Chapter Three

Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, including the research design, population, sampling techniques, data collection instruments, validity, and data analysis methods. A descriptive survey design was used, focusing on 417 biology students from the Federal College of Education, Okene, with a sample of 160 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data was collected via a self-questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, with a mean score of 2.5 determining agreement levels.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
This chapter is concerned to explain the research design adopted for the research, the
population of the study, sample and sampling technique used, method used in the
collection of data, validity of the instrument of data collection and the technique for data
analysis used.
3.2 Research Design
The research design explain the procedure and method undertaken by the researcher to
obtain important evidence to clarify and answer the research questions listed in chapter 1.
The study adopted a descriptive survey research design
3.3 Population of the Study

This study will covers some selected students from biology department in Federal

College of Education, Okene, The biology student which includes all the NCE I, II and

III in the biology department, have a total population of 417 students.

3.4 Sample and Sampling Techniques

The sampling technique used for this study is proportionate stratified random sampling

technique.A total of one hundred (160) respondents were selected as sample to ensure

that all the relevant features of the population were adequately represented. The

stratification also took cognizance of the gender, age, and level. Sixty (60) NCE1 biology

students were selected, whereas sixty (60) were selected from NCE II and forty students

(40) students were selected from NCE III respectively.

3.5 Instrument for data collection
A self-questionnaire on the importance of information and communication technology in
teaching and learning of biology in federal college of education, Okene was used for data
collection, the questionnaire comprised of two section (section A and B). Section A
contained the personal data of the respondent such as; gender, age, level, and religion.
While section B contained the research questions and respondents were to respond to the
items on a four (4) point likert scale of; strongly agree (SA), Agree (A), Strongly Disagree
(SD) and Disagree (D)
3.6 Validity of Instruments
The instrument used was validated by the research supervisor’s judgment employing the
content validity type.
3.7 Technique of Data Analysis
The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic such mean statistic was used.
In order to determine the degree of respondent’s agreement/disagreement on each of the
scaling statement in the questionnaire, nominal values were assigned to different scaling
statement as follows:
Strongly Agree ----------------- 4
Agree -------------------------- 3
Disagree ------------------------ 2
Strongly Disagree--------------- 1

2
A cut off was determined by finding the mean of the nominal values assigned to
option of the rating scales, using the formula of simple mean statistic.
x=∑ fx

∑n
Where
x = Arithmetic mean
∑ ¿Summation of values
∑ f =¿ ¿The sum total of the frequency
x = Scores
Scale ranking
4+2+3+1=10
x=¿ 10/4 = 2.5
Hence any of the responses therefore that have mean score of 2.5 and above were regarded
as agree while any value below 2.5 was regarded as disagree.
