Our discussion on gender and development allowed us to better understand how gender roles,
expectations, and inequalities shape everyday life. We realized that gender is not just a
personal identity but a social structure that affects access to opportunities, rights, and treatment
in society. Through sharing our experiences and observations, we developed a deeper
awareness of how gender issues are present in our communities and how they influence our
perspectives as individuals and as future professionals.
Gender Roles and Social Expectations
One of our key takeaways is how deeply rooted gender roles still are in society. Growing up,
many of us experienced expectations based on whether we are male or female. For example,
some of us were taught that men should be strong and not show emotions, while women are
expected to be nurturing and soft-spoken. As students, we have seen this reflected in group
activities where leadership roles are sometimes automatically given to males, while females are
expected to handle organizing or supportive tasks. This made us realize that these stereotypes
can limit a person’s potential and confidence. Personally, some of us have felt pressured to act
a certain way just to meet societal expectations, which shows how gender norms still influence
our behavior and opportunities.
Gender Inequality in Opportunities
Another realization we had is that gender inequality still exists in access to opportunities, even if
it is less visible today. In our communities, we have observed that men are often preferred for
physically demanding jobs, while women are sometimes underestimated in leadership roles.
Some group members shared experiences where their opinions were not taken seriously
because of their gender. This made us reflect on how subtle discrimination can still affect
people’s growth and participation in society. As citizens, we recognize the importance of
promoting equal opportunities regardless of gender, especially in education and employment.
Awareness and the Importance of Gender Sensitivity
Through our discussion, we realized that awareness plays a big role in addressing gender
issues. Before, some of us did not fully understand terms like gender sensitivity or gender
equality, but now we see how important they are in creating a fair society. In our daily lives, this
can be applied by respecting others’ identities, avoiding stereotypes, and being mindful of our
words and actions. For instance, in school, we can encourage equal participation in group work
and avoid judging classmates based on gender. These small actions contribute to a more
inclusive environment.
Role of Youth in Promoting Gender Equality
As college students, we reflected on our role in promoting gender equality in society. We believe
that change starts with our generation because we are more exposed to discussions about
inclusivity and human rights. In our own experiences, we have used social media to share
information about gender issues or to support campaigns that promote equality. We also try to
challenge outdated beliefs within our families and communities, even if it is sometimes difficult.
This made us realize that being aware is not enough. We must also take action in our own
simple ways.
Overall, our reflections on gender and development helped us understand that gender issues
are not distant concepts but realities that affect our daily lives. From social expectations to
unequal opportunities, we see how gender continues to shape society. However, we also
realized that change is possible through awareness, respect, and active participation. As
individuals and as a group, we are now more committed to promoting equality and being more
mindful of how we treat others, regardless of gender.
