Part 1: Numerical Descriptive Statistics Using SPSS
To examine student anxiety prior to the midterm exam, data from 30 students were
analyzed in SPSS using the "Descriptives" function. The following values were calculated:
- Mean: 69.13
- Median: 70.00
- Standard Deviation: 17.47
- Variance: 305.36
Interpretation:
The average anxiety score was approximately 69, with a moderate amount of variability as
indicated by the standard deviation of 17.47. The median of 70 indicates a relatively
symmetrical distribution since it is close to the mean.
Part 2: Frequency Table (6 Classes) Using SPSS
A frequency table was generated using the "Visual Binning" function in SPSS to group
anxiety scores into 6 equal-width classes. The results are presented below:
Class Interval Frequency Relative Percent Cumulative Percent
40 - 52 6 20.0% 20.0%
53 - 65 6 20.0% 40.0%
66 - 78 8 26.7% 66.7%
79 - 91 6 20.0% 86.7%
92 - 104 4 13.3% 100.0%
Interpretation:
The most frequent scores fell in the 66-78 range, indicating many students had moderate
anxiety. There is a noticeable tail in the higher ranges, suggesting a few students
experienced severe anxiety.
Part 3: Histogram in SPSS
A histogram was constructed using the frequency table data in SPSS. The histogram showed
a roughly bell-shaped distribution, supporting the earlier findings of a symmetric,
moderately varied distribution.
Steps Taken:
1. Used "Visual Binning" to create 6 classes.
2. Used "Frequencies" > "Charts" > "Histogram" to visualize.
3. Selected the binned variable for x-axis and frequency for y-axis.
Interpretation:
The histogram confirmed the most common anxiety scores were concentrated in the
midrange (66-78), with fewer students at the extremes.
Conclusion
This project used SPSS to analyze anxiety scores before a midterm exam. The results
indicated a central tendency around 69-70 with some variability. The frequency table and
histogram further supported these findings, providing a clear visual and statistical
representation of student anxiety levels.
