SECTION 1 — DIGITAL SAT: EXAM OVERVIEW
About the Digital SAT
The Digital SAT (dSAT), administered by the College Board, replaced the paper SAT in March 2023 for
international students and March 2024 for U.S. students. It is taken on a computer using the Bluebook app
and features an adaptive, multi-stage testing (MST) format. The exam is shorter, more modern, and results
are available faster than the old paper format.
Full Exam Structure
Section Modules Questions Time per Module Total Time
Reading & Writing 2 54 (27 per module) 32 min each 64 min
Math 2 44 (22 per module) 35 min each 70 min
TOTAL 4 98 — ~2h 14min
Adaptive Format — How It Works
The Digital SAT uses Multi-Stage Adaptive Testing (MST). Both sections (R&W; and Math) are split into
two modules:
• Module 1: Standard difficulty. All students get the same questions.
• Module 2: Adapts based on your Module 1 performance.
— Score well in M1 → harder M2 (higher score ceiling, up to 800)
— Score poorly in M1 → easier M2 (lower score ceiling)
■ Strategy for Adaptive Format
• Aim to answer as many Module 1 questions correctly as possible — it determines your score ceiling.
• In Module 2 (hard), tough questions are worth more — do not skip or guess carelessly.
• You cannot go back between modules — treat each module as its own exam.

SECTION 2 — ALGEBRA (≈35% | 13–15 Questions)
Algebra is the single largest domain on the Digital SAT. Master it and you've secured roughly 1/3 of your
Math score. Focus on speed and accuracy with linear equations, inequalities, and systems.
2.1 Linear Equations in One Variable
A linear equation has the form ax + b = c. Key skills:
• Solve for x: isolate the variable using inverse operations
• Rearrange literal equations (solve for one variable in terms of others)
• Identify no solution (0 = 3) vs. infinite solutions (0 = 0)
Solve: ax + b = c → x = (c − b) / a
Special Cases:
Condition Meaning Example
Contradiction: 0 = k (k≠0) No Solution 2x + 4 = 2x + 7 → 4 = 7 (impossible)
Identity: 0 = 0 Infinitely Many Solutions 2x + 4 = 2x + 4 → 4 = 4 (always true)
2.2 Linear Equations in Two Variables
Three equivalent forms — know them all:
Form Equation Best Used For
Slope-Intercept y = mx + b Reading slope (m) and y-intercept (b) directly
Standard Form Ax + By = C Finding intercepts; use x=0 for y-int, y=0 for x-int
Point-Slope y − y■ = m(x − x■) Writing equation given a point and slope
Slope: Slope m = (y■ − y■) / (x■ − x■)
• Parallel lines: same slope (m■ = m■), different y-intercepts
• Perpendicular lines: slopes are negative reciprocals (m■ × m■ = −1)
2.3 Systems of Linear Equations
A system of two linear equations can have 1 solution, 0 solutions, or infinite solutions.
Method Steps Best When
Substitution Solve one eq for y, substitute into other One variable is easy to isolate
Elimination Add/subtract equations to cancel a variable Coefficients are easy to match
Graphing (Desmos) Graph both lines; find intersection point Visual check; use on-screen calculator
■ Quick Solution Check
• Number of solutions check: rewrite both as y = mx + b
• Different slopes → exactly 1 solution (lines intersect)
• Same slope, different intercept → no solution (parallel lines)
Prepared for SAT Candidates — Not for commercial distribution Page 4
DIGITAL SAT MATH — COMPLETE NOTES 2025-26 College Board | May 2026
• Same slope, same intercept → infinite solutions (same line)
2.4 Linear Inequalities
Solve like equations with ONE critical rule:
• FLIP the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number!
• Graph: open circle (< or >) vs. filled circle (≤ or ≥)
• For 2-variable inequalities: shade above (>) or below (<) the line
■ Key Rule: If −2x > 6 → x < −3 (sign flips!)
2.5 Linear Functions in Context
Many SAT algebra questions disguise equations as word problems. Translate carefully:
Context Clue Math Meaning
'per unit', 'each', 'rate' Slope (m) — rate of change
'initial value', 'starting amount', 'flat fee' y-intercept (b)
'total', 'after x weeks' The equation y = mx + b itself
'when does it equal zero?' Find x-intercept: set y = 0
'when are they equal?' Set two expressions equal; solve system

