The Study of Organizational Behaviour
Introduction
An organization is generally regarded as group of individuals
contributing their efforts towards common goal. The organization is
established for the purpose of achieving business objectives those
may differ from business to business.
Organizational Behaviour tries to understand human behaviour in the
organization. OB is a part of total management but plays a very
important role in every area of management and has been accepted
by all the people concerned. The mangers now understand that to
make their organization more effective, they have to understand and
predict the human behaviour in the organization.
Concept and Meaning of Organization
An organization, The word is derived from the Greek word organ,
meaning instrument, the organizations refers to a formal social group
that is deliberately created and maintained to achieve some intended
goals. In other words, an organization is a place where a group of
individual with different skills and background are brought together to
perform specific duties, Their tasks are supervised and coordinated by
managers.
Concept and Meaning of Behavior
Behavior is a way of action. It is what a person does. More precisely,
behavior can be defined as:
the observable and measurable activity of human being. It can
include anything like decision making, handling of machine,
communication with the other people, reaction or response to an
order or instruction.
Definitions Of Organizational Behaviour

1-According to Stephen P Robbins - “Organizational behaviour is a field


of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and
structure have on behaviours within the organizations for the purpose of
applying such knowledge towards improving an organizations
effectiveness”.

NB: organizational behavior as "the study of people what people


think, feel and do in and around organization.

2-The study of group interactions inside organizations is known as


organizational behaviour. It examines the behaviours of individuals and
groups inside an organization and how they impact its diverse
operations.

3-According to Raman J Aldag – “Organizational behaviour is a branch


of the social sciences that seeks to build theories that can be applied
to predicting, understanding and controlling behaviour in work
organizations”.

4-By analyzing the above definitions, we can define OB as a
behavioural Science that states about:

➢ Nature of the Organization
➢ Knowledge of human would be useful in improving an
organization’s effectiveness.

5-John W. Newstrom and Keith Davis define the term organizational


behaviour as, “the study and application of knowledge about how
people as individuals and as groups- act within organizational. It to
identify ways in which people can act more effectively.”

The aim is to create an efficient workflow, improve
communication, and promote job satisfaction among staff
members.
Key Elements of Organizational Behavior
External Environment
The external environment is a vital factor that significantly
influences organizational behavior. All organizations operate in
an external environment which makes them subject to certain
external factors.
An organization functions and carries out its activities in a
larger social system and is significantly influenced by its external
environment, which consists of economic, social-cultural, political,
technological, legal, and geographical forces.
