonstrated an
efficient smart automation solution capable of improving environmental comfort, reducing
human effort, and enhancing overall operational efficiency in indoor environments.[10]
33
4.1.10. Successful Implementation of IoT-Based Smart Environmental Control
The overall implementation successfully demonstrated an IoT-based smart environmental
automation system using embedded system technology and wireless communication. The
project combined occupancy monitoring, temperature sensing, PWM-based fan speed regu-
lation, LCD display monitoring, web-based dashboard control, and safety alert mechanisms
into a single integrated system.
The ESP32 Wi-Fi server successfully enabled browser-based remote monitoring and con-
trol through the generated IP address, eliminating the need for third-party cloud platforms.
The project proved that low-cost embedded hardware and IoT technologies can be effectively
used for intelligent environmental management and energy-efficient automation applications.
The final results confirmed that the proposed system is reliable, practical, cost-effective, and
suitable for implementation in smart homes, classrooms, offices, hospitals, libraries, and
other indoor environments requiring intelligent cooling and environmental control.

environmental monitoring and automatic fan speed control using occupancy and temperature
conditions. Although the system performs effectively for smart indoor automation applica-
tions, there are several possibilities for future improvements and technological enhancements.
By integrating advanced sensing technologies, artificial intelligence, cloud communication,
and smart automation techniques, the system can become more intelligent, accurate, scal-
able, and suitable for large-scale applications. The future scope of the project mainly focuses
on improving automation capability, increasing monitoring accuracy, expanding system con-
nectivity, and enhancing user interaction.
3.6.1. Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
One of the most important future improvements of the system is the integration of Arti-
ficial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The current system operates
mainly on predefined threshold conditions for occupancy count and room temperature. In
future implementations, AI algorithms can be integrated to make the system more intelli-
gent and adaptive. Machine learning models can continuously analyze occupancy patterns,
environmental changes, and user behavior to optimize fan speed automatically according to
real-time requirements. Instead of using fixed fan speed conditions, the system can learn
from previous environmental data and make predictive decisions for maintaining comfortable
indoor conditions. AI-based environmental control can also help reduce unnecessary power
consumption by identifying occupancy trends and optimizing cooling operation accordingly.
Future AI-based systems can additionally support predictive cooling mechanisms, where
the system adjusts fan speed before the room temperature rises significantly. This will
improve cooling efficiency, response time, and overall user comfort. Intelligent automation
using AI and machine learning can therefore make the system smarter, more efficient, and
highly adaptive to changing environmental conditions.[1]
3.6.2. Advanced Occupancy Detection and Monitoring Techniques
The current system uses IR sensor modules for occupancy detection, which are simple,
economical, and easy to interface. However, in future implementations, more advanced sens-
ing technologies can be integrated to improve occupancy monitoring accuracy and reliabil-
ity. Camera-based occupancy detection systems using computer vision and image processing
techniques can provide more accurate crowd monitoring and movement detection. Artifi-
cial intelligence-based human detection algorithms can also identify the number of people
present inside the room with higher accuracy compared to conventional IR sensors. These
advanced systems can reduce false triggering issues caused by environmental disturbances
such as ambient light, reflections, or simultaneous movement of multiple people.
Additionally, advanced sensors such as ultrasonic sensors, PIR motion sensors, radar-
based sensors, or thermal imaging systems can be integrated for better occupancy monitoring.
These technologies can improve the reliability and efficiency of the environmental automation
system in complex indoor environments.
37
3.6.3. Cloud-Based Monitoring and Remote Accessibility
Currently, the system uses a local web dashboard hosted through the ESP32 Wi-Fi server
and accessed through the generated IP address. In the future, cloud-based communication
and monitoring systems can be integrated to improve remote accessibility and data manage-
ment. Cloud integration will allow users to monitor and control the system from anywhere
through the internet instead of only within the local Wi-Fi network. Environmental data
such as room temperature, occupancy count, fan speed, and system performance can be
stored securely on cloud servers for long-term analysis and monitoring.
Future systems can also provide graphical analysis, energy consumption reports, and his-
torical environmental data visualization using cloud platforms. Cloud-based communication
will improve scalability, centralized monitoring capability, and remote system accessibility
for large-scale smart automation applications.[4]
3.6.4. Mobile Application Development
A dedicated mobile application can be developed in the future to provide a more advanced
and user-friendly interface for system monitoring and control. Although the current system
uses a browser-based dashboard, a mobile application can improve accessibility, interaction,
and user experience significantly.
The application can provide real-time monitoring of occupancy count, room temperature,
fan speed, and operating status directly through smartphones. Users can remotely control the
fan operation, switch between automatic and manual modes, and receive push notifications
during abnormal conditions such as excessive temperature or hardware failure.
Additional features such as graphical monitoring, voice control, and personalized environ-
mental settings can also be included in the mobile application. The integration of smartphone
applications will improve the portability, accessibility, and usability of the smart automation
system.
3.6.5. Smart Home and IoT Ecosystem Integration
The system can be further expanded by integrating it with modern smart home au-
tomation platforms and IoT ecosystems. Future implementations can allow the system to
communicate with other smart appliances such as lighting systems, air conditioners, smart
windows, and environmental sensors.
Voice assistant integration using platforms such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or
Apple Siri can allow users to control the fan system through voice commands. This will
improve convenience and create a fully automated smart indoor environment.
The system can also become part of centralized smart home networks where multiple
environmental devices are controlled from a single automation platform. Such integration
will improve smart energy management and support advanced IoT-based automation appli-
cations.[10]
3.6.6. Solar-Powered and Renewable Energy Operation
Future versions of the system can incorporate renewable energy technologies to improve
38
sustainability and reduce dependency on conventional electrical power sources. Solar panels
can be integrated to power the ESP32, sensors, and cooling system using renewable solar
energy. Battery backup systems can also be added to ensure uninterrupted operation during
power failures or voltage fluctuations.
This will improve system reliability and make the project suitable for energy-efficient
and eco-friendly smart automation applications. Renewable energy integration can further
contribute to green technology development and sustainable environmental management in
smart buildings and residential environments.
3.6.7. Multi-Room and Centralized Environmental Monitoring
The present implementation is mainly designed for single-room applications. However,
future systems can be expanded to support multi-room monitoring and centralized environ-
mental control for larger buildings and commercial spaces.
Additional occupancy sensors, temperature sensors, and fan control modules can be in-
stalled in multiple rooms and connected through a centralized monitoring system. A single
dashboard can then be used to monitor and control environmental conditions across the
entire building. Such centralized systems can be highly beneficial for offices, hospitals, edu-
cational institutions, shopping complexes, and smart commercial buildings where large-scale
environmental management is required.[6]
3.6.8. Advanced Safety and Protection Mechanisms

and buzzer alert system, future improvements can include more advanced safety mechanisms
for improved hardware reliability and operational security.
Future versions can use industrial-grade sensors, advanced motor drivers, and high-power
ventilation systems for controlling large industrial cooling units. The system can also be
integrated into factory automation systems and industrial IoT platforms for intelligent en-
vironmental monitoring and energy management.
Commercial buildings such as malls, office complexes, and smart infrastructures can ben-
efit from centralized fan control systems based on occupancy and temperature monitoring.
This can help reduce energy costs and improve large-scale environmental management.[8]
