Report on NoSQL Key-Value Stores
Introduction
NoSQL (Not Only SQL) databases are designed to manage large-scale,
unstructured and semi-structured data. They provide flexibility, scalability,
and high availability compared to traditional relational databases.
Key-Value Store Concept
A key-value store is a type of NoSQL database that stores information as
unique keys mapped to values. It works like a distributed dictionary where
operations such as GET, PUT, and DELETE provide fast data access.
Architecture of Key-Value Stores
The architecture includes a Client API layer, hashing layer, replication
manager, storage engine, and distributed nodes/shards. Consistent hashing
distributes keys, while replication improves fault tolerance.
Advantages
• Extremely fast read/write operations
• Easy horizontal scaling
• High availability
• Flexible schema
• Low latency performance
• Simple developer-friendly API
Limitations
• Limited support for complex queries
• No SQL JOIN operations
• Limited secondary indexing
• Eventual consistency in some systems
• Not suitable for highly relational data
Applications
Key-value databases are commonly used for session management, caching,
shopping carts, leaderboards, IoT sensor data, and DNS lookup caching.
Popular Key-Value Databases
Examples include Redis, Amazon DynamoDB, Memcached, Riak KV, and
Apache Cassandra. These systems support high-performance applications
requiring fast access.
Comparison with Relational Databases
Key-value databases provide schema flexibility and faster lookup-based
access, whereas relational databases provide structured schemas, SQL
queries, relationships, and strong ACID transactions.
CAP Theorem
Distributed databases balance Consistency, Availability, and Partition
tolerance. Different NoSQL systems prioritize different CAP properties
depending on design requirements.
Conclusion
Key-value stores are powerful NoSQL solutions for high-speed and scalable
applications. They are not replacements for relational databases but are
complementary technologies for specific use cases.
