The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.
The diagram illustrates the cyclic process of producing ethanol which is a type of biofuel.
Overall, there are three main stages within the operation of producing ethanol, including
harvesting, pre-processing plant materials, then chemically converting them into ethanol and
using the ethanol as fuel for transportation, after which the cycle repeats.
At the beginning of the three-stage process, plants and trees absorb sunlight and carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere. After they grow maturely, they are harvested and sent to a pre-
processing machine which breaks them down into strands of cellulose by crushing.
With the help of chemicals in the processing stage, they turn into sugars and microbes are
added to successfully become ethanol. The final stage involves using ethanol as fuel for
different kinds of transportation like airplanes, trucks, cars and so on. These vehicles burn up
the ethanol, releasing carbon dioxide as waste into the atmosphere. Finally, the trees and
plants, in turn, consume this as their food, and the cycle restarts.
