Ratio and Proportion

What is Ratio?

Ratio is a way to compare two numbers. It shows how much of something there is compared to another. For
example,

If there are 3 apples and 2 oranges in a basket, the ratio of apples to oranges is expressed as: 3:2.

Other examples of ratios are:

1. There are 4 boys and 5 girls in a classroom. The ratio of boys to girls is 4:5.
2. A cake recipe uses 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of sugar. The ratio of flour to sugar is 2:1.

What Is a Proportion?

A proportion shows that two ratios are equal. It tells us that the comparison between the two groups is the same.

For example:
If there are 6 apples and 4 oranges, the ratio is 6:4.
If there are 3 apples and 2 oranges, the ratio is 3:2.
These two ratios are the same because:
6:4 = 3:2
We can write this as a proportion:
