Problem Sets1

This document is a problem set for a General Chemistry course at Camiguin Polytechnic State College, focusing on geometric and algebraic problems. It includes five problems involving midpoints, triangle ratios, line equations, reflections, and trapezoids, requiring students to show their solutions. The problems emphasize the application of mathematical concepts in geometry and algebra.

PROBLEM SET #1
Chem0 – General Chemistry

Problem Solving (60pts). Show your solutions and box your final answer.

1. The point M(3, -1) is the midpoint of a line segment AB. The clinic line containing the
segment AB is perpendicular to the line L1: 3x - 4y + 7 = 0. If the distance from the origin
(0,0) to point A is exactly √ 10units, find the coordinates of the possible endpoints A and
B.
2. Consider a triangle with vertices P, Q, and R. A line L2 is drawn parallel to the side QR
and intersects side PQ at point A and side PR at point B. If A divides the directed
segment PQ in the ratio 3:1.

 Find the coordinates of A and B.

 Determine the equation of the line L2
3. A line L1 passes through the point (2, 5) and has a positive slope. It intersects another
line L2: x - 3y + 9 = 0 at an acute angle of 45° . Find the equation of line L1 in standard
form (Ax + By + C = 0).
4. A ray of light emanates from the point A(1, 2), strikes a reflective straight wall along the
line L: 2x + y - 6 = 0, and reflects off it. The reflected ray passes through the point
B(5, 6). Find the coordinates of the point of impact P on the wall, utilizing the concept
that the wall is the perpendicular bisector of the segment connecting A to its optical
reflection A'.
5. An isosceles trapezoid ABCD has parallel bases AD and BC

The equation of the line containing base AD is 2x - y + 3 = 0. The coordinates of vertex A

are (-1, 1), and vertex D has a slope of zero relative to the origin (it lies on the x-axis).
The non-parallel leg AB is perpendicular to the line L2: x + 2y - 5 = 0. The length of the
base BC is exactly twice the length of AD. Find the coordinates of vertices B, C, and D.
