Class 12 Biology - Evolution (Detailed Explanation
Part 1)
Topic 1: What is Evolution?
Evolution is the gradual change in living organisms over a long period of time. Today's organisms
were not always the same. Small changes accumulated over millions of years and produced new
species.
Example
Ancient horses were much smaller. Over time, changes occurred in their body structure and
modern horses evolved.
Why Do Organisms Change?
Environment keeps changing. Temperature, food availability and predators change with time.
Organisms that adjust better survive and reproduce.
Variation
Variation means differences among individuals of the same species. Examples include differences
in height, colour and abilities.
Importance of Variation
Variation is the raw material of evolution. Without variation, evolution cannot occur.
Adaptation
Adaptation is a feature that helps an organism survive in its environment. For example, camels
have long legs and can survive with little water.
Relation Between Variation and Adaptation
Useful variations become adaptations. Adaptations increase survival and help evolution proceed.
Board Exam Definition
Evolution is the gradual change in living organisms over a long period of time resulting in the
formation of new species from pre-existing species.
