Introduction
Living organisms perform many activities to survive. These activities include obtaining food, breathing,
transporting materials, removing waste products, growing and reproducing. The processes that help
maintain life are called life processes.
Every living organism requires energy to perform various functions. This energy is obtained from food and
released through respiration. Nutrients, oxygen and other materials must be transported to all parts of the
body. Harmful waste products must also be removed regularly. These essential functions together are
known as life processes.
Life processes ensure the proper functioning of living organisms and help them survive in different
environments.
What are Life Processes?
Life processes are the basic activities performed by living organisms to maintain life.
The main life processes are:
1. Nutrition
2. Respiration
3. Transportation
4. Excretion
Without these processes, organisms cannot survive.
Nutrition
Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain food and utilize it for energy, growth and repair.
2
Types of Nutrition:
Autotrophic Nutrition
Green plants prepare their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide and water through photosynthesis.
Equation:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Requirements:
• Sunlight
• Chlorophyll
• Carbon dioxide
• Water
Heterotrophic Nutrition
Animals cannot prepare their own food and depend on plants or other animals.
Types: 1. Holozoic Nutrition 2. Saprophytic Nutrition 3. Parasitic Nutrition
Humans show holozoic nutrition.
Human Digestive System
The digestive system helps break down food into simpler substances that can be absorbed by the body.
Main Parts:
Mouth
Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva contains enzymes that start digestion of starch.
Oesophagus
Food passes through the oesophagus to the stomach.
Stomach
The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes. Food gets partially digested here.
3
Small Intestine
Most digestion and absorption occur in the small intestine. Digestive juices from the liver and pancreas help
complete digestion.
Large Intestine
Water is absorbed and undigested food is stored before elimination.
Functions of Digestion:
• Provides energy.
• Helps growth.
• Repairs body tissues.
(Draw a labelled diagram of the human digestive system.)