SECTION 3 — ADVANCED MATH (≈35% | 13–15 Questions)
Advanced Math tests your readiness for college-level mathematics — nonlinear functions, complex
manipulation, and multi-step problem solving. This domain separates 600s from 700s+.
3.1 Quadratic Equations & Expressions
Three forms of a quadratic — each reveals different information:
Form Equation Reveals
Standard Form y = ax<super>2</super> + bx + c y-intercept (c); use for quadratic formula
Vertex Form y = a(x − h)<super>2</super> + k Vertex (h, k); axis of symmetry x = h
Factored Form y = a(x − r■)(x − r■) Roots/zeros (r■ and r■); x-intercepts
Quadratic Formula: x = [−b ± √(b2 − 4ac)] / 2a
Discriminant: D = b2 − 4ac → D > 0: 2 real roots | D = 0: 1 root | D
< 0: no real roots
Solving Quadratics — Four Methods:
1. Factoring: Find two numbers that multiply to ac and add to b → (x+p)(x+q)
2. Square Root: When no x term → x2 = k → x = ±√k
3. Completing the Square: Convert to vertex form
4. Quadratic Formula: Always works — use when other methods are messy
■ Quadratic Shortcuts
• Sum of roots = −b/a
• Product of roots = c/a
• If one root is given and equation is fully factored, plug in to verify
• On Desmos: graph the quadratic and read zeros directly!
3.2 Polynomial Functions
• Degree of polynomial = highest exponent → determines number of possible roots
• Factor Theorem: if f(a) = 0, then (x − a) is a factor
• End behavior: determined by leading coefficient and degree
f(x) = a■x■ + ... + a■x + a■ | Degree n polynomial has at most n
real zeros
3.3 Exponential Functions
Model Equation Use Case
Exponential Growth y = a(1 + r)<super>t</super> Population, compound interest (growth)
Exponential Decay y = a(1 − r)<super>t</super> Depreciation, radioactive decay
Prepared for SAT Candidates — Not for commercial distribution Page 6
DIGITAL SAT MATH — COMPLETE NOTES 2025-26 College Board | May 2026
General Exponential y = ab<super>x</super> a = initial value, b = base (b > 1: growth; 0 < b < 1: decay)
Continuous Growth y = ae<super>rt</super> Natural growth/decay; e ≈ 2.718
■ Common trap: doubling ≠ multiplying by 2 each step — check what 'doubles every 3 years' means!
3.4 Radical & Rational Expressions
2
• Radicals: √(ab) = √a · √b | √(a/b) = √a/√b | (√a) = a
• Rational Exponents: am/n = (■√a)m
• Exponent Rules:
Rule Expression
Product Rule a<super>m</super> · a<super>n</super> = a<super>m+n</super>
Quotient Rule a<super>m</super> / a<super>n</super> = a<super>m−n</super>
Power Rule (a<super>m</super>)<super>n</super> = a<super>mn</super>
Zero Exponent a<super>0</super> = 1 (a ≠ 0)
Negative Exponent a<super>−n</super> = 1/a<super>n</super>
Fractional Exponent a<super>1/n</super> = ■√a
3.5 Functions — Notation, Composition, Inverse
• Function Notation: f(x) means 'plug x into the rule f'
• Domain: all valid x inputs | Range: all possible y outputs
• Composition: (f■g)(x) = f(g(x)) — apply g first, then f
• Inverse: f−1(x) — swap x and y, then solve for y
• Transformation rules:
Transformation Effect
f(x) + k Shift UP k units
f(x) − k Shift DOWN k units
f(x + h) Shift LEFT h units
f(x − h) Shift RIGHT h units
−f(x) Reflect over x-axis
f(−x) Reflect over y-axis
af(x) (a > 1) Vertical stretch
af(x) (0 < a < 1) Vertical compression

SECTION 4 — PROBLEM-SOLVING & DATA ANALYSIS (≈15% | 5–7
Questions)
This domain tests real-world quantitative reasoning — ratios, statistics, probability, and interpreting graphs
and data. A strong domain for test-takers with practical sense.
4.1 Ratios, Rates & Proportions
Proportion: a/b = c/d → Cross-multiply: ad = bc
• Unit rate: divide total by units (cost per item, km per hour)
• Scale factors: multiply or divide all measurements proportionally
• Speed/Distance/Time: d = r × t (Distance = Rate × Time)
4.2 Percentages
Problem Type Formula
% of a number Part = (Percent / 100) × Whole
What % is A of B? % = (A / B) × 100
% Increase % Change = [(New − Old) / Old] × 100
% Decrease % Change = [(Old − New) / Old] × 100
Original before % increase Original = New / (1 + r) where r is decimal rate
Successive % changes Multiply factors: (1 + r■)(1 + r■)...
■ 'Increased by 20% then decreased by 20%' does NOT return to original!
4.3 Statistics & Data Interpretation
Measures of Center:
• Mean (Average): Sum of all values ÷ number of values
• Median: Middle value when data is sorted (average of two middle values if even count)
• Mode: Most frequent value
Measures of Spread:
• Range: Max − Min
• Standard Deviation (SD): Measures spread around the mean
— High SD = data is spread out; Low SD = data is clustered near mean
• Interquartile Range (IQR): Q3 − Q1 (middle 50% of data)
Data Distributions:
Distribution Mean vs. Median Shape
Symmetric / Normal Mean ≈ Median Bell curve; balanced
Right-Skewed (Positive) Mean > Median Tail stretches right; outliers are large
Left-Skewed (Negative) Mean < Median Tail stretches left; outliers are small

