Math-Grade 5 Questions Term3

Ch-Algebra
Algebraic Expressions:
• An expression that consist of algebraic terms, operation symbols (+,-, ×, ÷) or brackets is
known as algebraic expression. It has no equal sign.
e.g. 2x +3 , x2 - 3
• In the algebraic term 3a, the number 3 in front of the variable a is called coefficient.
• In algebra like terms are terms that have the same variable. E.g. 2x and 3x.
• When two terms are not like terms, they are known as unlike terms. E.g. 2x and 3y.
• We add or subtract the like terms by adding or subtracting their coefficient.
• We do not add or subtract the coefficient of unlike terms. E.g. adding 2x and 3y gives 2x + 3y.

A variable is a symbol for a number we do not know yet. It is usually a letter x or y.

A number on its own is called a constant.
A coefficient is a number used to multiply a variable.
