Tutorial 4
Unless otherwise specified, do not use rounded values for calculations. Present
answers accurate to three decimal digits (where needed).

1. For each of the following, determine the magnitude and the direction an-
gles of each vector in R2 .
(a) 14x̂ + 7ŷ.
(b) −3x̂ + 6ŷ.

2. Let â, b̂ ∈ R2 be unit vectors. Determine the requirements which â and b̂

must meet so that â + b̂ ∈ R2 is a unit vector.
3. Consider →−r = a1 x̂ + a2 ŷ ∈ R2 . Determine a1 and a2 if →−
r is a vector of
magnitude 10, if r is in the first quadrant of the xy-plane and if →

− −r forms

an angle of 30 with the positive x-axis.

4. Suppose that the vectors → −
a , b ,→c ∈ R2 are the position vectors of the
2
points (3, −1), (−2, 4), (1, 2) ∈ R , respectively.

(a) Determine 3→−a − 2 b + 4→
−c in component form.

(b) Determine || 3→
−a − 2 b + 4→
−c ||.

(c) Determine a unit vector with the same direction as 3→

a − 2 b + 4→
−c

5. A particle is displaced from the point (1, 2) ∈ R2 over a distance of 6 m
in a direction with an x-direction cosine −0.81 and where the y-direction
cosine is negative. Determine the co-ordinates of the endpoint of the
displacement.
6. In R2 , with O as the origin, the position vectors of the points A and B
are 21ŷ and 8x̂ − 6ŷ, respectively.
−−→
(a) Determine OC, where C is the fourth vertex of the parallelogram
OACB.
(b) Determine the position vector of the point D on AB such that AD :
DB = 3 : 2.
−−→ −−→ −→
(c) Show that 3OC + 5DO = OA.
7. In R2 the point P lies on the line through the points A = (2, 1) and
B = (11, 4). The distance between P and B is three times as large as that
between P and A. Determine all possible co-ordinates for P
