Project2
Welcome! You are invited to review and analyze the scenario below and determine from the requests
what actions you are to take, using your knowledge of Project Management and your ability to analyze
and decide.
All that you need to perform the activities below can be found in the Simplilearn material and the
PMBOK® Guide - Fifth Edition, but if you need further clarity, please feel free to reach out to trainers for
guidance.
The times documented below are recommendations and should be suggestions to the level of detail
expected. You cannot assume you have enough information to do these assignments as in a real project,
but you should be able to provide enough information to show that you understand what is being
discussed, why it’s important, and what action you would take to control your Project.
The data provided is general, but specific. The data will provide hints as to what you need to consider. If
they don’t make sense, you have two options – use them anyway or ask for clarification. You may want
to revise numbers or add specific details. Yes, you can do this, much like you would do this on a project.
However, if you modify the scenario, it must be reasonable and realistic, and it must be wholly integrated
into the project. Remember – all aspects of projects must either support the project success and/or
minimize failure, and you will need to justify that to ensure a successful outcome.
Situation: You are appointed as a Project Manager for a Software Development company. The Project
Charter has already been developed by the Project Sponsor and you have received authority. Now, you
must develop the Project Management Plan. The predefined Project Scope is to develop a mobile app.
You are in the process of creating the WBS and the lifecycle, which includes phases such as
Requirements, Design, Development, Testing, Documentation, and Deployment. The work packages
include:
• Requirement documentation under Requirements phase
• High Level Document (HLD) and Low-Level Document (LLD) under Design phase
• Two modules: module1 and module 2, under Development phase
• Test Plan document under Documentation phase
• Test Execution under Testing phase
• Installer under Deployment phase
The activities under each of these work packages are given in the table below.

A. Create the Work Breakdown Structure and Network Diagram. —30 Minutes
From the information you’ve collected, build out the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). This will include
only the scope.
The next action is to create a network diagram – the schedule. The diagram will be to the work package
level, and the duration will be calculated from the activity durations. Each activity will last 2 days.
The activities in each of these phases will be carried out in series. Requirements is the starting phase.
Once this phase is completed, the Design phase should start. Next is the Development phase. The HLD
work package and then the LLD work package should be completed. Module 1 and Module 2 work
packages (Development phase work packages) will happen in parallel. Documentation Phase can start
after the Design phase is completed, but needs to finish before testing starts. Testing phase follows the
Development phase as well as Documentation. The Deployment phase begins after the completion of
the Testing phase.
The durations of each of these activities are two days.
B. Estimate the duration of the project. Calculate the critical path and also find the total float for all
the activities - 20 minutes
C. You monitor and control the project. At the end of the 26th day, only the Requirements and
High-Level Design are completed. Each activity is estimated to cost $100. The actual cost is
$1,200. Find the SV, CV, SPI, CPI, EAC based on the current CPI, and use them to calculate ETC
and VAC - 30 minutes
D. What is the observation from Earned Value Management (EVM) and what probable actions will
you take? - 10 minutes
Total duration is 75 Minutes.
