CE383 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
PROBLEM SET 4
Q1) Use the General Stiffness Method to determine all support reactions. Use the minimum
degrees of freedom necessary. EI=2x104 kN-m2. The beam is axially rigid.
Q2) Using General Stiffness Method, determine the reactions at the supports and draw shear &
moment diagrams. EI is constant. Solve this question with 1 DOF and then with 3 DOFs.
Q3) Given structure is composed of axially rigid frame members with same EI. Analyze the
structure by using general stiffness method, and determine all support reactions.
Q4) Analyze the structure by using general stiffness method, and determine all support reactions.
All members are axially rigid.
Q5) Given structure has constant EI = 15×103 kN-m2 and axially rigid members. Besides 15 kN/m
distributed load acting on ABCD, there is a support settlement at F by an amount of 1 cm taking
down the rest of the structure with it. Analyze the structure by using general stiffness method, and
determine all support reactions. All members are axially rigid.
Q6) In the structure shown below, all members are axially rigid frame members. Members BC and
CD are connected with a pin-connection at point C. There is a support settlement at point E and
the magnitude of the settlement is 1 cm. For all members, the flexural rigidity, EI, is equal to 60000
kN/m2. Analyze the structure by using general stiffness method, and determine all support
reactions.

Q7) Analyze the structure by using general stiffness method, and determine all support reactions.
Note that, members ABC and BE are axially rigid frame members and BD is a truss member.
All members have the same EI and you can take the magnitude of EA for truss member BD as
equal to 2EI of the frame members.
Q8) For the given structure, frame members (AB, BC, CD, DE, and CF) are axially rigid and have
constant section flexural rigidity EI, and truss member CE has section axial rigidity EA. C and D
are pin joints, and B is a rigid joint. Use general stiffness method in your analysis, and determine
all support reactions. Take EA = EI in magnitude.
Q9) In the given structure, AB, BC, and CD are axially rigid frame members with section flexural
rigidity EI. BE and CE are axially deformable truss members with section flexural rigidity EA.
Members AB, BC, and BE are pin-connected at B; members BC, CD, and CE are pin-connected
at C; members BE and CE are pin-connected at E. Take EA = EI in magnitude. Analyze the
structure by using general stiffness method, and determine all support reactions as follows:
a) Consider the whole structure for analysis and do not assume that there is symmetry,
b) Consider the whole structure and assume symmetry in your analysis.
c) Consider half of the structure for analysis by using symmetry.
Q10) In the given structure, AB, BC, CD, DE, and EF are axially rigid frame members with
constant section flexural rigidity EI, and AC and DF are truss members with section axial rigidity
EA. Members AB and BC are pin connected at B; members DE and EF are pin connected at E.
BCDE is continuous. Take EI = EA in magnitude, use only 2 degrees of freedom (DOFs) and the
General Stiffness Method in your analysis, and answer the following questions for the structure:
a) Set up the structure stiffness matrix corresponding to the 2 DOFs.
b) Set up the load vector corresponding to the 2 DOFs, and determine the 2 DOFs.
c) Plot the axial force, shear force, and bending moment diagrams along BCDE only.
Q11) The given structure is composed of axially rigid frame members AB, BC, CD, and DE with
section flexural rigidity EI, and truss member BD with section axial rigidity EA. Frame members
AB-BC and CD-DE are pin connected to each other as shown below, while BC-CD are rigidly
connected to each other. Take EI = EA in magnitude and determine the axial force in the truss
member. Plot the axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams, and draw the deflected
shape of the structure. Use general stiffness method in your analysis.