DIGITAL SAT MATH — COMPLETE NOTES 2025-26 College Board | May 2026
4.4 Two-Way Tables & Conditional Probability
Two-way tables show frequencies for two categorical variables. Key calculations:
P(A) = (Favorable outcomes) / (Total outcomes)
P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B) [Conditional Probability: P of A given B]
• Read totals carefully (row total, column total, grand total)
• 'Given that' language signals conditional probability
4.5 Scatterplots, Line of Best Fit & Correlation
• Positive correlation: as x increases, y increases
• Negative correlation: as x increases, y decreases
• Line of best fit (regression line): y = mx + b — use slope and intercept in context
• Interpolation: predicting within data range | Extrapolation: predicting outside range (less reliable)
• Outliers: points far from the pattern — may shift mean and regression line
• Residual = Actual value − Predicted value
4.6 Sampling, Surveys & Study Design
Study Type Can Show Cannot Show
Observational Study Association / correlation Causation
Randomized Experiment Causation Generalizes only to similar groups
Survey (random sample) Generalizable conclusions Causation; may have bias if not random
★ Random sampling → generalizable results | Random assignment → causal conclusions

SECTION 7 — TEST STRATEGIES & EXAM TIPS
7.1 General Math Strategy
■ General Strategy
• Read every question fully before calculating — many wrong answers exploit partial reading.
• Work backward from answer choices (back-solve) when algebra feels complicated.
• Plug in numbers: replace variables with simple values (1, 2, 10) to test answer choices.
• Use Desmos for graphing: find zeros, intersections, and vertices visually — huge time saver.
• Eliminate obviously wrong choices first to improve guessing odds — no penalty for wrong answers.
• Mark and skip: if a question takes > 90 seconds, flag it and come back.
• Watch for unit conversions (minutes to hours, cm to meters) — a common trap.
• Check whether the question asks for x or x + 2, sum or difference — read the final ask!
• For SPR (grid-in): answers can be fractions or decimals — do not round unless told to.
7.2 Domain-Specific Tips
Algebra:
• For word problems: define variables clearly before writing the equation
• For 'no solution' / 'infinite solutions' questions: rewrite both sides and compare coefficients
• For inequalities: test a value in your solution to verify
Advanced Math:
• Always check discriminant before solving a quadratic — know what kind of roots to expect
• Vertex form tells you the minimum/maximum directly — use when the question asks for 'least' or
'greatest' value
• For exponential questions: identify initial value (a) and base (b) before writing the model
Data Analysis:
• With skewed data, median > mean (left skew) or mean > median (right skew) — always sketch or note
the shape
• For two-way tables: be clear which total to use (row, column, or grand)
• Scatterplot slope interpretation: 'for each additional x, y changes by m'
Geometry & Trig:
• Draw a diagram for every geometry problem — even a rough sketch helps enormously
• Label all given info on the figure; mark equal sides, right angles, parallel lines
• For circle problems: write out the standard equation form immediately, even if not asked
• Trig: confirm which angle is θ and which sides are 'opposite' and 'adjacent'

SECTION 8 — COMMON MISTAKES & TRAPS TO AVOID
# Mistake Correct Approach
1 −2x > 6 →by
Forgetting to flip inequality sign when multiplying/dividing −3 (flip the sign!)
x <negative
2 Confusing slope with y-intercept in word problems
Slope = rate of change; y-int = starting value
3 Solving for x but the question asks for 2x or x+5Always re-read the final question before writing your answer
4 Using mean instead of median for skewed data Skewed data → median is better measure of center
5 Misreading two-way table totals Identify which total (row, column, grand) the question needs
6 Forgetting to take ± when square-rooting x<super>2</super> = 9 → x = ±3, not just x = 3
7 Confusing 'no solution' with x = 0 No solution means the equation is impossible, not x = 0
8 Not simplifying radicals fully √50 = 5√2, not just √50
9 Mixing up arc length with sector area formulas Arc Length uses perimeter (×2πr); Sector Area uses πr<super>2</super>
10 Assuming correlation means causation in stats Observational studies show association, NOT causation
11 Forgetting that sin(θ) = cos(90°−θ) cos(60°) = sin(30°) = 1/2
12 Expanding instead of substituting on function composition
For f(g(x)): find g(x) first, then substitute into f
13 Misapplying exponent rules: (x+y)<super>2</super> ≠ x<super>2</super>+y<super>2</super>
Always FOIL: (x+y)<super>2</super> = x<super>2</super> + 2xy + y<super>2</super>
14 Treating % decrease then increase as net zero A 20% drop then 20% rise gives less than the original
15 Forgetting units in geometry word problems Always track cm, m, cm<super>2</super>, m<super>3</super> — unit conversions ma
