Option

The document recommends enhancing a Ph.D. thesis in Education by incorporating advanced methods to improve originality and publication potential. It suggests options such as Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), Mixed Methods, Longitudinal Design, and Multilevel Modeling (HLM) to provide deeper insights and stronger causal evidence. Each method is outlined with its advantages and tools for implementation, emphasizing the need for modern approaches in research design.

For a Ph.D.

thesis, especially in Education, I would recommend adding more advanced methods to

increase originality, rigor, and publication potential.

Current Thesis Method

This thesis uses:

1. Literature Review

2. Conceptual Framework

3. Questionnaire Survey

4. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA)

5. Multiple Regression Analysis

6. Path Interpretation

This was suitable in 2003, but for a modern Ph.D., it is somewhat limited.

Option 1: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)

This is probably the strongest upgrade.

Instead of:

Sport → Self-efficacy → Achievement

tested through separate regressions,

SEM tests the entire model simultaneously.

Example:

Drawing Activities

Student Engagement

Academic Self-Efficacy

Academic Achievement

Advantages:

✅ Direct effects

✅ Indirect effects

✅ Mediation effects

✅ Measurement model
✅ Better publication potential

Tools:

 AMOS

 SmartPLS

 Mplus

 R (lavaan)

For your interests in:

 Drawing-based learning

 Culturally responsive teaching

 Sense of belonging

SEM would be ideal.

Option 2: Mixed Methods

A strong Ph.D. design:

Phase 1

Quantitative survey

 500-1000 students

Analyze with SEM.

Phase 2

Qualitative interviews

Interview:

 20 students

 10 lecturers

Ask:

 Why drawing helps learning?

 How belonging affects motivation?

Then integrate findings.

This gives deeper understanding.

Option 3: Longitudinal Design

The Honours thesis used one-time data collection.

A Ph.D. can track students over time.

Example:

Measure:

 Beginning of semester

 Mid-semester

 End of semester

This allows stronger causal evidence.

Option 4: Multilevel Modeling (HLM)

If data come from several universities.

Example:

Students nested within:

 Universities

 Faculties

 Departments

Structure:

Level 1:
Student Variables

Level 2:
University Variables

Useful for Myanmar higher education research.
