Solution Important Questions

The document outlines important questions related to the chapter on solutions, including definitions of molarity and molality, Raoult's Law, and the van’t Hoff factor. It includes both short answer and numerical questions, as well as long answer questions that cover deviations from Raoult’s Law, osmotic pressure, and the effects of non-volatile solutes on solution properties. The questions aim to assess understanding of key concepts and calculations in solution chemistry.

Important questions of solution chapter

Short Answer Type Questions (1-2 Marks)

1. Define molarity and molality. Which one changes with temperature?

2. State Raoult’s Law for an ideal solution.
3. What is van’t Hoff factor (i)? How does it affect colligative properties?
4. Differentiate between ideal and non-ideal solutions with examples.
5. Why does common salt (NaCl) depress the freezing point of water?
6. Henry’ s law
7. Explain Why
A. Liquid ammonia bottle first cold in ice before opening it.
B. Aquatic species feel more comfortable in winter than in summer.
C. Solution of chloroform and acetone source negative deviation from
Raoults ,s law.

Numerical Questions (3 Marks)

8. Calculate the molarity of a solution containing 5.85 g of NaCl in 500 mL of

solution.
9. A solution is prepared by dissolving 5 g of non-volatile solute in 95 g of water. The
vapour pressure of pure water is 25 mm Hg. Calculate the vapour pressure of the
solution.
10. Determine the molar mass of a solute if 2 g of the solute dissolved in 100 g of
water lowers the freezing point by 0.93°C. (Given: Kf for water = 1.86 K kg mol⁻¹).
11. The boiling point of a solution containing 0.5 g of a substance in 100 g of benzene
was found to be 80.2°C. Calculate the molar mass of the solute. (Given: Kb for
benzene = 2.53 K kg mol⁻¹, boiling point of benzene = 80.1°C).

Long Answer Type Questions (4-5 Marks)

12. Explain positive and negative deviations from Raoult’s Law with suitable
examples and graphs.
13. Derive the relation between elevation in boiling point and molar mass of the
solute.
14. Explain the osmotic pressure and derive its formula.
15. What are azeotropes? Explain different types with examples.
16. What is the effect of adding a non-volatile solute on the boiling point, freezing
point, and vapour pressure of a solution?
