Desktop
After signing in Windows, we see the display on our monitor screen with different icons on
it. This display of Windows is called the Desktop.
Icons
There are some small graphical symbols on the desktop. Each symbol represents a specific
program, file or folder. These symbols are called Icons.
Taskbar

There is a horizontal bar at the bottom of the desktop. This bar is called the Taskbar. When
we open any program, file or folder, it takes place on the taskbar.

You can add more icons, files or folders to the desktop or you can pin them to the taskbar.
To show more icons on the desktop:
Right click on the desktop. A context menu opens.
Click Personalize. A window opens.
Click Themes from the left side pane. Themes window appears.
Click Desktop icon settings. A window opens. This is Desktop Icon Settings window.
There are five icons. Check the boxes of icons you want to show on the desktop, click
OK.

Title Bar
This bar is at the top of the window. It shows name of the program.
Ribbon Tabs
This is a horizontal bar just below the title bar. It has many Tabs. When we click on any tab in
this Ribbon, options related to that tab appear in this ribbon.
Status Bar
This bar opens in some applications. It informs us about the status of the running program
or window. It is usually at the bottom of an application window.
Scroll Bar
This is a vertical bar on the right of the open application window. Sometimes there is also a
horizontal bar at the bottom just above the status bar.
Window Control Buttons
When you open an application, there are three buttons on the top right side of the Window.
These are:
1. Maximize/Restore Button
2. Minimize Button
3. Close Button

On the taskbar there is a start button, taskbar buttons, system icons, and notification area. It
helps users open and switch between applications easily.
Start Button
The first button from the left on the taskbar is called the Start Button. When we click it, the
Start menu opens. It is used to access programs, settings, printers, etc.
Desktop Button
The desktop button is on the very right of the taskbar. When we click it, all active windows
minimize and the desktop appears.
Taskbar Buttons
There are some icons on the right of the Start button. The icons of Search, Microsoft Edge,
File Explorer etc. are pinned there. You can pin the buttons of your favorite or frequently
used applications there too. You can set the taskbar buttons on the left as well.
Notification Area

notification area displays the date and time. There are icons for volume, network
connections, touch keyboard, Language settings, microphone, new notifications and
Windows security etc.
System Icons
On the very right of the taskbar, there are some system icons. These include the icon of
speaker, network, date location, windows security etc.
