UNIT-I

ENGINEERING CURVES AND SCALES

1. Draw an ellipse when the distance of its focus from its directrix is 50 mm
and eccentricity is 2/3. Also, draw a tangent and a normal to the ellipse at
a point 45 mm away from the directrix.
2. Draw a parabola when the distance between its focus and directrix is 50
mm. Also, draw a tangent and a normal at a point 45 mm from the
directrix.
3. Draw a hyperbola when the distance of its focus from its directrix is 50
mm and eccentricity is 3/2. Also, draw a tangent and a normal to the
hyperbola at a point 25 mm from the directrix.
4. Draw a cycloid of a circle of diameter 50 mm for one revolution. Also,
draw a tangent and a normal to the curve at a point 35 mm above the base
line.
5. Draw an epicycloid of a circle of diameter 50 mm, which rolls outside a
circle of diameter 180 mm for one revolution. Also, draw a tangent and a
normal to the epicycloid at a point 135 mm from the centre of the
directing circle.
6. Draw a hypocycloid of a circle of diameter 50 mm, which rolls inside a
circle of diameter 180 mm for one revolution. Also, draw a tangent and a
normal to the hypocycloid at a point 50 mm from the centre of the
directing circle.
7. Draw an involute on a triangle of side 30 mm. Also draw tangent and
normal to the curve at any point on the curve.
8. Draw an involute on a square of side 30 mm. Also draw tangent and
normal to the curve at a point 60 from centre of square.
9. Draw an involute on a pentagon of side 30 mm. Also draw tangent and
normal to the curve at point 70 from centre of pentagon.

PROJECTIONS OF POINTS, STRAIGHT LINES AND PLANES

1. Draw the projections of the following points on a common reference line


keeping the distance between their projectors 25 mm apart.
(a) Point A is 40 mm above the H.P. and 25 mm in front of the V.P.
(b) Point B is 40 mm above the H.P. and in the V.P.
(c) Point C is 25 mm in front of the V.P. and in the H.P.
(d) Point D is 25 mm above the H.P. and 30 mm behind the V.P.
(e) Point E is in the H.P. and 30 mm behind the V.P.
(f) Point F is 40 mm below the H.P. and 30 mm behind the V.P.
(g) Point G is 25 mm below the H.P. and 40 mm in front of the V.P.
(h) Point H is in the V.P. and 30 mm below the H.P.
2. An 80 mm long line PQ has end P 20 mm above H.P. and 40 mm in front
of the V.P. The line is inclined at 30° to the H.P. and is parallel to the
V.P. Draw the projections of the line.
3. An 80 mm long line PQ is inclined at 30° to the V.P. and is parallel to the
H.P. The end P of the line is 20 mm above the H.P. and 40 mm in front of
the V.P. Draw the projections of the line.
4. A line AB of 70 long is parallel to and 25 in front of V.P. It’s one end is
on HP while the other is 40 above HP. Draw the projections of the line
and determine its inclination with HP.
5. A line AB is on HP and its one end is 20 in front of VP. The line makes
an angle of 450 with VP and its front view is 60 long. Draw the
projections of the line and determine the true length.
6. The front view of a 75mm long line measures 55mm. The line is parallel
to the HP and one of its ends is in the VP and 25mm above the HP. Draw
the projections of the line and determine its inclination with VP.
7. A 70 mm long line PQ has its end P 20 mm above the H.P. and 30 mm in
front of the V.P. The line is inclined at 45° to the H.P. and 30° to the V.P.
draw its projections.
8. A line AB of 80 long has its end A 15 from both HP and VP. The other
end B is 40 above HP and 50 in front of VP. Draw the projections of the
line and determine the inclinations of the line with HP and VP.
9. A line AB of 70 long has its end A at 10 above HP and 15 in front of VP.
Its front view and top view measures 50 and 60 respectively. Draw the
projections of the line and determine its inclination with HP and VP.
10.A hexagonal plane of side 30 mm has an edge on the H.P. The surface is
inclined at 45° to the H.P. and perpendicular to the V.P. Draw its
projections.
11.A circular plane of diameter 50 mm is resting on a point of the
circumference on the H.P. The plane is inclined at 30° to the H.P. and its
centre is 35 mm in front of the V.P. draw its projections.
12.A hexagonal plane of side 30 mm has an edge in the V.P. The surface of
the plane is inclined at 45° to the V.P. and perpendicular to the H.P. Draw
its projections.
13.A rectangular plane of sides 70 mm and 35 mm has a shorter side on the
H.P. The surface of the plane is inclined at 60° to the H.P. and
perpendicular to the V.P. Draw its projections.
14.A semi-circular plane of diameter 70 mm has its straight edge on the V.P.
and inclined at 30° to the H.P. Draw the projection of the plane when its
surface is inclined at 45° to the V.P.
15.A hexagonal plane of side 30 mm has an edge on the H.P. Its surface is
inclined at 45° to the H.P. and the edge on which the plane rests is
inclined at 30° to the V.P. Draw its projections
16.A hexagonal plane of side 30 mm has a corner on the ground. Its surface
is inclined at 45° to the H.P. and the top view of the diagonal through the
corner which is in the H.P. makes an angle of 60° with the V.P. Draw its
projections.
17.A square ABCD of 50 mm side has its corner A in the H.P., its diagonal
AC inclined at 30° to the H.P. and the diagonal BD inclined at 45° to the
V.P. and parallel to the H.P. Draw its projections.

