Writing Samples for Science Atlantic: Communications and
Special Projects Assistant Internship Application
#1: This writing sample is from an assignment of mine in a university course
about professional communication. It is a part of a business letter draft.
For example, officials will only inspect rental places only after tenants file complaints.
The problem with this is that tenants often fear getting retaliation, rent increases or
eviction if they complain. Students, newcomers, and low-income renters may not
even know their rights to report substandard housing, and some tenants get so
normalized to poor conditions that they don’t report them. Some of the policies, even
if they are detrimental to landlords, are not enough to deter them from neglecting to
ensure quality housing. For example, in the year 2025, a total of 282 landlords were
charged for failing to comply with rental licensing requirements, and were charged
only $400 to $800 in fines (City of Waterloo, 2025). I repeat: only. This number would
hardly be enough to deter landlords from failing to comply with rental licensing
requirements, and these amounts are minor compared to monthly rental income and
costs avoided by delaying repairs.
#2: This writing sample is from the analysis section of my Geography IA, an
academic report of 2.500 words, of mine that I have written during my high
school years in the IB programme.
The correlation data between number of pedestrians and number of customers for a
pharmacy was used to evaluate my first hypothesis, which is that pharmacies in
areas with the highest pedestrian concentration will have the highest number of
customers. The analyzed data of the graph and the Spearman coefficient of 0.33
suggests that despite the theoretical justification of the three neighborhoods, the
hypothesis is proven false. This is explained by the fact that there are other factors
that determine the number of customers in pharmacies, such as the availability of
other services nearby the pharmacies and how much housing there is. Due to the
fact that many of the pharmacies used during this investigation are located on the
main and busy roads of Vancouver that have a variety of other services and that the
neighborhoods within which the pharmacies are located are mostly residential areas,
the availability of other services is the most likely factor that influences how strong
the positive correlation is between pedestrian concentration and number of
customers.
#3: This last writing sample is from a creative writing project that I have
undertaken as a hobby.
Looking back on this moment, I had no idea what compelled me to do what I described.
Maybe it’s the relief that my twin brother is, somehow, after so many near close calls, still
alive.
Maybe it’s the joy of finally being reunited, even if for just a moment, after almost 8 months
of little to no communication.
Maybe it’s the fear that, once we’d have to inevitably part ways, I’d never be able to see him
again, because for the first time in forever, I have to consider the very real possibility that my
twin, my other half, could die. Disappear from my life entirely.
Certainly, I wanted to reassure and comfort my brother from the aftermath of the war, but
perhaps I did it more for my own comfort.
I reached out, took his hand and squeezed it. I could feel the texture of his skin, feel the
calluses, the scars, the blisters. I tried to memorize them all. To have them ingrained deeply
in my psyche, to preserve any possible remnant of him.
