What is Expository Text?
Expository text is a type of nonfiction writing that aims to
inform, explain, or describe a topic, providing information
and facts to readers. Its primary purpose is to educate,
clarify, or enlighten readers about a specific subject.
Examples of expository texts include textbooks,
encyclopedias, scientific books and journals, atlases,
directions, guides, biographies, and newspapers.
What are the typical
structures of an
expository text
Cause and Effect
- Ideas, events in time, or facts are
presented as causes of the resulting
effect(s) or facts that happen as a result
of an event.
Compare and Contrast
- Information is presented by detailing
how two or more events, concepts,
theories, or things are alike and/or
different.
Description
-A topic is described by listing
characteristics, features, attributes,
and examples.
Sequence
-Items or events are listed in
numerical or chronological sequence,
either explicitly or implied.
Problem and Solution
-A problem and one or more
solutions to the problem is outlined.
A problem-solution pattern divides information into two
main sections, one that describe a problem and one that
describe a solution. This pattern is typically used in
persuasive writing, where the writer’s general purpose is
to convince the reader to support a certain course of
action.
There are also a few signal words which may
indicate that information in a passage is
ordered in the problem and solution pattern of
organization: propose, solution, answer, issue,
problem, problematic, remedy, prevention, and
fix.