1. A pentagonal prism of base edge 30 mm and axis 60 mm rests on an edge


of its base in the H.P. Its axis is parallel to V.P. and inclined at 45° to the
H.P. Draw its projections
2. A hexagonal pyramid of base side 30 mm and axis 60 mm has an edge of
its base on the ground. Its axis is inclined at 30° to the ground and
parallel to the V.P. Draw its projections.
3. A hexagonal pyramid of base edge 30 mm and axis 60 mm, has a
triangular face on the ground and the axis parallel to the V.P. Draw its
projections
4. A cylinder of base diameter 50 mm and axis 70 mm has a generator in the
V.P. and inclined at 45° to the H.P. Draw its projections.
5. A hexagonal prism of base edge 30 mm and axis 70 mm has an edge of
its base in the V.P. such that the axis is inclined at 30° to the V.P. and
parallel to the H.P. Draw its projections.
6. A pentagonal pyramid of base side 30 mm and axis 55 mm has a
triangular face in the V.P. and the base edge contained by that triangular
face is perpendicular to the H.P. Draw its projections.
7. Draw the projections of a cone, base 75 mm diameter and axis 100 mm
long, lying on the H.P. on one of its generators with the axis parallel to
the V.P.
8. A pentagonal prism of base side 30 mm and axis 60 mm has one of its
rectangular faces on the H.P. and the axis inclined at 60° to the V.P.
Draw its projections.
9. Draw projections of a cube of edge 45 mm, resting on one of its corners
in the H.P. with a solid diagonal vertical.
10.A cone of base diameter 50 mm and height 60 mm is resting on a point of
its base circle on the H.P. with its axis parallel to the V.P. and inclined at

11.A pentagonal prism of side of base 25 and axis 40 long is resting on H.P
on a corner of its base. Draw the projections of the prism, when the base
is inclined at 600 to the H.P and the axis appears to be inclined at 300 to
V.P.
12.A hexagonal prism of base 25 side and axis 45 long, is positioned with
one of its base edge on H.P such that the axis is inclined at 30 0 to H.P and
450 to V.P. draw its projections.

SECTIONS OF SOLIDS AND DEVELOPMENT OF SURFACES

1. A square pyramid, base 40 mm side and axis 65 mm long, has its base on
the H.P. and all the edges of the base equally inclined to the V.P. It is cut
by a section plane, perpendicular to the V.P., inclined at 45° to the H.P.
and bisecting the axis. Draw its sectional top view, sectional side view
and true shape of the section.
2. A square prism, base 40 mm side, axis 80 mm long, has its base on the
H.P. and its faces equally inclined to the V.P. It is cut by a plane,
perpendicular to the V.P., inclined at 60° to the H.P. and passing through
a point on the axis, 55 mm above the H.P. Draw its front view, sectional
top view and true shape.
3. A cone of base diameter 50 mm and axis 60 mm long is resting on its
base on the H.P. It is cut by a section plane, bisecting the axis and
inclined at 45° to the H.P. Draw its sectional top view and true shape of
the section.
4. A cylinder of base diameter 50 mm and axis 60 mm is resting on its base
on the H.P. It is cut by a section plane perpendicular to V.P., the V.T. of
which cuts the axis at a point 40 mm from the bottom face and inclined at
45° to the reference line. Draw its front view, sectional top view and true
shape of the section.
5. A pentagonal pyramid of base side 30 mm and axis 60 mm is resting on
its base on the H.P. with an edge of the base nearer the V.P., parallel to it.
A vertical section plane inclined at 45° to the V.P. cuts the pyramid at a
distance of 8 mm from the axis. Draw its sectional front view, top view
and true shape of the section.
6. A hexagonal pyramid of side base 30 and axis 60 long, is resting on its
base on H.P with an edge of the base perpendicular to VP. It is cut by a
section plane inclined at 30 to the HP and passing through the axis at 20
from the base. Draw three views of the solid obtain true shape.
7. A cylinder of 40 mm diameter, 60 mm height and having its axis vertical,
is cut by a section plane, perpendicular to the V.P., inclined at 45° to the
H.P. and intersecting the axis .32 mm above the base. Draw its front
view, sectional top view, sectional side view and true shape
8. A cylinder of base diameter 50 mm and axis 70 mm is resting on ground
with its axis vertical. It is cut by a section plane perpendicular to the V.P.,
inclined at 45° to the H.P., passing through the top of a generator and cuts
all the other generators. Draw the development of its lateral surface.
9. A pentagonal prism of base side 30 mm and axis 70 mm is resting on its
base on the H.P. with a rectangular face parallel to the V.P. It is cut by a
section plane inclined at 45° to the H.P and passes through the mid-point
of the axis. Draw the development of the lateral surface of the truncated
prism.
10.A hexagonal prism of base side 30 mm and axis 70 mm is resting on its
base on the ground with a side of base inclined at 45° to the V.P. It is cut
by a section plane inclined at 45° to the H.P. and passes through a point
15 mm below the top end of the axis. Draw the development of the lateral
surface of the truncated prism.
11.A cone of base diameter 50 mm and axis 60 mm is resting on its base on
the H.P. A section plane perpendicular to V.P. and inclined at 45° to H.P.,

cut by an auxiliary inclined plane whose V.T. is inclined at 60° to the

15.A cylinder of base diameter 50 mm and axis 60 mm is resting on its base
on the H.P. It is cut by a section plane perpendicular to V.P., and inclined
