Writing a Play Script Can you turn this piece of text into a play script? First,
colour in all of the speech in the text. Next, colour in anything which tells you
how the speech is said. Finally, colour in anything which is done but not
said.
The wolf scurried up to the cottage door on tiptoes, so as not to alarm Granny.
Knock, knock, knock. "Who is it?" quavered a frail voice from inside. "It's me,
Granny! It's your granddaughter," said Mr Wolf in a high, squeaking voice. "The
door's unlocked, dear," Granny called out. The wolf lifted the latch.

forget: You don't need to include speech marks. Your stage directions should be
in the present tense.
Writing a Play Script Answers The wolf scurries up to the cottage door on

(quavering/in a frail voice/from inside) Who is it? Wolf: (in a high, squeaking
voice) It's me, Granny! It's your granddaughter. Granny: The door's unlocked,

Instructions and Activities
1. Look at the first playscript writing activity (Activity 1). Read and follow the
given directions carefully to complete your script. Then, check your
answers using the answer sheet and make corrections immediately if there
are any mistakes.
2. On the second sheet (Activity 2), you are required to complete the task
independently without using an answer sheet.

ACTIVITY 1: TURN THIS PIECE INTO A PLAYSCRIPT! Here are 3 extracts from
a book. Change each one into a playscript, just like in ACTIVITY 1. Remember to
include: Character’s name and dialogue, Emotions and gestures - how they say it
(e.g. happily, angrily), Stage Direction - what the characters do (actions, not
spoken).
ACTIVITY 3: After you finish all 3, choose ONE of them and continue writing the
playscript by adding 3 more scenes. Don’t forget to include narration to help
describe the story’s setting. You may create the story from the beginning.

Extract 1: The princess crept quietly towards the tower window and peered
outside. "Who's there?" whispered a nervous voice from above. "It's me, Princess
Lily," called Jack excitedly from the garden. "Oh, thank goodness you've come!"
replied the princess with relief. Jack waved his hand and tossed a rope ladder
towards the tower.
Extract 2: The pirate captain stomped across the deck and scanned the horizon.
"Land ahead!" shouted a sailor eagerly. "At last!" cried the captain in a booming
voice. "Should we prepare the anchor?" asked another sailor politely. The captain
nodded firmly and pointed towards the island.
Extract 3: The giant padded softly through the forest and stopped beside a
small cottage. "Who's making all that noise?" grumbled an old woman from
inside. "Sorry to disturb you," replied the giant gently. "What do you want?"
demanded the old woman suspiciously. The giant bowed his head and carefully
placed a basket of fruit by the door.
