Class 9 Mathematics – ALLEN Style Combined Notes
1. Number System
• Introduction: The number system is the foundation of mathematics. It includes different types of
numbers used for counting, measuring, and calculations. Understanding number systems helps
students solve algebraic and real■life problems.
• Natural Numbers: Counting numbers starting from 1. Example: 1,2,3,4... These numbers are infinite
and follow closure, commutative and associative properties.
• Whole Numbers: Natural numbers including zero. W = {0,1,2,3,4...}. Zero represents absence of
quantity.
• Integers: Include negative numbers, zero, and positive numbers. Z = {...-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3...}.
• Rational Numbers: Numbers that can be written in the form p/q where q ≠ 0.
• Irrational Numbers: Numbers that cannot be written in p/q form. Example: √2, √3, π.
• Real Numbers: Combination of rational and irrational numbers.
2. Polynomials
• A polynomial is an algebraic expression consisting of variables and coefficients.
• Example: 3x² + 5x + 1.
• Terms are separated by + or − signs.
• Degree of polynomial is the highest power of variable.
• Types: Monomial, Binomial, Trinomial.
• Important concepts: Zero of polynomial, Remainder theorem, Factor theorem.
3. Introduction to Euclid's Geometry
• Euclid was a Greek mathematician known as the Father of Geometry.
• Geometry is based on axioms and postulates.
• Axioms are universal truths accepted without proof.
• Postulates are assumptions specific to geometry.
• Example: A straight line can be drawn joining any two points.
4. Lines and Angles
• Types of angles: Acute (<90°), Right (90°), Obtuse (90°–180°), Straight (180°).
• Complementary angles sum to 90°.
• Supplementary angles sum to 180°.
• Vertically opposite angles are equal.
5. Triangles
• A triangle has three sides and three angles.
• Angle Sum Property: Sum of angles = 180°.
• Types: Equilateral, Isosceles, Scalene.
• Congruence rules: SSS, SAS, ASA, RHS.
6. Quadrilaterals
• A quadrilateral has four sides.
• Sum of interior angles = 360°.
• Important types: Parallelogram, Rectangle, Square, Rhombus.
7. Circles
• A circle is a set of points equidistant from a centre.
• Important terms: Radius, Diameter, Chord, Arc, Sector.
• Theorem: Angle in a semicircle is 90°.
8. Coordinate Geometry
• Coordinate geometry uses algebra to study geometric figures.
• Points are written as ordered pairs (x,y).
• The coordinate plane has four quadrants.
9. Linear Equations in Two Variables
• General form: ax + by + c = 0.
• Solutions are ordered pairs that satisfy the equation.
• The graph of a linear equation is a straight line.
10. Heron's Formula
• Used to find the area of a triangle when all three sides are known.
• s = (a+b+c)/2
• Area = √[s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)]
11. Surface Area and Volume
• Cube: Surface Area = 6a², Volume = a³.
• Cuboid: Surface Area = 2(lb + bh + hl), Volume = lbh.
• Cylinder: Volume = πr²h.
• Cone: Volume = (1/3)πr²h.
• Sphere: Surface Area = 4πr².
12. Statistics
• Statistics is the study of data collection, analysis and interpretation.
• Mean = Sum of observations / Total observations.
• Data can be represented using bar graphs, histograms, and frequency polygons.
Final Exam Tips (ALLEN Style)
• Revise formulas regularly.
• Practice diagrams in geometry.
• Solve many practice questions.
• Show step■by■step solutions in exams.
• Manage time effectively during tests.
