PETROL ENGINE MAINTENANCE NOTES
Based on Cooling System, Valve Clearance and Oil Pump
Practical Assessments
1. Introduction to Petrol Engine Maintenance
Petrol engine maintenance involves inspection, servicing, adjustment and repair of engine systems
to improve performance, fuel economy and engine life.
2. Cooling System
Functions: Maintain correct operating temperature, prevent overheating and improve efficiency.
Main Components: Radiator, Water Pump, Thermostat, Cooling Fan, Hose Pipes, Pressure Cap
and Expansion Tank.
Thermostat Testing: Remove thermostat, heat water, immerse thermostat and observe opening
temperature.
3. Valve Clearance Adjustment
Valve clearance is the gap between the rocker arm and valve stem. Correct clearance ensures
proper engine operation.
Procedure: Set piston at TDC, insert feeler gauge, adjust screw and lock nut, then recheck
clearance.
4. Lubrication System
Functions: Lubrication, cooling, cleaning, sealing and corrosion prevention.
5. Engine Oil Pump Servicing
Drain oil, remove oil pan, dismantle pump, clean components, inspect wear, measure clearances,
reassemble and test.
6. Engine Oil
Qualities: Good viscosity stability, high lubricity, anti-wear properties, oxidation resistance and
detergency.
7. Safety Precautions
Wear PPE, disconnect battery when required, use correct tools and maintain good housekeeping.
