LIGHT - Light is a form of energy which gives the sensation of sight
Can you see light? *** Plants prepare food with the
help of sunlight during the

During the process plants give
We see things because they reflect light into our

eyes.
Can light travel in vacuum? If
An object that emits light is called a source of light.
yes at what speed?
Light can travel in a
vacuum, therefore
we receive light
from the sun
through the space
A Luminous object produces or emits light of its own while a non-Luminous_
object does not emit light of its own but become visible by the light falling from some
luminous object on them.
Can you give examples of different sources of light?
Natural Source-Sun, fire, electricity in storms, Fireflies, jellyfish
Artificial source-candle, neon lamp
REFLECTION OF LIGHT
When light falls on a shiny
surface such as a mirror, it The property of light to travel
in straight lines is called
returns back in the same
rectilinear propagation of light
medium after striking the
surface . This is called
REFLECTION OF LIGHT or
Bouncing back of light in the
same medium
All objects reflect light.

object.
*** A transparent object will reflect the least amount of light.
A highly polished and smooth surface, such as a plane
mirror reflects maximum part of the light falling on it.
A plane mirror is made by silvering one side of a thin
plane glass plate.
The surface on which silvering is done is called the
silvered/reflecting surface and the other surface is
called polished surface.
Surface-A is the polished surface, it is coated with lead
oxide material to safeguard the silvering and preventing
light to pass through it.
Surface-B is the silvered/reflecting surface.
Reflection of light depends on the reflecting surface:
Smooth, shiny surfaces have a clear reflection known as Regular Reflection.
If the reflecting surface is irregular then, the light rays falling on it get scattered in all
directions and this is known as Irregular Reflection or diffused reflection
.
Classify the following as Regular and Irregular reflection.
Regular Reflection Irregular Reflection
TERMS RELATED TO REFLECTION OF LIGHT
✔ The ray of light which strikes the reflecting surface is called the incident ray.
✔ The ray of light which returns in the same medium after striking the reflecting
surface is called the reflected ray.
✔ The point on the reflecting surface where the incident ray strikes is called the
point of incidence .
✔ The perpendicular line on the reflecting surface at the point of incidence is called
the normal .
✔ The angle that the incident ray makes with the normal is called the angle of
incidence . It is represented by the letter __∟i__
✔ The angle that the reflected ray makes with the normal is called the angle of
reflection. It is represented by the letter ____∟r__ .
LAWS OF REFLECTION
1. The angle of INCIDENCE equals the angle of REFLECTION
2. The incident ray, reflected ray and the normal lie in the same PLANE
ACTIVITY – Draw a ray diagram to verify the laws of reflection. Angle of incidence on
the plane mirror is 400.
Study the ray diagram and answer the questions:
(i) Ray ___AO___ is
the incident ray.
(ii) Ray __BO____ is
the reflected ray.
(iii) Measure of the
incident angle is
___60___ degrees.
(iv) Measure of angle
BON is __30____
If the object placed at A is 6m away from the surface of the degrees.
mirror what is the length of A’M? __6____ metres
What will happen if a ray of light is normally incident on a plane mirror?
It will re trace its own path
Characteristics of an image formed by a plane mirror:
Underline the correct option:-
Upright or Inverted
Same Size or Larger or Smaller
than obect
Real or Virtual
What can you say about the distance of
the object and the image from the mirror?
Object distance and image
distance both are the same
The interchange of left and right sides in the object and image formed by a plane mirror
is called the Lateral inversion / left-right reversal
If I use a blotting paper to dry the ink used to write these letters, the lateral inversion or
left-right reversal will be observed in some letters but not noticeable in others ........
Underline the letters which will clearly show the lateral inversion .Can you explain why
the others don’t ? B,C,D,E,K will show the lateral inversion. Letters
having line of symmetry will not show lateral inversion
Can you make a whole word which looks the same in a mirror? –
IT,MADAM,EYE,RACECAR
Why does the front of an ambulance have letters
written in the form ?
Most drivers can view the ambulance in
their rear view mirror. Such images
appear with lateral inversion and so the
ambulance can be viewed with proper
orientation
Identify the instrument.

Differentiate between the image formed in a plane mirror and that formed in a pin-hole
camera.

Differentiate between a real image and a virtual image.

State the uses of a plane mirror.(Refer the ppt)
►As a dressing mirror
►Plane mirrors are used in making periscopes, kaleidoscope and
solar cooker, mirror is used as reflectors
►The are fixed on inside walls of certain shops ( like jewellery
stores) to make them look bigger
►They are used at blind turns around busy streets to prevent
accidents
►Sometimes as a rear view mirror in front
of the driver in a vehicle
What are the constituent colours of white light? Can you colour and name them?
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
Red ,Green and Blue are called PRIMARY Colours because when all three are
projected together on a white screen at the same point, white light is obtained. We
cannot obtain either red or green or blue light by mixing the light of any two other
colours but light of all other colours can be obtained by mixing the light of any two of the
three colours red, green and blue.
SECONDARY Colours are the colours of light which are obtained by mixing two primary
colours. Cyan, Magenta and Yellow are Secondary Colours.
Lets fill up the colour equations and represent them in the form of a Venn Diagram:
RED + GREEN + BLUE = White
RED + GREEN = Yellow
GREEN + BLUE =Cyan
RED + BLUE =Magenta
How do we see colours on our TV screen?
A monitor or TV screen generates three
colours of light (RBG) and the different
colours we see are due to different
combinations and intensities of these
three primary colours.
A transparent object allows the light of a certain colour to pass through it and
absorbs the light of rest of the colours.
An opaque object, reflects light of some colours and absorbs the light of rest of the
colours. The colour of the object is the colour of light
which it reflects.
A white opaque object reflects the light of all colours while a black opaque
object absorbs the light of all colours and reflects none.
Leaves appear green in white light because they reflect green light
and absorbs the light of all other colours
A rose appears red in white light because it reflects Red light and
absorbs the light of rest of the colours.
The same rose if seen in green light will appear black and if seen in
red light appear bright red
