CE383 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

PROBLEM SET 3

Q1) The supports B and C settle down by 8 mm and 4 mm, respectively. Determine the moments
acting at the ends of each member using moment distribution method, then draw the moment
diagram for the whole structure. EI = 30000 kN-m2

Q2) Determine the member end moments using moment distribution method, then draw the
moment diagram for each member of the frame. Support A is pinned. EI is constant, all members
are axially rigid.

Q3) Determine the member end moments using moment distribution method, then draw the
moment diagram for the whole structure. EI is constant, all members are axially rigid.
Q4) Analyze the given structure using the moment distribution method, sketch the deformed shape,
calculate the support reactions, and draw the moment diagram. Assume that all members are
axially rigid and have the same EI.

Q5) Analyze the given structure using the moment distribution method, sketch the deformed shape,
calculate the support reactions, and draw the moment diagram. Assume that all members are
axially rigid and have the same EI.
Q6) The slope deflections equations and the fixed-end moments under uniform loading for a
parabolic haunch beam are given below.

Determine the stiffness factors and carry over factors for the given parabolic haunch beam?

Q7) Analyze the given structure using moment distribution method and draw the moment diagram.
Note that beams AB and BC are parabolic haunch beams, CD has constant section flexural rigidity
2EI, and BE has constant section flexural rigidity EI/10. Assume that all members are axially rigid.
Take EI = 5.33× 106 kN.m2.
Q8) Analyze the given structure using moment distribution method, calculate the support
reactions, and draw the moment diagram. Then, calculate the rotation at point A? All members are
axially rigid.
