CAVITY MUTINY SCRIPT

So I guess we are all familiar by the name GOMBURZA? So my question is, what do you know
about gomburza? Who are the3 priest na bumubuo sa GOMBURZA? Any answer is valid guys.

Imagine guys you are being treated unfairly at work, you are losing privileges you’ve had for
years, and then being accused of plotting against your own government.

That is what happened in the Philippines in 1872, a small mutiny that turned into a national crisis
and led to the execution of 3 innocent priest.

Today we are going to discuss the story of the Cavity Mutiny of 1872, the causes, the different
perspectives, and its lasting impact on Philippine Nationalism.

I. Historical Background

1872 is historic year in the Philippines because of 2 major events

1. CV
2. Execution

These events awakened Filipino Nationalism and directly influenced the Philippine Revolution
years later.

Yang dalawang events na yan, it became a milestone in Ph history because they awaked the
national consciousness of Filipinos, and naexposed yung mga injustices of Spanish colonial rule.
That’s why it played a major role in shaping the ideas that eventually led to the Ph Revolution.

REASONS

1. Exposure of Colonial Injustice

One reason why these events awakened Filipino Nationalism was because they revealed
yung injustice ng Spanish colonial government. Because of the way they blamed Filipino
priest without enough evidences or weak evidences. The colonial government by then
exaggerated the mutiny and ginamit nila yon as a justification to arrest and punis many
Filipinos. It showed how the Spanish Government used its power to silence people who
demanded reforms.

And the execution of the GOMBURZA, it further demonstrated this injustice. The 3 priest
were executed in Bagumbayann Field, despite the lack of strong evidence against them.
And madaming Filipino ang naniniwala na they were innocent and they were punish dahil
they supported the rights of Filipino priests. And the executions made many Filipinos
realize the discrimination and abuse under Spanish Rule.
2. Awakening of Filipino National Consciousness
Another Reason why yung dalawang events na yon ay it became a milestone that
awakened the Filipino Nationalism, lalo na sa mga educated class or the Ilustrados. The
execution of Gomburza made many people question the unfairness of Spanish Rule.

The martyrdom of the 3 priest, it made Filipinos to fight for justice and equality. And one of
the most influenced individual eh si Jose Rizal, who later dedicated his novel EL
FILIBUSTERISMO to the 3 priests.
He exposed the abuses of the colonial government, through his writings and helped
awaken a stronger sense of national identity among Filipinos.
3. Influence on Reform and Revolutionary Movement
The 2 events also encourage the rise of Reform Movement. Filipino intellectuals they
began demanding equality before the law, meaning want nilang ang Filipinos and
Spaniards should be treated equally.
They also wanted representation in the Spanish Government, particularly in the Spanish
Cortes. (Legislative assembly or parliament of Spain)
Another demand, secularization of parishes, in simple words Filipino priest should be
allowed to lead churches instead of Spanish friars.

Although the reform movement, initially sought peaceful changes nagpatuloy ang ang
injustice treatment ng Spanish authorities that eventually push the Filipinos toward more
radical actions. So by this, it inspire the revolutionary leaders and organizations that later
participated in the Philippine Revolution. So these events helped shape political
awareness of Filipinos and contributed to the growing movement that eventually fought for
Philippine Independence.
II. SPANISH ACCOUNTS OF THE CAVITE MUTINY
A. Account of Jose Montero y Vidal
The account of Jose Montero y Vidal naexplain niya yung Spanish Perspective of the Cavite
Mutiny in1872. Is it important? Syempre, because it shows how the Spanish colonial
government understood and justified the events that happened, including the execution of
the priests, also known as GOMBURZA.

ACCOUNT OF JOSE MONTERO y VIDAL

Well, according to him yung Cavite Mutiny was not just a simple protest by Filipino soldiers
and workers. In his account, dinescribe niya ito as a large conspiracy against Spanish rule
in Ph. He believed that the mutiny was part of a planned rebellion organized by Filipino
priest, soldiers, and intellectuals who wanted to remove Spanish Authority.

Sa explanation niya, sinabi niya na yung Cavity Mutiny was supposed to be a signal for a
bigger revolution that would spread to other areas of the PH. Clinaimed niya na that
Filipino priests and reformist were influencing people na mag oppose sa Spanish rule.
Dahil sa belief na yon, yung Spanish authorites they suspected that some Filipino priests
were involved in the rebellion.

So yung interpretation nagging reason yon why the Spanish Government arrested and
later executed the GOMBURZA. According to the Spanish perspective presented by
Montero their execution was justified because they were believed to be part of conspiracy.

PRIMARY SOURCE EXCERPT

In the excerpt, he explained in the first that the Abolition of privileges of the workers in
the Cavite arsenal caused anger among them. Dati kasi, the workers and soldiers were
exempted from paying tribute and from forced labor. And nong tinanggal ng Spanish
government yung privileges na yon nagkaroon ng dissatisfaction among the workers,
which he believed started the unrest.

Second, he claimed that liberal and democratic ideas liberal and democratic ideas
influenced Filipinos. During that time, ideas about freedome, equality and independence
were spreading in different parts of the world. And according to him, yung mga ideas na
yon e nareach na yung PH through books, writings, and speeches na nag encouraged sa
ibang Filipino to question Spanish Authority and even think about independence.

Third one, he also accused the native clergy or Filipino Priests of supporting the rebellion.
He believed that these priest were against the Spanish friars and were secretly helping
people who opposed Spanish rule. Dahil don, Spanish authorities later connected the
mutiny to the GOMBURZA.

B. OFFICIAL REPORT OF RAFAEL IZQUIERDO

The official of Rafael de Izquierdo presented the official position of the Spanish colonial
government after ng uprising nong 1872. In his report, Izquierdo explained the mutiny eh
part of a dangerous political conspiracy rather than a simple labor protest.

So according to him, Izquierdo, yung mutiny it happened kasi madaming Filipino ang
nainfluenced ng liberal and revolutionary ideas coming from Europe. During the 19 th
century, yung idea about freedom, democracy, and equality were spreading because of
revolutions in countries like Spain and sa ibang parts of Europe. He believed na yung mga
ideas na yon eh nareach na yung PH through books, newspapers, and educated Filipinos
who studies abroad. Dahil don, he blamed educated Filipinos and reformists, sinasabi niya
na sila ang nagspread ng ideas and nag eencourage sa mga tao to opposed Spanish
Authority.

In simple terms, yung official report of Rafael Izquierdo claimed that the Cavite Mutiny was
caused by liberal ideas, educated Filipinos, and the natic clergy who were allegedly trying
to overthrow Spanish rule.
Per madami pa ding mga historians na inaargue that this explanation was biased and was
used by the Spanish government to justify harsh punishment and strengthen colonial
control.
