INTRODUCTION
1 Background of the Study
Environmental pollution has become a major challenge in many communities
due to the increasing use of plastic bags. Plastic bags are commonly used for
packaging and carrying goods because they are cheap and convenient.
However, they take a very long time to decompose and often accumulate in
the environment, causing pollution and harming living organisms.
As a result, there is a growing need for environmentally friendly alternatives
to plastic bags. One such alternative is the paper bag. Paper bags are
biodegradable, recyclable, and can be produced using locally available
materials such as waste paper and manila paper. They are safer to the
environment because they decompose naturally after disposal.
This project focuses on making paper bags from recycled paper materials.
The project promotes recycling, environmental conservation, creativity, and
practical skills among learners. It also demonstrates how waste materials can
be transformed into useful products that contribute to sustainable
development.
2 Problem Statement
The widespread use of plastic bags has led to increased environmental
pollution in many areas. Plastic bags block drainage channels, litter the
environment, and take many years to decompose. Despite the availability of
recyclable materials such as waste paper, many people continue to depend
on plastic bags. Therefore, there is a need to develop and promote
environmentally friendly alternatives that can reduce pollution and
encourage proper waste management.
3 Purpose of the Project
The purpose of this project was to make paper bags from recycled paper
materials as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags.
4 Objectives of the Project

7 Scope of the Project
The project focused on the collection of waste paper and the production of
paper bags using simple and locally available materials. The bags were
designed for carrying light items and packaging products.
8 Justification of the Project
The project was carried out because paper bags are environmentally friendly
and can help reduce the negative effects of plastic pollution. The materials
required are affordable and easily available, making the project suitable for
students and communities. The project also supports the UNEB theme of
embracing creativity and practical skills for sustainable development of
society.
