SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Summary
This study analyze the contribution of agriculture to the contribution of employment
in Nigeria. Hence, the background of this study provides a brief platform for
understanding agriculture, employment, as well as the various forms of economic
growth. The trend of unemployment in Nigeria has been on the increase for a long
time now despite the economic growth being recorded. Furthermore, this incidence
has led to a lot of other economic vices which are detrimental to the nation in several
other ways;
The researchers formulated five research questions to guide the study. Related
literature was reviewed. Data was collected by using questionnaire from a sample of
one hundred (100) respondents. Data analysis was made using simple frequency and
percentage for the research questions.
5.2 Conclusion
This study looked at the analysis of the contribution of the agricultural sector to
employment generation in Nigeria. The outcome of the study reflected that there are
evidences of improved contribution of agricultural practices in Nigeria to
employment generation. However, given the massiveness of the numbers of the
unemployed in the economy fuelled by rising and uncontrolled population growth,
the Agricultural subsector alone is sufficient to provide jobs for the unemployed
youth in Nigeria.
Having seen that agricultural productivity has a significant impact on economic
growth in Nigeria, this study concludes that policies that will improve the
performance of the agricultural sector, especially in the area of manpower are needed
to foster economic growth in Nigeria. Based on the results and the conclusion drawn
from this study, the Nigerian government should encourage labour force
participation in the agricultural sector by increasing investment in the agricultural
sectors. Since increase labour force participation has a positive feedback effect on
economic growth, the government should enable accessibility to agricultural
machineries at affordable prices and subsidize the costs of accessing and acquiring
the modern agricultural machineries through improved extension and adequate
incentives. This will encourage large scale farming for commercialization purposes
in Nigeria with the use of modern inputs.
5.3 Recommendation
1. The Nigeria government should diversify the economy so as to save the nation from
the ills of mono-economy of overdependence on crude oil
2. Formulation of effective unemployment policy which will absorb the unemployed
citizens especially into informal sectors of the economy.
3. Unemployment can be addressed meaningfully by encouraging local industrial
production. These factories will provide employment opportunities that will absorb
many idle hands and feed the many hungry mouths
4. Invest more in the agricultural sector which as at today is the largest employer of
labour in the economy. Farming has become increasingly unattractive. Efforts should
be made by the government to modernize agriculture so as to make it attractive to the
unemployed able bodied youths.
5. Change in the educational system so that school leavers and graduates alike would
be job creators rather than job seekers.
6. Government should put in considerable effort in boosting economic conditions of the
country. Favorable economic policies should be implemented. This will create
conducive environment for creating job opportunities.
7. Efforts should be made to increase the accessibility and quality of career counseling
and job placement services in order to better help young people as they enter the
workforce.
8. Collaboration among government, corporate sector, and civil society partners is vital
for developing comprehensive and long-term solutions to young unemployment and
promoting political stability
