What is Preposition?
A preposition is a word that links a noun, pronoun, or phrase to other words in a sentence.
It usually shows a relationship of place, time, direction, cause, manner, or possession.
Types of Prepositions
1. PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE - These prepositions indicate the location or position of something.
Common Prepositions of Place and Example sentences
o In (inside something) - She lives in a big house.
o On (on the surface of something) - The books are on the table.
o At (a specific point or place) - He is waiting at the bus stop.
o Under (below something) - The cat is under the chair.
o Over (above something but not touching) - The clock is over the door.
o Between (in the middle of two things) - Saras is at between her two friends.
o Behind (at the back of something) - The car is parked behind the building.
o Next to (beside something) - My house is next to the supermarket.
2. PREPOSITIONS OF TIME - These prepositions indicate time-related to relationships.
Common Prepositions of Time:
In (months, years, centuries, long periods) - We will meet in December.
On (specific days, dates, and special occasions) - The party is on Monday.
At (specific times and short moments) - I will be there at 5 PM.
Since (starting point of time) - He has been working here since 2010.
For (duration of time) - She studied for three hours.
By (before a deadline) - You must submit your assignment by Friday.
Until (up to a specific point in time) - They waited until midnight.
3. PREPOSITIONS OF DIRECTION OR MOVEMENT- These prepositions show the movement
from one place to another.
Common Prepositions of Direction:
To (movement toward a specific destination) - She went to the market.
Into (movement inside something) - He walked - into the room.
Onto (movement towards a surface) - The cat jumped on to the table.
From (starting point of movement) - He came from Canada.
Towards (in the direction of something) - The ball rolled towards the goal.
Out of (moving away from something)- She ran out of the house.
4. PREPOSITIONS OF MANNER, CAUSE, AND REASON- These prepositions show how,
why, or in what way something happens.
Common Prepositions of Manner, Cause, and Reason:
• By (means of something) - She traveled by car.
• With (instrument used)- He wrote the letter with a pen.
• About (concern or topic) -We are worried about the exam.
• Due to (reason for something) -The flight was delayed due to bad weather.
• Because of (cause of something) -She missed the bus because of the heavy traffic.
