REFLECTION NOTES
Division Training on Grade 9 Science Curriculum
May 19–22, 2026 at Columban College
The Division Training on the Grade 9 Science Curriculum held on May 19–
22, 2026 provided me with valuable insights and deeper understanding of
the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum, particularly on the
revised K to 10 Science Curriculum for Grade 9. The training highlighted
the significance of the **Instructional Design Framework (IDF)** as a
structured approach in planning and delivering effective and learner-
centered lessons.
One of the most significant learnings I gained from the training was the
importance of aligning lesson objectives, learning competencies, teaching
strategies, and assessment methods to ensure meaningful and coherent
learning experiences. Through the discussions and workshops, I realized
that the Instructional Design Framework serves as a guide in designing
lessons that are responsive to the learners’ needs, promote active
engagement, and develop higher-order thinking skills.
The session on the **unpacking of competencies** was particularly
beneficial because it allowed us to analyze and break down the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) into more specific and
measurable learning targets. This process helped me better understand
the progression of skills and concepts that learners need to develop. It
also emphasized the importance of identifying prerequisite knowledge and
integrating contextualized examples in lesson delivery.
Furthermore, the collaborative activities during the training enabled me to
exchange ideas and best practices with fellow Science teachers. This
strengthened my confidence in creating lesson exemplars and
instructional materials aligned with the MATATAG principles. I also
appreciated how the training emphasized learner-centered pedagogy,
formative assessment, and the integration of real-life applications in
Science teaching.
As I reflect on this training, I recognize the need to continuously improve
my instructional planning by applying the principles of the Instructional
Design Framework and ensuring that my lessons are competency-based,

relevant, and inclusive. Moving forward, I am committed to utilizing the
knowledge and skills I gained from this training to enhance my teaching
practices and contribute to the holistic development of my learners.
Indeed, this professional development activity has equipped me with
practical strategies and a clearer direction in implementing the revised
Grade 9 Science Curriculum effectively in the classroom.
