SUB-STRAND: PLANTS AS LIVING THINGS.
Introduction to living things:

iving things grow, reproduce, respire (breathe), feed, and respond to their environment.

 Unlike rocks or water (non-living things), plants are alive because they
grow from seeds, reproduce, and change over time.

 Examples in Environment: Trees, flowers, grass, humans, insects, animals,


birds.

Characteristics of Plants (How We Know They Are Alive).


i. Growth: Plants life cycle consists of for stages; seed, sprout, small plants,
and adult plants.

ii. Reproduction: Plants produce flowers, fruits, and seeds to create new
plants.

iii. Response to Environment(stimuli): Plants respond to their surroundings.


For example, sunflowers turn to face the sun (light), and roots grow down
toward water.

iv. Nutrition and Feeding: Plants make their own food through a process called
photosynthesis using sunlight, water, and air.

v. Waste Removal: Plants remove waste through their leaves, such as


releasing oxygen.
vi. Plants die: due to drought, heat, cold, fires, and plant diseases.
